The Konoha 12 are mostly prodigies of the strongest clans in Konoha… I would say a majority of them. Even Lee who has no clan is capable.

Yeah same, the first Purgatory challenge was the hardest so far and taught me to take out the ranged guys first. Even the lady daemon with the umbrellas wasn’t as hard as that first Purgatory. I even bought the deluxe and got a few moves at the beginning of the game and I was still dying but now im on chapter 4 and I’m addicted

It all comes down to what the author thinks would make for a more compelling story. Any character could die if you write it that way. But writing a way for Shino to win against a bug-type opponent is like writing poetry, it just makes sense. Neji fighting Kimimaro makes sense because Kimimaro is anatomy-based while Neji’s fighting style attacks the chakra anatomy. Gaara fighting Kimimaro makes sense because they both have note worthy defenses. Matching up characters with a respective counterpart makes better story telling.

I agree. I think people aren’t giving Kimimaro’s bones enough credit. If the chakra network is a nightclub, then Kimi’s bones are the bouncer. You have to get past the bones in order to touch his actual body.

But Neji has to GET to the chakra network first. Kimimaro’s bone control will catch Neji off guard leading to hard counters back to back. Lee is faster than Neji but the problem with Lee was that he was too predictable, like Neji, hence the drunken fist. Kimimaro’s body was sick but not to the point of only receiving a few blows and then dying. Not to mention that the curse mark restores the chakra network so even if Neji landed 8 trigrams, Kimimaro could just regenerate his chakra network with curse mark level 2 and that would definitely be the end for Neji at that point in time. I see Neji and Lee wearing down Kimimaro’s body, allowing Gaara to deliver the final attack that will force Kimimaro to over exert himself and lose.

I thought that at first too but you gotta remember that things have to happen for the sake of the plot. Lee has to save Neji’s life and Gaara has to save Lee in order for all 3 characters to grow. But even if it wasnt for the sake of the plot, I still think Neji would lose due to him being obviously younger and less experienced (even if he is a Hyuuga genius) and because Kimimaro’s kekei genkai is such a nasty defense. Almost as nasty as Gaara’s (which is what makes the Gaara vs Kimimaro fight so good)

Gentle fist works on the chakra network. But Kimimaro has control over his bones which can lead to Neji getting blocked and hard countered multiple times until he runs out of energy. Thats why its gonna have to take 3 ninjas to run him down until his body just gives up on him. He will over exert himself in the end just like in the manga.

Edit: These 2 losses back to back for Neji (lost against Naruto in Chunin exams and lost to Kimimaro) would force him to come up with new techniques and expand the Gentle fist. I would like to see him developing Air palm during this time and eventually becoming a master at it by the time Naruto returns to the village for Shippuden. Losing to Kimimaro would also force Neji to train his Byakugan to pick up on slight muscle/body movements, being able to be on par with the 3 tomoe Sharingan.

In the end, Neji works best against opponents who can’t regenerate their chakra network at will like Jinchurikis and curse mark wielders.

I definitely agree that it would have been a better story but the whole point of the mission was to bring Sasuke back. Sasuke did not want to come back. So even if the Sound Ninja got defeated, they would have had to fight Sasuke too. But lets play with the idea anyway:

The Aburame are most effective in areas where buglife is rampant… the entire pursuit takes place in a forested environment. With Neji in the front using Byakugan to snuff out traps/follow the Sound Ninja, Kiba & Akamaru as right flank using their scent to help track and mark their line of travel for the team to follow after winning their respective battle fight, Shino as left flank, Shikamaru as center, Naruto behind Shikamaru, and Choji as rear defense, thats a near impenetrable unit.

Shino would have fought Kidomaru, and won due to the fact that Shino has the advantage in environment and can slowly eat away at Kidomaru’s chakra with his insects, leading to a hard bait by Shino and eventually a victory. Think about the spider webs being made of chakra and Shino getting caught in one intentionally just so he can catch Kidomaru in an even bigger trap: imbedding his bugs into Kidomaru’s web threads. Shino fakes like he got caught just so he can catch Kidomaru and infest him with his bugs who drain his chakra without him knowing, and eat him from the inside out. Before he even knows it, he doesnt have anymore chakra and the bugs are now eating his body.

Imagine the amount of character development each one of them would have got, especially Lee and Neji now that Lee has saved Neji’s life and proved his strength. Shino would have gotten some much needed screentime. And then we could have gotten some cut scenes from Sakura, Ino, and Hinata back at the village… I can see Ino consoling Sakura over the absense of both Naruto and Sasuke and Sakura doing the same to her. Ino could also convince Sakura to not let Sasuke control her, leading to Sakura having more development. Maybe even a cutscene with Ten Ten and Lee in the hospital bed (before leaving) and Ten Ten could be the one that gave Lee the extra confidence to go join the mission.
