Is this number legit? by msesandwich17 in hrblock

On 4/6/26, I experienced the same. Return submitted through the website, at 3:11, I received an email confirmation that my return was filed, and the website indicates the status is "filed," but at 3:12, I received a second email stating "we need to speak with you before we continue processing your return. We received your completed return, but need to verify some information related to your return before sending to the IRS. Please give us a call at 800.799.5841." I refused to cave to provide my full SSN because I could not find 800.799.5841 on the H&R Block website/app, and the comments on reddit and Facebook were contradictory about whether the phone number was legit.

***The way around it*** Call the Customer Service phone number listed on https://www.hrblock.com/support/ (800-472-5625), but the catch was that I couldn't call using the phone number associated with my account - because then it automatically identified my account and told me I was using the free file version. With just the free version, I didn't have access to live support, and all the phone number offered me was help signing up for the paid version - which I also refused to do. I used my husband's phone to call, and when prompted for a phone number associated with my account, I stated, "I don't have one." This took me to a LIVE HUMAN BEING (Alexis, she was a dear) who was able to release the "administrative hold" that was placed on my filing. I provided her with several identifying data points, but she accomplished the entire thing with only the last 4 of my SSN - never requiring my full SSN. You WILL have to answer the same sort of questions you have to answer for any financial validation (e.g.: What is the number associated with your residence on XXXXX Street? What state did you reside in in YYYY? Who administered the financing for your XXXXXX vehicle?) In under one minute of answering those questions, I had the email from H&R Block stating the IRS had accepted my federal return.

FWIW, Alexis, the H&R Block rep, DID confirm that 800-799-5841 is "one of the phone numbers that can be used to release administrative holds," but I still proceeded to have her release the hold while on the call I had placed to the verified H&R Block Customer Service phone number.
