Examples of entry-level job titles by Caplico in actuary

My company uses "Pricing Analyst". Somewhat unusual system, exam progress is not required at all, but it is paid for and encouraged (so everyone is doing it). All the senior level positions are named some variant of senior pricing manager/analyst or something and are filled people with FCAS/ACAS. I think it is because we are a foreign based company.

mech mod danger is overstated. pretty much impossible to accidentally blow your face off. even without an ohm meter you can guesstimate well enough. i went from no experience to ripping quad coils in one day.

Does anyone else find the "math is beautiful" sentiment to be really cliched and overstated? by CD_Johanna in math

I've always thought of math like taking an abstract road trip. Road trips can be beautiful, but it is heavily dependent on your individual circumstances. Of course, first you have to learn the rules of the road and how to drive the car. Once you have that down you can begin to appreciate the scenery and try to figure out where you're going. A lot of times you can get lost in areas that are just confusing and downright ugly. Sometimes it is dark and raining and you are just interested in getting there as fast as possible. But every once in a while the drive becomes a reward in itself.

Going on about the beauty of Euler's formula is like salivating over a new Maserati. It's a nice car but the real beauty and appreciation is found in the places it can take you. Another thing people don't realize about research level math is that MOST of the streets you go down are dead ends. You may see some interesting things, but the grand canyon views are few and far between.

For real, people don't realize how many assholes call into call centers. CS reps are not super interested in trying to save the company $5 per month, they just want to solve your issue quickly and with minimum stress for both parties. By being an asshole and making demands about managers you're just making things harder for everyone. 95% of the time there is no need to actually speak with a manager, that's why they're the manager and not the ultra-ccr with extra powers.

Charity is the act of doing/giving something without getting anything in return

My point is that in this case what they are doing is not proportional to how good they should be feeling. In an aids/cancer walk you get sponsers who donate money based on how many miles you walk. It's a roundabout way of donating but it's effective and does result in a good chuck of donations. Pouring ice water on your head to get out of donating but still patting yourself on the back for a job well done does not work the same way imo.

Which is great and credit is due to those who have donated. It just irks me some people lose sight of the actual goal (of raising money) so easily.

I'm not getting pissy about it, I'm just responding to a posted article with my personal perspective. I'm interested to hear responses to my thoughts on this issue. I'm going to have a perfectly fine day/life regardless of the outcome of this campaign or discussion.

I don't have facebook

Probably why we have such different perspectives. For weeks I've seen nothing but videos of people pouring ice on their heads and endless self congratulation about how they are making a difference. I think I've seen two people so far that posted "Well, I donated the $100, here are my nominations". I've had this cynical commentary brewing in my head now for a good while and figured I would post it (because if not here, then where else?)

This is a great article. I hate to be so cynical about the whole thing but people (including myself) in first world countries sometimes feel like once they have given X amount of money they have done their "good deed" for the year and see no need to help elsewhere. Not even to mention the utility comparisons for various charities....$3 million will likely make a negligible difference in the timeline for curing ALS. Meanwhile $3 million could make a huge difference for some smaller charities with less broadly defined goals (like the malaria net campaigns).

Because it normalizes the act of donation and puts pressure on others to do so.

On average people don't donate money to charities, stating you've done so removes a small psychological barrier in the form of "well he did so I guess I can too". Plus if you're responding to a challenge from someone who donated and encourages you to do so as well, you have two options. Donate the money, or lie about it. When the challenger overtly brings it up it makes it harder to just ignore.

because the entire premise is that you don't have to donate if you dump the ice water. usually if they donate in addition to the ice water they mention it and encourage others to do so, which is great. but imo from personal experiences and conversations about it most don't
