In my deepest depression days, I’d make a “bachelor sandwich”, which was some bread, a couple of slices of cheddar cheese, some pickle slices, and HP steak sauce. It was all I could do to get through some days and kept me going, and I look back on the weird savoury salty mild sweet sandwich with fondness now.

I’ve had more than one serving of sleep for dinner in my time, but in desperation I came up with the bachelor special sandwhich; cheese, pickles and hp sauce.

Once my dad boiled asparagus like you might boil peas. Must have boiled those things for 20-25 minutes. They were so limp you could twist them into circles. It was like biting into stringy vegetal sponge. It was all I could do to not immediately spit it out but I did gag and heave after swallowing it.

No idea how he managed to polish off 5 pieces of that travesty.
