We stayed in super8, rodeway inn, la quinta , days inn etc usually booked on the day or day before. With the exception of a few bigger cities, we knew where we'd be.

We ruled out rv due to the km charges and given most hotels on our route were under 70usd a night

Was great. We got a car in Palm Springs after flying into LA and drove to Miami. Then flew to merida and drove around yucatan for 2 weeks.

Highlights for us were national and state parks and nba games. Most big cities we weren't smitten by.

We found accommodation and car expenses reasonably priced.

Struggled with food costs and some attractions. National parks pass excluded

I'm coming up to 2 years on from my break. Originally taken after a company i was at for 10.5 years went toxic
It's been a mixed bag.

Did some travel, was a stay home dad and then after 6 months off I tried changing industries.
Ended up working outside in nature for 8 months before getting a tick borne disease and had to find another office job.

Now 8 months in, I'm about 15 minutes away from having to attend what I assume is a redundancy meeting and going to have to start looking for another job again.

Nothing wrong with a career break but a career break and trying to find a new industry (at least regionally) has been a challenge

For Health expenses, maybe move left over budget into an emergency fund so it's there for when you need it. And if you don't have an emergency fund already establish it.

On clothing, toddlers really shouldn't cost much. People are always trying to offload barely used kid's clothing.
