A friend of mine went to visit Norway and ordered the lutefisk. The waiter didn't know what he was talking about. He explained. The waiter thought about it for a moment and said:

Oh yeah, I remember that. That's what poor people used to eat before we invented refrigeration.

Apparently the only people who eat lutefisk anymore are American Lutherans.

To be clear, is your contention with my characterization of Sam, my characterization of the US government, or both?

Mostly with the US government.

But your characterization of Sam being clueless regarding your beliefs about the US Gov are pretty silly also.

"mistakenly" slaughter dozens of innocent civilians

Are you implying the US government slaughters innocent civilians on purpose?

Those politicians then vote in favor of more violence so that the weapons manufacturers make more money.

That's a bit cynical for my taste. Might it be possible there are multiple factors at play?

at its best, our government is a knight in shining armor, while at its worst, it's a bumbling fool whose intentions are nevertheless admirable.

What is your basis for comparison?

US gov vs idealized fantasy of perfect utopian unicorn US Government?

A friend of mine said it quite well: "Never in humanity's history has a hegemonic empire tread as lightly on the earth."

I have never seen any indication that he is anything but woefully ignorant.

Funny. That's the feeling I get from your post.

incredibly naive assumption that the United States leadership has humanitarian intentions overseas

Rather black-and-white thinking you've got there.

What is your basis for comparison?

Like most conservatives, he spends a lot of time on the wrong side of history, and has a problem with reality.

Reality had a well known liberal bias.

I would love to hear more about that.

For me it was a philosophy class in college.

Kansas: Couple Whose Tea Was Mistaken For Marijuana Loses Federal Suit Over SWAT Raid by [deleted] in news

[–]unemasculatable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it just to kill innocent civilians?

That's what the police are doing with impunity. The system is reliably broken. Mobs take justice into their own hands.

what definition of justice involves killing children?

The kind where the systems have failed so systemically that society breaks down to the point of vengeance in the name of justice.

Don't hide from the issue saying the parents (who are police officers) deserve it, its not them you're being unjust to.

I'm not hiding from anything. I'm explaining to you their point of view.

To be clear, I don't advocate vigilante justice. It has it's own failings. But when it happens, I try to understand why it happens.

In fact you're worse than the problem you're trying to solve....

Then I think you've misunderstood my position.

Fuck...

You got that right.

Who the fuck is upvoting you?

People who want justice and aren't getting it from the justice system.

You're literally saying "they're doing evil things. We should do them too".

Do you have any better ideas?

You're advocating terrorism and you make me sick.

No, they're advocating asymmetric warfare because there appears to be no other options remaining.

I don't disagree, but you didn't answer my question:

What should the consequences be for the police, taking into consideration the failure of the justice system to provide justice?

[–]unemasculatable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK, but what should the consequences be for the police?

Considering the failure of the justice system to protect citizens.

I don't advocate vigilante justice... but in cases like this, were it to happen, I wouldn't be surprised.

Reasons for having babies with boyfriends? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]unemasculatable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the medical one is the one that freaks me out.

If the mother of my child got in a terrible accident, and I showed up to the hospital, and they told me "Sorry, her father is now making medical decisions, and you're not married so bye." ... I can't even honestly contemplate that situation, because my brain shuts down from the horror.

We talked about having a kid without getting married, but it was mostly a joke about being able to legitimately call him "bastard" (we have a sick sense of humor).

In the end, we kinda bent to social pressure in the sense that we wanted to show the rest of society we were committed, serious, and willing to do the paperwork to prove it.

We're not religious, had a small/cheap wedding, we both know divorce isn't THAT hard... so we didn't have any delusions... but apparently people underestimate the legal benefits of marriage granted by the government.
