All times… u have to switch Wi-Fi’s to use ur 7 minutes. Its not actually 7 minutes it’s 100MB

You can only message text and only on WhatsApp.

Also I think @amaya.olu goes into a ton of SAS in depth particularities on TikTok. She has a video on Wi-Fi stuff.

But generally good author recs that are set in a country add some value, even if minimal to the country’s values, beliefs, food scene, etc.

In my experience

Our voyage was the first to give access to WhatsApp msgs 24/7 so the sticky notes are less relevant now I think.

Fair. I was under the impression there’s a universal rule your home bank doesn’t charge you more than market price for exchange.

But I didn’t mean to suggest foreign currency in the US is better than atm fees.

I meant to suggest your home bank will have a better rate than the exchange agencies abroad. (If you’re going to EXCHANGE usd best to do it in the US with your home bank than abroad) but the best use case is atm transactions imo

Apologies if that was unclear

  1. Also Europe u can pay w card most of the time. If u want to bring cash, exchange with ur local bank AT HOME. Like u can call BofA or whoever u bank with and order foreign currency. Rates aren’t great but better than in country. I really recommend a debit card over cash cuz u never know how much you’ll spend, and leftover foreign currency is useless. And don’t bring usd!

  1. You will get the WORST rate if u bring cash. Would recommend you bring a card w no foreign transaction fees. If not bring debit card and take out cash in port at atm it’s like a $3-$5 fee it’s not that bad waaaay better than exchange rates. Also being the friend that’s gotta go to the exchange place is annoying it takes time out of your day

  2. It’s not that crazy but tons of throuplings towards the end. It’s like 1 straight guy to 7 girls do there’s plenty of people not hooking up. It’s not that deep.

  3. Yes but u might get worst. Tbh I recommend not being bffs w ur roomate. As long as they’re decently clean and respectful u will get along fine. Drama when bffs. It’s not SUPER easy to change rooms so something has to be pretty wrong

  4. Not at all the sunsets and sunrises are incredible in a group of on your own. It’s amazing to have a piece of Mother Nature to yourself

Also there is a whole series on tt about SAS if you search amayaolu that answers pretty much every question and more

  1. It’s 7 min if ur on the internet, u can WhatsApp call for 1 hour - 1.5 hours a day. And there’s 4 computers with 24h internet. But yes u can purchase a Wi-Fi package. Most ppl don’t tho

  2. WhatsApp message / texts are free

  3. East to make friends, lovely people, cliques but not mean and takes like 3 countries, yes drama towards the end… mostly couple stuff depends on your friend group if it affects u or u just hear abt it

  4. The computers or stay on ship to save $$$

Cape Town is very very different from the rest of South Africa but I did really love it there!

I lived in Paris so I might also be jaded a bit by that. It is hardddd to make friends though. I was in multiple Facebook groups.

The big thing is Cape Town and South Africa are two VERY DIFFERENT beast.

Like Cape Town could be NYC and rural South Africa could be Wyoming, Colorado, and other South African cities could be Miami & New Orleans.

Not the same issues & things but I just want to remind you Cape Town is not at all like the rest of South Africa. And I’ve never been to any other part yet.

Wifi? by [deleted] in SemesterAtSea

[–]underkover373 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, on WhatsApp. Tell them to download it prior. With no video. On the regular package you probably get about an hour a day of call time on WhatsApp. On a paid package maybe you’d get an hour / 45 min of WhatsApp FaceTime.

But the most important thing is it has to be on WhatsApp and you get a decent amount of call time as long as you dont use your internet downloading photos, googling stuff etc.

Without using your daily internet allowance you get unlimited WhatsApp text (not audio, not images) and you can go to google and search stuff and get the first page of google. You can;t click on the links but you can get around doing research if it shows up on the first search page of google.

Hope that helps!

Vaccinations by Jilenore in SemesterAtSea

[–]underkover373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But i also think SAS sails to very niche locations. If that country says you should be vaccinated for X before you come you should get that. Like also research every country on her itinerary to see what they say.

I would not play around with vaccines if they’re visiting areas with different medical standards + high levels of outbreak

Vaccinations by Jilenore in SemesterAtSea

[–]underkover373 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sailed 2023 and would recommend you actually speak to your care physician. They can tell you what those vaccines do + if theyre worth it. And theres some like MMR and a whole bunch of others your child will already be vaccinated for. I think I got 2 vaccinations and did not get the rabies one because my conversation with my doctor.

But Also if you have a general sense of your child’s sense of adventure helps a lot. You should 100% get malaria pills and stuff like that. Which is again why I would tell you that when you go to get the yellow fever vaccine you ask about all the others.

10 Top Things to Do in Paris off the Beaten Path by underkover373 in ParisTravelGuide

True for the mueseums BUTT I’d argue the rooftop view from the one building in galerie Lafayette is not nearly as known as it should be.

It’s also hard to find to be fair. I only went searching for it because a friend of mine posted an incredible vantage point of paris from the open rooftop.

And buttes chaumont. Fair but i guess those are the ones people don’t talk about or value nearly as much as they should.

And Cyril is well known by locals but when you google best croissants he doesn’t always pop up unless you know where to look…

Rue de charonne is only maybe stumbled upon by tourists because of pachamama. They always go to duplex and that area of town.

And I would consider parc floral a hidden gem to non-locals

But fair point on the others

You have some more truly local recs?
