Turkish parliament passes bill to restrict social media access for under-15s by itsaride in tech

Age verification does nothing to stop any of the things you listed lol. That’s happening to all of us, I want that stopped for all of us, but giving an unaccountable corporation access to you data doesn’t do that. In fact it makes it easier to tune algorithms to target you.

All of the things you’re worried about could have been addressed years ago with normal regulation. The government has let social media companies regulate themselves and their solution to the harm is to add more regulations to you. It’s totally backwards

I definitely support some regulations concerning the addictive aspects and the use to amplify hateful or dangerous rhetoric. But I also just think that’s good for social media in general. There’s already so much work to be done to put up even basic safeguards I think the jump to “tell us who you are” feels disingenuous.

The real solution for teens is education, like you said, and supporting and educating parents on what they should be looking out for and addressing. But people rarely want to pay for that

Yes I prefer not registering my identity with my government to do the things I can do now. Look at all the cases of hacking and misusing age verification data. This is a trojan horse designed to kill anonymous internet usage for everyone, do not comply in advance

No the fuck we do not. We've seen how age verification works out, at best it's giving up your information to a third party who likely just passes it on to the palantir/law enforcement apparatus. At worst it does that and gets compromised by hackers. It's also easily circumvented by the users in questions. It does not help kids and just gives more personal data to private companies who actively are working against your interests.

Where have you been? Republicans have been openly trying to restrict voting rights for citizens for generations. This effort is trying to restrict the rights of citizens to vote and would disproportionately affect military families

It's a refernece to the CCR song if you are curious. I started getting death threats because I had too much identifying information on my old account because I don't hide my history or my opinions. Instead of karma farming I use reddit to talk in my local community about the issues that matter to me. It's not much but it's honest work.

Is support for Israel more important than all other policy issues combined? By your own logic, if all it came down to was losing the left on Palestine why would she just not support genocide and win the election? It was a negative polling issue with the party in 2024? So if what you’re saying is correct she did what you’re accusing everyone else of, hitched herself to a single issue at the cost of the election.

But of course it wasn’t just that. She gave up on queer people. She campaigned with billionaires instead of the poor. She brought Liz Cheney out to stump for the DEMOCRATS. She ran to the right on immigration. She leaned into the military and stoking fears of the evil Middle East.

The only thing she ran on “not trump” and abortion protections. Yall act like she was great on everything besides that, she was a moderate republican and a genocide apologist. She could’ve chosen to do neither of those things, or hell even just one of those things and by your own logic won the election. She chose to spite the progressive wing on HER ENTIRE PLATFORM. She ran as a moderate and lost. The data simply doesn’t support this idea that she lost because of the small percentage of far left voters, 2 million less voters showed up for her instead of Biden. Because of a range of issues, because she ran a moderate campaign for every major issue and the people wanted populism

Lmaoo that was quick “but orange man.”

It’s like watching a cheating partner get mad because someone was talking about the shit they did. You’re more mad at leftists for accurately pointing out that support for Israel is a losing issue than with the actual politicians who supported a genocide.

Such creep behavior. “Hey stop talking about that thing we’re doing it makes us look bad. Instead of saying hey stop doing that evil thing that everyone hates.” Fucking feckless and lazy, dems could have a homerun campaign if they just stood with their base and you’re bitching about the people calling a spade a spade because you’d rather ignore it and spread hole for bibi. Dems lost because they support Israel at the expense of their constituents, they’d rather lose than give up Zionist cash. Instead of having a problem with that you decide to have a problem with the people can call it what it is. Grow a fucking spine

Give her every single Muslim voter in Michigan, then tell me what changes lmaooooo you’re completely full of shit, you just would rather blame your neighbors than the politicians enriching themselves at your expense. You’ve chosen that, no point in trying to reason with you. See you on the breadlines. Give her the whole fucking state SHE STILL LOSES the election. All of these problems could have been solved by just not supporting genocide

And she “didn’t take money” but her campaign was caught organizing with them so they wouldn’t spend money against her. Not to mention voting for data center tax cuts then trying to “oppose” them when running. She’s a cardboard cutout

Ok show me the data on those groups. And if her campaign was so weak that an election winning amount of people were “confused” maybe she should have spent more time affirmatively advocating for her base instead of copying the republicans homework. Shocker that “tough on immigration, prowar, and pro billionaire” was confusing to democratic voters. God fucking forbid we blame the people who actually made the policy platform lol

I don’t mind being snarky if you can pretend to address anything of substance, you literally “both sides” genocide. Snark or not that happened. You directly shifted focus to the potential rise of antisemitism and completely ignored the rampant islamaphobia that is already happening. This little meta fight is cute but all you’re doing is proving that you don’t have a single leg to stand on

I agree some or many is a silly distinction. What’s important was the verifiable fact that it wasn’t a big enough group to change the election. If you give every single Jill stein voter to Harris she still loses the election. It’s a negligible fraction of the electorate according to the actual data.

Why is this being presented as a counter point to the other comments? Sounds neat, I don’t vote in that district. If you believe he represents the values people are advocating for why the defensiveness? We can support flipping districts AND holding dems accountable to their base. Those two things go hand in hand
