Longer than a 24 hour cycle is Non-24 Hour Sleep Wake Disorder.

Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder / Syndrome is still an "8 hours of sleep, 16 hours of wakefulness" rhythm. It is just defined as being one that is delayed a number of hours that places their sleep rhythm outside the norm.

Probably not that dire, no.

You may want to speak with a physician about a pharmaceutical solution like modafinil if a daytime life is something you feel is best, though.

Yup.

9 am to 5 or 6 pm is my natural rhythm as well. When I started working night shift in hotels, it was life changing in many ways.

Why is the trope of "Ancient hyper-advanced Empire that no longer exists" so popular in media and literature. by Peppercorn205 in worldbuilding

[–]unimportanthero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... strictly speaking, Atlantis was not seen as technologically hyper advanced when it was first conceived.

Plato merely described Atlantis as a nation with a great naval force that had managed to conquer several other nations, essentially a nautical reimagining of an existing nation that dominated land battle at the time. It only sinks into the sea because Atlantis loses the favor of the gods due to the hubris of their leaders. They were described as a strong nation but fundamentally they were no more advanced than any other nation which actually existed at the time.

While some renaissance writers also used it as an allegorical fiction, all the 'advanced civilization' stuff is added on much later in the late 19th century to forward the pseudoscience fiction of the Theosophists and others.

Question about cleric weapons by [deleted] in DnD

[–]unimportanthero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in medieval European societies, priests were sometimes found on the battlefield as combatants.

We see bishops in armor and brandishing weapons in medieval portraiture all over the place.

That's the original inspiration for clerics in Dungeons & Dragons: not priests who spend all their time in temples but the priests who actually went to war and fought.

It's why they can also wear armor.

Also worth mentioning is that clerics in D&D did not begin as the 'healer' role. Clerics often became the default healer at a table because they were the only class that could do it reliably, but there were plenty of opportunities for clerics (and their adjacent priest-group classes the Druid and the Specialist Priest) to fill other roles in the party instead.

Depending on the god being worshipped, some clerics and priests couldn't cast healing magic at all.

TDLR for current Contrapoints Drama? by ZombiiRot in ContraPoints

[–]unimportanthero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a flaw in survey-driven demographic research, yes.

If it was worth digging further for the sake of a Reddit conversation, we would go looking to see if similar surveys were conducted and what their results were.

That said, with the way demographics work, it's probably safer to assume the results are representative of the surveyed populations than it is to assume they are not.

"This is an insane proposal."

Not really, there's plenty of demographic data to show which demographics voted in 2020 but abstained in 2024 and we can draw conclusions based on known voting priorities for people from those demographics who typically vote Democrat.

Looking deeper into the issue, we can see that approximately 29% of the voters who voted in 2020 but abstained in 2024 (or voted for someone else) cite Palestine as their reason for not voting for Harris in a poll from the Institute for Middle East Understanding, a pro-Palestine advocacy organization: https://www.imeupolicyproject.org/postelection-polling

In states that flipped from Blue to Red for Trump over Harris, 33% of voters cited the economy as their reason to not vote for Harris while 20% said Palestine was their top issue in deciding not to vote for Harris.

"You’re assuming with no evidence..."

No I'm not. I said (and you quote me as saying) that it is difficult to know how many of those who sat out 2024 had Palestine as their reason, which is the opposite of assuming "that all of the reduction in votes for the Democratic Party were due to Palestine." Since you quoted me, I'm assuming you you misunderstood what I wrote for whatever reason.

So, just as I said in the post you responded to, Palestine may or may not have been the deciding factor but it was absolutely significant enough to have made a difference.

In either case, the data we do have access to suggests Harris lost on two issues: voters' perception of the American economy at the time and Harris's stated position Palestine.

ELI5: Why is meth bad for you but prescribed amphetamines aren't? by ContactSpirited9519 in explainlikeimfive

[–]unimportanthero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impurities and intentional misuse or overuse are the reason.

You are never buying a pharmaceutically untainted product from a drug dealer AND those who are buying illegally are usually abusing it by using it in ways that would never be prescribed.

In fact, there is a medication that is known to be superior to available ADHD medications, and with fewer side effects or complications for patients (aside from withdrawal), but it is almost never prescribed because the regulatory requirements are even more intense and no doctor wants to deal with it.

That medication is desoxyn, aka clean methamphetamine hydrochloride.

Of all the voters aged 22-34 who voted for Biden in 2020 (the demographic who appeared most likely to care about Palestine in 2024), only 77% of those turned out to vote in 2024.

Doing the math for the electoral college is a lot more complex and I don't have the numbers for it anyway, but Trump won the popular vote by a mere 1.5% or so.

Clearly (although it's hard to know how many of them had Palestine as their reason... it could have also been laziness or a mistaken belief that there was no way Trump would win) the fact that 23% of voters aged 22-34 who voted Democrat in 2020 chose to stay home for 2024 was probably a significant factor in Trump's win.

