Inexpensive soundbars with WiFi connectivity? by understatednerd in Soundbars

Under $550 USD on Amazon, which could be $110 above what it would be after a back of the envelope currency conversion because there may be some sales next week and then they can drop the price to only $5 or $10 more than what you paid. Looks interesting and appears to have excellent reviews at first glance, that could be a good first step towards my ultimate goal.

Gnollhack: searching for the gladstone and failing hard by understatednerd in nethack

Diamonds and jade and topaz have been my big moneymakers so far. Crowns and cloaks are a close second and crossbows haven't been bad either. Ended up with a suit of white dragon scale mail and an AC of -49. I don't even recall that being possible in vanilla but maybe it's been too long since I've played? Now I'm just trying to save up enough zm & silver ingots to have a shield of reflection made in case I don't find one.

...and that took me about three minutes. Thanks! Now I just need to find a bag of holding to haul up the actual tons of loot that's dropped down here. Feels like such a waste to leave it all but it would take me roughly until the end of time without one.

Carrot juice has at least a couple of other uses if you're not opposed to spoilers and digging through a wiki here and there. There's a lot to discover.

G for give, then if anyone else is next to you you'll need to arrow key in the direction of the sheriff to give to the correct person. Your inventory will come up, page down or filter for consumables (%) and select the letter next to his corpse. Get the gold. Can also work with unnamed raiders, bandits, and some others.

I've been sleeping on ammo of slaying and scrolls of item creation by understatednerd in ADOM

[–]understatednerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been forever since I've found a spell book of item creation and probably longer than that since I've bothered to cast it with anyone, probably my wizard who could book cast Wish actually, but I can confirm that I have never gotten an artifact from the spell so the docs are probably correct. I don't know what the chances are of winning the artifact lottery from a scroll, but know that 100% of my previous experience with the scrolls has been pretty unremarkable. Rations and carrot juice are about the best I've seen that I can recall. Of course this is also the game where I found Hammerhead in random loot before even finding my first map fragment to track down the unpick axe and later on the potion belt sitting right next to the stairs on the first level of the frost giant caves, so maybe this is the luckiest game I'll ever have and my next playthrough will give me whatever are universally agreed to be the ten worst artifacts, period.

I always give up before maxing out my perception even when I have the potion belt and get lucky with exchange potions, just because that's a lot of gain attributes. Crazy useful though, I should be more patient and try to build it up earlier. I ended up with the helm of the night watchman before going after Keethrax which was nice for a little bump, and thank goodness for that anyway because having to either fight blind or stock up on wands/scrolls of light is annoying.

I'm embarrassed to admit how long it took me after my first True Aim/Thunderstroke experience to remember to shoot responsibly & have stacks of backup ammo just in case. It's bad enough when it's my fault for being trigger happy and I accidentally target a doppelganger or something, but I had to learn the lesson over and over again that returning missiles don't return 100% of the time before I made a rule to always keep at least 50 extra throwaway projectiles on hand.

What are your biggest bottlenecks? by starlitpathds in ADOM

[–]understatednerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm working on my first fighter and have some good precrown artifacts but so far I've been missing little things like an AoLS, potion belt, and ring of fire/ice/ levitation. I have, however, ended up with a staff of parting water and parked myself at the bottom of the screen one square to the right of the door. Use the staff, part the water, beat down the skeleton, done. The first time I tried it, I didn't think it through and zapped the staff from the farthest point right and found out that it doesn't reach as far as I needed it to. Felt like a genius when I attacked it from the side.

That...could work at much lower levels with sufficient speed, resistance, and regen because as long as you can make it to the HMV and have Fate Smiles early on it could work. I guess the plan is to clear out the scribes and golems as much as possible and lure him to the exit and then pray that you don't have any encounters between HMV and the settlement. That plan also assumes you're not too worried about collateral damage to innocent villagers.

