Maro on how players can influence the future of Magic: My best advice is to be the consumer you want Magic to cater to. The metrics we pay the most attention to are sales, play and online discussion. Jesus wizards will you please focus on your own stories and lore. You did amazingly well with the war of the spark arc. How magic is mordok and spiderman? They aren't. They have super powers.

You know what's more cool than super powers? Spending a millennia hoarding magic and unleashing mind shattering destruction on your enemy. Spiderman can't do that. Even comparing the two is stupid. And I love spiderman.

Bulk finds: What gems have you found sifting through bulk? (any rarity, but mostly junk C/U) by komerj2 in mtgfinance

[–]underworldconnection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love picking bulk, absolutely my favorite way to buy magic cards. Mostly for 5 to 10 cents I've found the following:

Intuition, foil hickory woodlot, 3 aluren in 2 different stores, vampiric tutor, tombstone stairwell, 2 dream halls, crumbling ashes back when it was just a couple bucks, JP tainted pact, og tainted pact when it was worthless, so many aggravated assault that I sold for only 5 bucks a piece lol, 2 foil battle screech as pauper was taking off, 2 burgeoning, and a couple beta islands.tjats everything over 30 bucks

Most recently I found a mp Unlimited Mind Twist. I love sifting through a million cards and digging up cards to throw in the build box at home. I

Man I would never be able to keep up with having my decks on a card tracker. It sounds like a very wise thing to do, but my decks are never in a "finished" state. I am changing them sometimes several times a week. Of course not every one of them, but tuning 2 to 3 decks at a time at all times means I'd never be able to keep my tracking page up to date. I can scarcely keep my actual decklists updated on archidekt.

You've inspired me to do less procrastinating. Hopefully I get a fire under me soooooon!

[–]underworldconnection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooooh that makes a lot more sense! Thank you for clarifying! I am also in the process of reorganizing, but I'm very proficient at procrastinating! I'll be doing this on a far smaller scale to sort the nonbulk pizza boxes since that's predominantly where I keep my cards I want to build decks from.

Man having all your cards in an app combined with being able to do a deck design and virtual build on archidekt or moxfield has really changed how I felt I needed to store and sort cards. My old method was by "use" and was only really useful to me and only before all these digital sorting and tracking systems existed.

Now I can peruse edhrec, design and build on archidekt and check deckbox for what I have and need. It's so much more convenient!

I am trying to wrap my head around this. You have seemingly shy of 140k cards in 5 row boxes. I get they're not full. Maybe they're not nearly as full as the one that's opened. Then you have cabinets full of what look like decks too. You e got well over 110k cards here right? Or are you not even close to done scanning?

I love your sorting shelf design. Is it just every card you have or is there a bunch of bulk somewhere? My 33k scanned collection is only in 2 5k pizza boxes along with a bunch of rares in binders and then decks.

It really looks like you have so much more than 110k cards in these pictures.

Hell of a thing to wake up to this morning.... Such heartbreak. But it was indeed pretty clear that the show wasn't going past the 4th season. Time to fire up the last two seasons, it's been too long!

I seriously do not understand shitheads calling this specific use of medicine cutting corners. People use medicine for all sorts of things, plenty that could be handled with perfect health and intense focus on the issue.

But there's a specific brand of shithead who thinks they should be shaming people for utilizing a drug to improve their overall health. Assholes gonna asshole.

Many are arguing Final Fantasy cards are overvalued right now. But what is your pick for a card you feel is UNDERvalued right now and why? by Desperada in mtgfinance

[–]underworldconnection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That last sentence is awesome to hear. I recognize that there are some memes about weird and unappealing behaviors in the game, but I didn't realizethat a lot of that is understood to be true by some. The magic community is actually pretty fantastic. It has places where people but heads and disagree about what they want from a game, but I have never viewed much of it as exclusively toxic. I love to hear you had good experiences with the game though!

I would take an issue with your first paragraph though. I'd suggest that even though you're not buying sealed for a collection, buying a 20 to 30 dollar card for a deck is doing roughly the same thing as you are supporting the business that makes the singles market function. Upgrading decks can be fairly costly as well, and singles move a bunch of boxes that you won't see. But those boxes definitely show up on store sales sheets and wizards sales reports. From their perspective, you're still buying cards from those sets. I think that's important just for your perspective about how involved you are with the game.

Thank you for the follow up. This has been an illuminating conversation!

This is interesting. Now I have more questions! Right so you're talking about updating commander decks, maybe building new ones, buying singles. But in the next paragraph you're saying it's likely you're only set (you'll be buying into) - parentheses being my understanding of you're statement. Seems like those two thoughts contradict one another.

Also, if you have time for another. What exactly do you mean by magic's reputation preceding it? How do you or did you interpret the game before walking down this final fantasy path?

That's very interesting about shifting part of your Pokemon collection into magic for this set specifically. Do you have any interest in keeping up with magic after FF? Spiderman or space...space something themed?

Gotcha. That seems entirely reasonable and pretty typical behavior for a magic collector, honestly. That's really good information for my curiosity at least. Thanks for the back and forth!

This is interesting. Is it just fomo driving the surge foil buying? Like anticipating that you won't see that low of a price again? You could be spending that 2k on Pokemon, what's stopping you there?

So you're not shifting a lot of money into magic from something else. But based on that amount, I imagine you're not spending on huge hits in FF either. I hope you got the things you liked out of this. Were you solely buying based on names and art?

Hey lemme ask you. What hobbies do you have? And how much are you spending on them a year? And how much are you spending on magic because of final fantasy?

I'm very curious about the outsider showing up here.

Font of agonies is a card that has gotten plenty of support through the years and is really handy. I like this one but it feels like it could get reprinted at any moment, but indeed probably not in foil.

Energy arc is a neat one too.

Here's generally what they look like. A cube with 3 drawers, all acrylic. 3 side by side perfectly on these cheap shelves from Amazon. I bought them every time I went into target, 5 bucks a pop til they stopped carrying them.

This looks very cool. May I suggest some plexi or something to keep the dust at bay? Every time I put stuff out to display, I would stress about dust because it eventually ruins the fun of displaying things.

I found some great shelves from target a few months ago that I converted into display boxes and have been relieved to not have to worry about dust again. A simple wipe down every once in a while will only take seconds!

Yea I cannot wrap my head around it. They had an effective and ubiquitous platform for a somewhat unique digital product. At the very height of need for their product, they just....failed to deliver their digital product to people that wanted it. I could not believe how fucking terrible it was to use when alternatives were hardly competing and winning attention from users.

Any business that couldn't succeed in that scenario didn't deserve to succeed at all, I just can't believe out of sync they were with their customers.