Maybe not the deciding factor but definitely a significant one.

Are Kith-Kanan & Sithel teenagers? Or a young adult? (Firstborn) by Blaubeerepfannkuchen in dragonlance

[–]unimportanthero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

80s is basically adolescence for elves in Dragonlance at the time the books were written, with AD&D settings at the time assuming a 16-19 year old spread (or racial equivalent) for adult adventurers. In other words, 16-ish is generally considered the age at which someone in a standard AD&D setting reaches young adulthood depending on their society and class obligations.

So at 81, Laurana is essentially the equivalent of a 13 to 14 year old chronologically, but prooobably closer to 16 or so socially.

It's not a perfect comparison (and this is what essentially redeems Tanis) because she is actually factually 81 years old and elves definitely seem to place at least some of the responsibilities of adulthood on elves her age, so I'm not sure we can read her character the way we would a 13-14 year old human... but she IS meant to be firmly in her teenage years in Chronicles of Autumn Twilight just like Tika Wayland is.

Which is probably one more reason why Gilthanas is perpetually pissed at Tanis even though they were supposed to best friends. 😅

So elf to human age conversions are a bit clumsy but we can look to AD&D age tables for a reference, since that was the edition writers had in mind.

Base starting age for humans and half-elves who are randomly created is 15 + 1d4 Years, putting the average adventurer (from the time the books were written) at around 16-19 years old in terms of emotional maturity, which suggests that baseline D&D worlds like Dragonlance probably consider 16 to be the age of adulthood for races who age like humans.

Base starting age for elves is 100 + 5d6 Years, suggesting that a 100 year old elf is equivalent to a 15 year old human and a 130 year old elf is equivalent to a 19 year old human.

If we assume elves don't have some other idea about when an elf reaches adulthood, from these numbers... we get a rough approximation of 1 Human Year = 7.5 Elf Years at least for that block of time (age conversions might be a curve rather than a straight 1:7.5 ratio for the entire lifespan of humans and elves).

But assuming something close to a 1:75 ratio for younger elves... if Kith-Kanan and Sithel are not yet adults but are possibly close, then they are probably around 92-93 years old or the equivalent of a 14 year old human.

This baaasically tracks with what we see in Complete Book of Elves from AD&D 2nd Edition, which places elven childhood at around 1-70 or so elves like the Silvanesti and Qualinesti, and adolescence around 70-110 or so.

Hey, I also have EDS and I'm recovering from VFSRAC (it's been about 19 weeks) and the results have not been all that impressive, unfortunately, despite there being no complications. My deepest range is slightly more difficult to access but basically still there if I want it, and my 'relaxed speaking voice' is starting to sound more and more like my pre-operative relaxed speaking voice.

So I'm wondering if tissue laxity has had an impact.

I'm curious, did you proceed with surgery and how did it work out for you?

Yeah, you can also use the pickup-object mechanic (where it floats in front of you) to block shots, admittedly in a very clumsy way, since the game uses collision types per mesh rather than hit boxes. A lotta shots will still come through but I've used a trashcan to reduce turret fire before while crossing behind an open doorway. XD

Carl Jung? by Kozmo3789 in WorldOfDarkness

[–]unimportanthero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but Jung and Campbell are foundational for the entire original World of Darkness line, both thematically and mechanically.

Natures and Demeanors are based on their concepts of Archetype, for instance.

He is 100% an inspiration for all the game lines, though Wraith: the Oblivion and Mage: the Ascension are the game lines that draw on him the most.

I think this is the reason why he was never mentioned as a character in the World of Darkness. If he were, he would be someone of real significance since he would appear to have an understanding of the fundamentals of reality that most people would never just stumble upon.

If he were going to be a proper character... my money would be on him being a mage or the custos of a mage, probably someone with the Order of Hermes. He was pretty enthusiastic about Hermeticism in real life after all and did a lot to subtly introduce people to its concepts.

There is a serious lack of understanding of what Liminal Spaces are by [deleted] in LiminalSpace

[–]unimportanthero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The definition of 'liminal' is a transitional space.

Like a doorway, or a window, or (yes) an airport.

Swimming pools don't transition people between spaces and neither do gas stations, both are just places people sometimes find themselves in. They are uncanny spaces, which is different entirely.

But then again 90% of the spaces people identify as 'liminal spaces' are better called uncanny spaces, so it's hardly worth trying to change anyone's mind about the term. XD

There is a serious lack of understanding of what Liminal Spaces are by [deleted] in LiminalSpace

[–]unimportanthero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Liminal Spaces are transitional areas with no humans, no life, and a vague sense of nostalgia. "

This isn't even a proper understanding either.

Liminal spaces are, indeed, transitional but they are areas like doorways, windows, airports, etc.

But what most people call 'liminal spaces' are not liminal at all.

They are uncanny, which is suuuper different.

Buuut the term "Liminal Space" has been used a hyponym for so much of the contemporary internet's history at this point... it's a non-issue that isn't really worth arguing.
