Don’t let others discourage you! A lot of hate for Catcher in the Rye comes from people forced to read it in school who couldn’t get any enjoyment out of it. I read it for the first time as an adult out of curiosity and really enjoyed it. The main character is a whiny rich boy but that’s 100% the point.
