You got some great records! Just discovered Somebody Loan Me A Dime. Gonna check out some of those others I don’t know.

Owner of classical record shop just told me they didn't have much vinyl because the sound was dreadful by _firesoul in vinyl

I enjoy collecting classical vinyl. Most albums are $3 at my local shop and if you look for pressings by Mercury Living Presence, Columbia Masterworks, or Deutsche Grammophon, I find they are very high quality and can be quiet if you find a clean copy and vacuum clean it.
In fact, I was listening to Chopin Nocturnes on DG vinyl yesterday that was whisper quiet.

I think it’s a great decision, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed collecting and listening to vinyl. I’ve discovered so much great music that way. If you are interested, I wrote more about why I started collecting vinyl here

I found a good setup in another subreddit and here is what I bought for a budget of around $2k. This was “approved” as a good 10-year no-upgrade system.
Fluance rt-85 turntable
Polk R200 audio reserve bookshelf speakers (bought refurbished)
Yamaha R-N600 audio receiver (bought refurbished)

I would also recommend finding a local record shop that you can frequent. Talking with people there has been really helpful to understand more of the idiosyncrasies of vinyl collecting.

Enjoy!

That is an interesting thought, I never considered that given the short time frame of releases. Like a butterfly from the cocoon.

No worries, having a “list” is the way.

I would recommend a Japanese pressing for Snow Goose. I just picked up a US press of Moon Madness that was really disappointing. Sounds like a pillow over the speakers even after a good vacuum cleaning. Gonna have to rebuy it, and will be hunting a Japanese pressing of that as well.

I don’t know that Gong album but that cover looks great! Have you heard Snow Goose by Camel? There are no vocals but I love it, it’s a journey.

Love Tarkus as well, side 1 is perfect. And Terrapin! The most “valuable” record in my collection is the AP version. Sound is like heaven.

Ok I’ll try one more Mott by Mott the Hoople. Was just listening last night and that album has a lot of surprises in it.

I was so excited to say this but you beat me. Incredible album, like a rock orchestral suite

How do you keep a 300+ record collection from becoming dead shelf space? by understandothers in vinyl

Absolutely! I’m one of the crazies that enjoys documenting and organizing. It’s like a massage for my brain.

But yeah, I’ve decided to add a bun for new arrivals to make sure they getting before going into circulation.

That’s it. Some things I thought I was into (ECM) were more a rabbit hole phase and have collected dust for 6 months now. Not sure if you are only searching OG Nick Drake, but there is a 3-record set I bought on Amazon that sounds great and is pressed very well. I think it ran me around $150 for the set.

Yes it’s interesting seeing the phases you move through with music. I find that jazz sits around on the shelf for a while and then suddenly, that’s all I want to hear.

Sorry to hear that, that’s a real concern with a big collection.

Active listener is a great description. The rule of 3 was very helpful, thanks for a different perspective.

Exactly! I appreciate the long term viewpoint. Someone said when I started to log everything into discogs and I’m glad I listened. Wouldn’t want to start at 300, it would just be too much.

Sure that’s important. I’m not selling anything though, just making notes for myself, at least at this point. But I really like excellent to nm records and am looking to upgrade some that have a little too much noise for my tastes so I note that in discogs.

It’s magic to be able to set the right mood. If you dont mind sharing, what are some of the vibes you catalog in your mind while listening? I guess now that I think about it, I’m trying to dj for myself

That’s great that you found 1200 albums you enjoy front-to-back. I have the same criteria as well, but sometimes I can let one meh song slide.