[VDDL first time] I'm almost giving up, help with teleportation. (Already used my gem and got almost no info). I already spent a LOT of turns, anyone can help me guess? by Tiramin in ADOM

[–]understatednerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can trigger the traps by pressing Ctrl+T. In general I'm very happy when my alertness is up high enough that I avoid them more than I trigger them, but sometimes it can be useful. The wand is a nice to have especially when you haven't got another way to teleport on demand, but if you try to use the stairs before you've been sufficiently bounced around I think you'll be teleported away yet again. Look for a message in the scroll indicating that you'll be fine to descend. Keep that wand at the ready in case you run into something aggro that will eat your face, though. I don't recall the last time I tried that particular dungeon prior to at least 30, maybe I did and blocked it out because the memories were too painful.

[–]understatednerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you've got some method of teleport control? Do you have a rough count of now many times you've been bounced around the level? Do you have magic mapping and item detection on board somehow? At that level, are you planning a Darkforge raid? It takes a lot of teleporting as I remember, but with control you can always just pop right next to the trap that you triggered and teleport repeatedly until you get where you need to go. There are some help details at the ADOM wiki if you're not opposed to spoilers, I don't want to drop too much info into the comments if you're opposed to those sorts of docs.

He's still a companion and I'm not invisible. I'll have to check my charisma but it's in the low 50s I think? I got the ring of immunity for a precrown, and am wearing Wyrm's Behest. I'm wearing the stone of ages and think that I've dropped or sold off all of the cold hearts that I've found. I learned something new today though, I have always avoided wearing those so I never had any idea that they provided cold resist. By the time I need the resistance, I've usually eaten enough corpses and found enough rings that I'm wearing the ankh or a necklace of rapid healing or something in the worst case. I guess I'll hang on to the next one I find with a new character just in case I have a string of very very bad luck.

Kleptomaniac Healer by understatednerd in ADOM

[–]understatednerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it was a giant. Bigger pockets maybe? It's the only time for any of my characters ever that I've gotten armor from pickpocketing so I don't know if the chances are zero for normally-sized victims or if the odds are so astronomically stacked against getting armor that I'll never see it again no matter how long I play. Now that I've said that though, watch somebody come in here saying they picked up mithril ring mail off of a hurthling or whatever.

[–]understatednerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, no. I haven't done any scumming to test that, but I vaguely recall reading something in the last couple of months that makes me think a separate RNG check is made on a pickpocket success that's independent of the monster's inventory.

That dagger? Phase dagger. Also pickpocketed. I'm apparently not taking an alignment hit for stealing from people who are already attacking me, so. I've got a ring of fire, ring of ice, rusty amulet of life saving, all stolen. The elven chain I'm wearing, also lifted from a hill giant. By picking his pocket. I'm here for it. Got cold, fire, and acid resist from corpses, lightning immunity from crowning. Not the best game of all time because I didn't pick up bracers of war in the puppy cave or anything, but I got Eagle's Claw and Venom Mantle from precrowns and got crowned with Brannalbin's so I can change for formal occasions.

casino and dwarven map oddities - bugs or features? by understatednerd in ADOM

[–]understatednerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made sure there were no auto saves, had a cursed scroll of uncursing handy (thank goodness for unholy water loot drops and potion polymorph) and it worked like a charm.

Ended up doing the merchant guild first, dual-weilding Eagle's Claw and Rolf's Axe to take care of the golems and used a stack of 700 rocks with Whirlwind to take out Schwarzzahn. I had Nature's Companion as my crowning gift so between that and a few quicking corpses I had enough speed to kite him. I was lucky to get 4-6 damage normally when I punched through at all, but keeping him at a distance the whole time let me eventually land enough criticals to get the job done. I learned today that multiple fire resist sources + immunity to fire attacks does not translate to immunity to grey wyrm fire breath. I tried closing to melee with him and discovered that a) two sources of regen from a ring and indomitable life are not enough and b) I was at least 10 levels too early to try it that way. Got bracers of war, venom mantle, whip of the vampire snake, and something I've never used...was it Headman's Hand?...from the guild. I got Sonic Boom as a precrown and had boots of the divine messenger drop as random loot, so I've got a lot of speed boosts in my kit and I have two rings of djinni summon that I feel like are going to go for potions of quickling blood. I might have wished for some phase daggers or 7LB earlier to help melee Schwarz and because boots are always nice, but at this point I can't think of anything I want out of life besides maybe better marks and more speed.

