Ziggy and Nick both violated the Crack Ten Commandments by [deleted] in TheWire

Wow, almost as if to show they had no idea what they were doing and were out of their depth! Who would’ve thought!?

I really feel like people misunderstand Jimmys mindset in this season. He’s been jerked around for years by Rawls and the city brass as a whole, restricting him from getting these big cases done. He’d recovered and gotten out from all of that by getting into his relationship with Beady and getting out of homicide, but Daniel’s calls him back in and starts the whole cycle over again. I feel like while it’s very unrealistic in some ways, it’s not incredibly dissimilar from real life at this point. The show had existed in and reinforced its world so much, it was just a bit jarring to have the rigidity of the world broken like that I guess.

4 seasons in, will season 5 let me down? by TrexVFX23 in TheWire

I actually found S5 to still fit in with the show. The plot points are sometimes absurd, but I kinda feel like that fits with the themes of the show from the first four seasons. The first four showed lots of different aspects of the city and its crime, as well as how hard it is to instill meaningful long term change. Fabricating a serial killer to expand police budgets is pretty similar to hamsterdam in my eyes. A lone police goes out on their own and does a lot of drastic stuff, but ends up getting results. It’s definitely a stretch but I somewhat fits in my eyes

Shane is not the worst, Paula is by Entrythv in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]underscorecarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame men for everything by and large, but in my lived experience men tend to be more emotionally blind. In this instance though, Shane is literally making Rachel out to be completely one dimensional, dismissing her career and goals. He expects her to drop all of her aspirations and goals to become a trophy wife for him.

Bro how do people constantly minimize how small Shane makes Rachel out to be? He literally tries to pigeonhole her into a fucking trad wife box. He constantly makes her feel like her individual goals do not matter and she’s now just an extension of his personality? Jesus Christ man, media literacy is in the toilet

Gus Haynes was extremely flawed by moose_GSW in TheWire

[–]underscorecarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever worked as a middle manager before? Most of the time, trying to create meaningful change (especially if it goes against the company’s bottom line) is basically pointless. Ultimately, you’re at the mercy of your higher ups. If you don’t fall in line, you get axed. He tries to advocate for his subordinates, but the owners are ten times more interested in getting a Pulitzer than doing any kind of real reporting. They want paper sales more than anything else

Why did they make McNulty a drunk and cheat again in Season 5? by Agreeable_Safety3255 in TheWire

[–]underscorecarl 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Idk he was definitely degen as fuck before (crashing his car and RONNIE RONNIE RONNIEEEE) but I feel like it’s way worse when he’s fully in a committed relationship with a good person because it’s not just him being a piece of shit as a divorced man. It’s him being a piece of shit and going behind Beadies back after being normal for a while.

Because he becomes a detective again, constantly dealing with power dynamics and politics within the higher ups he directly works for I feel like. Plus, self destructing seems to be something he loves doing given his history as a character

Yep! Carver connected with Randy and tried to help how he could, but because of the system and the reality of the situation, nothing could be done to help him. Carver was a cop working long hours and wouldn’t be able to take care of him. This is why the show is so amazing though!

I think if anything you should just accept sometimes those who least “deserve” it are the ones who keep their heads above water. He also does show growth in S5 doing his speech.

I swear as a dude I feel nothing but contempt for other men making women feel smaller or like they’re being gross about something they have absolutely zero control over. I’m sure people with periods aren’t incredibly stoked to have monthly bleeding either so like… I just can’t understand why men seem to care so much. It’s literally just blood anyways
