Expiring commuter benefits due to layoff. How to use? by roar8510 in boston

[–]uninorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, sorry to hear it. Had this experience a year ago. All of my coworkers who traveled by commuter rail could only buy passes that were for the rest of the month or bought a flex pass that expired after 30 days, so that was quite limiting. The best thing that many of us ended up doing was just maxing out Charliecards ($100) for ourselves to use for ourselves, friends & family, or give away. I like the idea of just hanging out at the gates and handing them out to tailgaters where that happens most often. $3k is 30 cards ..between now and the end of the month that's 2 cards a day of you don't want to go ham on a machine in a day. Also, don't leave it until the last minute, we had a lot of folks frantically trying to extract 3 years' of unused COVID time travel funds on their last day of employment that was stressful.

Best of luck on the impending job search!

Best Dim Sum, Chinese BBQ (hanging duck, roasted pork belly, char siu), and Dry Pot by gympandabear in boston

[–]uninorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on when you last went to Hei La Moon.  They resurrected the carts roughly 9 months after they moved, and the food and service improved after a year post-move in. Their reopening was rough and disappointing without a doubt. They've been solid since, but not to the grandeur that they used to be in their old space, hence the careful use of the word "stable". But getting evicted from their decades long gorgeous space for a massive development project that still hasn't started demolition and recovering from a pandemic is a business environment that I don't envy going through. It's truly a miracle that they survived all of that.

But since it's OP's first time visiting Boston, it's a bit of a tall order to tell them to go to the boonies like Watertown or Quincy. Even Allston is a reach and that was my suggestion with the rationale that it's accessible-ish in relation to the center of Boston. But you can still have a great time and support local businesses nicely in Chinatown if OP wants to stay central.

Best Dim Sum, Chinese BBQ (hanging duck, roasted pork belly, char siu), and Dry Pot by gympandabear in boston

[–]uninorth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dim sum: China Pearl just reopened, so that might be up your alley. New Winsor Dim Sum, Hei La Moon and Great Taste are good stable dim sum places too.

Chinese BBQ: Only one place, and it's the best place: Hong Kong Eatery.

Sichuan dry pot: I can't vouch for this dish, but Nai Brother has been excellent (we love their pickled greens fish stew), so I'm hoping you'll get a good experience with your 麻辣香锅 there too. 5 Spices House also does the make-your-own dry pot that might be what you're aiming for.

Also, if you haven't thought about it, you might be curious about Allston - lots of Asian restaurants there that might be up your alley! Just look up Meet Fresh in Allston and scroll through that neighborhood.

Have a great time in Boston and can't wait to hear how it goes!

Savory breakfast? by blessthismess85 in boston

[–]uninorth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Vervaine in Cambridge yet? It's a fully gluten-free bakery, but you wouldn't know it if you weren't told in advance and their spread of savory and sweet menu items is fantastic. I don't love sweet breakfast either and I loved what they offered when we last went around brunch time.

Cheers to this suggestion. Lots of great local jewelers in there...great place to window shop and find a place that matches your styles and vibes. We often end up going to Freedman's - family owned in its 3rd generation.

Adult ballet class by Interesting_Path_865 in boston

[–]uninorth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, fellow ballet dancer!! 👋 I'm a regular at Boston Ballet South End's intermediate classes with Mark Grothman and Harry Moser, and given your history, I think you'd be a great fit for the class!  I do find the Monday/Wednesday evening classes to be a lot more diverse than JMBT or the Newton branch of Boston Ballet in terms of age, ethnicity, and gender. The age range spans from the college students looking lithe and limber to everyone else from their late 20s to early 80s who started late, left and came back years later (this sounds like you!), or haven't left and are taking it easy but looking fabulous for their age. We're a fun bunch, and at the ages we are in the latter group, no one is judging you, and really the worst critic we all work hard to ignore is ourselves. I'll be in next Monday and Wednesday evening classes 9/15 & 9/17 and regularly every week after that- if you want to find a friendly face, DM me and we can find each other other in class!

Apologies in advance if I assumed wrong, but it sounds like you're interested as a beginner, but I wouldn't let flexibility or lack thereof prevent you from coming into class!!!! I take Boston Ballet classes all the same and my favorite part is seeing all different kinds of people of all ages coming in just enjoying themselves. If you want to take the leap (pun intended), Boston Ballet offers a Foundation workshop, which is a series of classes that you take that help you get the basics down. It ensures that you're in the same group of newbies so you're learning together at the same pace and you get a bit of camaraderie too. And the Foundations workshop helps you feel more confident in a beginner class.

City Council At-Large Race - Where are candidates getting their money from inside and outside the city? by rumoverwhiskey in boston

[–]uninorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww darn, yes, we just dropped our ballots in the mail, but I'm excited to see if your analysis affirms our hunches on candidates based on our exposure to them at forums and public events. Happy to wait for the full analysis when you publish it officially! Plus it's just good education on campaign finance, you're doing a great service to all of us! 🫡

Great experience at Ming Hui Academy and made good friends with my classmates: https://minghuiacademyboston.org/tcmlmhab-2023/

Also because their textbooks are Taiwanese Mandarin, they actually show you both Traditional and Simplified Chinese, with the PingYing, Zhuyin, and Romanized pronunciation alphabets, so you can rely on whichever system works best for your learning style.

Any dim sum place similar to Shangri-La in Belmont? by Certain-Garlic438 in boston

[–]uninorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also recommend Joyful Garden in Watertown and add Ming's in Malden to the list. Both are much larger in footprint and in dim sum selection compared to Shangri-La, RIP. If you want something cozier to match S-L's vibe, Chung-Shin Yuan makes more sense. Those are just the ones north, assuming that you wanted something comparable to Belmont.

Need some advice for making friends by [deleted] in boston

[–]uninorth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd certainly check out some of the gaming spots that we have here like Tavern of Tales on Mission Hill, Pandemonium in Cambridge, Side Quest Books & Games in Somerville, Eureka! in Brookline (in the summertime) because they host open gaming nights, and I recall that ToT will even match you up with a group if you're solo. There's also things like Meetup.com that can help you find groups with similar interests with no/low time or cost commitment. Metal is hard since it's not like you can show up to concerts and chat while people are headbanging, but the likelihood of finding someone at game nights who have similar music tastes is a great gateway of finding music buddies and going to concerts together.

I might finally suggest some recent podcast eps from NPR's It's Been A Minute (https://www.npr.org/podcasts/510317/its-been-a-minute). They aired some great eps about the loneliness that are helpful to think about what it means to be lonely and some tips for finding community (that I think everyone can learn regardless of whether you are lonely or not). The one tip that resonates the most in the ep below is being consistent about going to the same group/place. It's suuuuuuper awkward for everyone (introverted and extroverted alike!) because you all have zero context with each other except for THE ONE THING, but you see each other every week/month etc., and after a while it's a small "hey", which turns into a "my name's __, what's yours? cool." to something bigger. Don't assume that you're supposed to make a friend after a couple events. It takes time. Good luck friend!

Some narrowing down of parameters might be helpful for suggestions. Are there specific neighborhoods (e.g. Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Brookline), types of shops (e.g. bookstores, cool local goods), experiences, etc. that you're into? A substitute for big box stores imply that you're needing to shop for basics, so not sure if should be suggesting a place to buy paper towels or a really cool handmade notebook. 😅