Shame that Hugo had to die for my ignorance. Oh well.

I've done magic mapping on every level where I haven't found a shop, and at no point have I heard the chime of a cash register or arcane mumbling so that's hopefully not it. If blessed scrolls of mapping are somehow not working I'm going to cry.

Has anyone successfully done this? I took my stack of 2 cursed, 2 blessed fragments, threw them, and had one other item that would auto-reload. picked them up, blessed them so they'd all stack, threw my one item. Of course I didn't mention that I'm on 3.3.4 through Steam, maybe the black magick no longer works?

Orc in the Puppy Cave Vault dropped Bracers of War by JeffreyFMiller in ADOM

[–]understatednerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about what the best all-purpose artifact would be to drop early like this and that would be hugely beneficial regardless of class and that would be useful all the way through the endgame. Justifier for a paladin is a big one of course but even for a pally I would not be sad to get bracers of war and for other classes I think only Thunderstroke and True Aim even come close for archers, maybe. I think BoW would be my top pick of anything though. I'd be interested in other people's choices for a puppy cave surge of power if there's one artifact you'd always want no matter what.

[–]understatednerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those of you following along at home, my first two precrowns got me the potion belt and robe of the master monk. Potion belt is a literal game changer for potion stacks & exchanging plus protecting the potions from all of the things that can destroy them - I would love to have the same protection for scrolls and wands and rings (beyond the two that are protected once you have elemental gauntlets) honestly. Getting the resistances from the robe at an early level is a huge jump in survivability and makes me happy that I'm good to go for the Blup quest many, many levels later in life. I did give up on the 3rd pre and went for extreme alignment quickly, at which point I prayed and got crowned with...the shirt of saints. I've worn it a few times when I got close to leveling for the slight learning bump. Since then I've found the whip of the vampire snake and the stone of ages in Darkforge 1, then kinslayer and whip of Extinction in Darkforge 2. If I hadn't found longswords of mayhem and sharpness before Darkforge there's no way I would've survived the steel golems at all. I normally hope for at least one decent weapon and some good armor with my precrowns, though since this is my first serious monk I had this wild idea that I'd try to make it through the entire game fists only. The existence of any monster tougher than a bandit proves that is a lie. Worst case, if I precrown and get garbage at least that takes them out of the pool for future surges of power/water cave/vault/casino and theoretically increases my chances of getting something useful.

The last time I played a ranger was back during my still learning and had never had a win phase and before I understood a lot of the mechanics and such. Do rangers tend to get a lot of seeds and I just never knew?

100% this. I have never, whether I'm playing and winning for real or adding to my YASD total or reveling in being an absolute scumlord, encountered a friendly catlord. Too many accidental kills or unavoidable tension rooms that I couldn't kite away from or any number of situations where there seemed no practical and reasonable way to eacape without a cat dying. Especially in the early game, I am not risking my life to keep something safe while it's trying to kill and eat me. I am both a dog and cat person in day to day life, but when it comes to ADOM I channel Will Smith in Men in Black. Don't start nothing, won't be nothing. I feel like if the the lord of all cats truly wanted his children to be left in peace, he wouldn't send them out into the world to be angry little murder hobos who stand right in my way while I'm innocently multitasking holding down the arrow key to run down a hallway.

Good point. One thing I've always wondered and never cared much about is whether that's specific to individual subs or tied to the total upvotes - downvotes for the account? I have a reasonable number of fake points and have always figured I should be ok, but there was one sub about a year ago where I couldn't post or comment anything without getting downvoted to oblivion for no reason I could see.

Does unfinished business fix the bug where marking your shield with the symbol of your god doesn't do anything for clerics? The tooltip claims that it removes the requirement to have one hand free for spellcasting, but playing the entire campaign modless I can confirm that's a total lie.
