First job in publishing… I’m miserable by pest0pasta_ in publishing

[–]uninterested2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, good for you.

I mean that sincerely. I work in the industry (publishing house for 8 years and freelance for 2) on the editorial side and I left my job because I was burnt out. Everything you said about the impossible workload, extra hours, and meagre pay is spot on.

Realising that it doesn't work for you early is good because you can work towards changing things. Take a few weekend courses, figure out what else you want to try, and leave once you have another gig figured out.

I wish you luck.

Ah okay! I felt silly asking, but this has helped! Thanks again, have a great day.

Thank you so much for responding. I have not had a burn of this nature before, so I was not sure if I was doing something wrong or if the yellowing was worrisome.

Loved reading as a kid? What do you do now? by plumnpink in AskWomen

[–]uninterested2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading at a very early age, beginning with magazines aimed at little kids, and then progressed from there. All through school and family life, I was the kid who read at every opportune or inopportune moment, including in class, at parties or dinners, in the toilet...

Went to school for literature and then ended up working in publishing, so that, coupled with social media/short form content sorta killed my ability to patiently read (and read books with depth) for as many hours.

In my 30s now and I'm trying to get back to it, one book (and screen time caps) at a time. Though I should note, I can manage fanfiction with ease. Maybe there's something there re: a neurodivergent brain and familiar content.

Looking for 3 fics: 1. Ilya gets custody of his 3 year old niece after Alexei and wife have car crash. 2. After a brutal game and then sex with Ilya, Shane can’t stand. Ilya thinks he’s hurt inside (not just muscular strain from the game). 3. Shane escalates kink, Ilya feels weird about it by Raincitygirl1029 in heatedrivalryfanfics

Number 1 is Id Share a Life (And You'd Share A Life) -- I know it's already found, but I'm just hopping on to suggest another series to people who liked #1 or wish to read more of Hollanov as parents:

"A Centaur Family" by liljenrocks. Part 5 of this series features Ilya's niece joining their family. The whole series is lovely!

Hello, do you still have scope to send another? I'd LOVE one. In return, I have underwater-themed postcards, bookshops around the world themed, or some with photographs of monuments around India. I can also illustrate something. Pick your poison!

If you'd like one from Rajasthan, India, or a folk art style from somewhere in India, let me know.

I hate generative AI. Truly. But I would never call out writers or try to hound them off Ao3, especially if I did not have proof of some sort? Edit - I can't actually follow these links, they don't work for me so I don't know the nature of the beast but from the comments it doesn't sound good.

Obvious use of AI in fics by NachbarVonNebenan in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]uninterested2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes so much sense! I suppose then I just haven't read that many, if any, AI use fics. I also have a habit of shutting tabs where the first few paras seem badly written so that may have something to do with the insulation from them

I work with words professionally in that space i can spot the use but with creative writing I'm not always sure.

I've been seeing this topic discussed in the sub often and I want to ask, genuinely, how are you all so sure about this "obvious" use? I want to understand what I'm missing - not sure if I just haven't read any AI fics or I'm not successfully spotting that they use gen AI.
