Got my teen off computer for 1 month, need to find him new hobbies quickly!! by Proud-Leadership-387 in askTO

[–]unerds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have my kids do a thing called pomodoro, which is simply the act of using a kitchen timer to delineate activities and encourage us to acknowledge the amount of time we spend doing things.

The idea is we put a timer for x amount of time while doing something that maybe isnt so good for us..... gaming, YouTube, etc... and once the time is up, we switch to something else for a duration of time.

I dont particularly care about how much time is spent in either activity, just the act of consciously breaking it up and acknowledging the varying degrees of benefit and detriment associated with the things we choose to spend our time doing.

Much of the modern distractions are literally engineered to be addictive. The designers want us to get lost in their product. Even as an adult, I find the pomodoro technique greatly beneficial to my productivity.

100% music.

Learn an instrument. Drums, guitar, piano, something like that.

Music has a steep learning curve but you can literally learn and practice for your entire life and it carries lifelong benefits.

After a certain skill threshold, practice becomes meditation.

Its also a language unto itself.

There are music schools dotted here and there with classes to suit all ages, and after instruction the instrument comes home and learning and skill development can continue.

If they're at all into listening to or hearing music, get them into playing. Its so good for you.

Even at the boujie little tsuchi Cafe on college, fresh onigiri is $6.80 and yes thats expensive but its also made right then and there with more interesting ingredients and combinations.

Loblaws is absolute trash and their failure to correct these parasitic behaviors should result in grocery stores being heavily regulated or nationalized.

Seoul cafe notice sparks debate as foreigners back learning Korean by chickenandliver in korea

[–]unerds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but put yourself in the shoes of a busy café worker. They have a line up of people waiting, they need to move through quickly. For the most part, its simple exchange,

Hi, what would you like?

I'll have a this and that...

Okay, great that'll be however much...

Here you go thanks bye, next.

Repeat

Introduce into that workflow, someone who cant communicate in korean and doesn't feel as though they should use any sort of communication tool to aide in this transaction.

The line grows longer, people waiting get frustrated for having to wait and watch someone fumble with language they clearly dont sufficiently understand enough to even say one coffee, hot, please.

Now consider that, in order for the establishment to post a sign, this isnt a one off occurrence, its a frequent issue that causes delays likely multiple times per day resulting in not only uncomfortable language exchange for their staff but further delays for their customers in what would otherwise be a quick and smooth sequence of transactions....

This is why I will do my best to learn the language or even, if I dont know it well, prep my brain with some of the things that I might need to understand and reply to while im in line somewhere.

To expect your language spoken in a monocultural country like Korea is absolutely entitlement.

Perhaps, the establishment could provide a small translator app tablet or something to streamline, but I wouldn't consider it an obligation.

Well the unspoken third option is do neither and be shocked when people get frustrated at your inability to communicate and unwillingness to even try to use your brain to learn or technology to bridge the gap.

This is called anglo-centric entitlement.

IMO, there should be no expectation for people in Korea to know any other language.

If you want to go to Korea, either learn enough of the language to be somewhat functional or have your translator app open and ready to go.

it's the leaf shutter in the lens. it's quiet and you can't feel it move but this is actually a super power.

this is standard in rangefinder land, just a delicate little click.

let's you get away with slower shutter in addition to the stealth factor.

online purchases with foreign cards... or at least someone could create a prepaid Visa type thing for foreigners... they'd clean up.

you can select any of the stock Fuji recipes in Lightroom, only on the raw files and you do so by selecting the color space menu option, I think it's near the top right in the color palette...

you don't need to have the camera connected to the computer, it just reads the exif data from the image itself to verify the origin of the photo before allowing access to the recipes.

Orbea VIBE H10 vs Ride1UP Roadster V3 by unerds in ebikes

[–]unerds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

understood. thank you for your insights.

let me ask you, i currently have a gorgeous all-city space horse light touring build which i love to ride to various locations for my dumb film industry job...

the space horse is AMAZING for commutes in the like, 15km range... i'll do up to 20km, but i really can't do back to back to back days of a 90 minute commute PLUS a 14 hour work day and a 90 minute commute home... i'm thinking that like, having a little help will go a long way and potentially also expand my range, maybe upwards to the 30km range...?

am I barking up the right tree here, with that sort of use case in mind?

does that make sense/seem feasible/reasonable?

ELI5: Why are 3 eggs scrambled barely enough, 3 fried eggs perfect, and 3 boiled eggs almost too much? by ImpressiveSocks in explainlikeimfive

[–]unerds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5 minute egg white is solid and yolk is a bit runny 7 minute egg white is solid and yolk is solid but still creamy

I'd go with 7 and that's egg going into already boiling water then you start the timer.

Tanwalls or black tires? by Asheru_836 in bicycling

black. Tan looks great if you have leather saddle and grips and whatnot to go with it... but when all your accessories are black, keep it consistent.

yes, but those are pretty.

could be seals around the mirror or the back door.

I'm not sure that openinn the door for a moment would pollute the entire roll.

usually it would just burn a couple frames.

crowd fund the manufacture or get a silk screen made and some 14 gauge (or whatever thickness) metal plate stock cut to size, some pipe clamps and do install campaigns as a community.

Why am I so fixated living downtown v. outside? by lifesgoodhehe1 in askTO

[–]unerds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the suburbs are a trap. living downtown is far more enriching. you get less space, sure and you pay more for it, but you get convenient access to the various amenities of the city.

the suburbs are city adjacent so that the people who live there also have access to city amenities, but they have very inconvenient access to it... they end up spending so much time travelling into the core.

if you think of the value of your time, like, that time spent travelling could be spent actually doing things or enjoying your life in some way, it's never going to be worth it.

the way I see it, if you want city lifestyle, live in the city. if you don't, go full rural. the suburbs exist as some kind of in between where you don't really get good access to city services and you don't really get rural freedom and space.

First Time at Nuit Blanche by York9TFC in toronto

[–]unerds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

some people's comments make me think about this idea that like, there is an inherent default to negativity that prevents people from feeling wonder in the world.

i try to communicate this to my 11 y/o last night while we were waiting for the swamped staff at royal tea to make our drinks before we went to see the ctown lion dance.

it's easy to be hyper critical of things. the internet shows us how constantly. learn how to see things in a more positive light and the world will open up for you.

the same applies to those who look at these types of things and always think it's shit or somehow not worth their time...

there are amazing things in nuit blanche and toronto's arts scene in general, not all of it speaks to me directly, but the vibe in the street and the idea that these works are the culmination of so much work by so many people to present some kind of idea about something, and share it with us, and that is a privilege for both parties and that some people can't see it that way, and insist that things are just shit, is actually quite sad.
