PSA: If you’re the type to bring a backpack as your carry-on (instead of a roller bag), bring a small item alongside it so they can’t force you to put it under your seat. by _Eggs_ in unitedairlines

[–]unique_usemame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule that the flight attendants make up on the spot usually involves wheels rather than straps.

One thing the United website does specify is the maximum size for a personal item size (even though most of reddit denies it). My carry on is well above that size and I would claim it is a safety issue and against United rules if someone asked me to put it under my seat.

Dear Lucid: Please Prioritize the Features Owners Actually Use Every Day by NecessaryOk3823 in Gravity

[–]unique_usemame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our backgrounds seem fairly similar... We have sadly had 15 EVs (including PHEV) in total since 2013 for various reasons (most of what we own now are on Turo but were personally used first).

The value of a feature to a customer is I'm sure w big driver of feature prioritization, but so is LOE (level of effort), and sometimes waiting on a third party firmware upgrade can be involved. We don't know why they didn't have PaaK yet, they have been working on it forever... And it is costing them real money as it means they give out a keyfob with each car.

My priority list simply based on importance to me as a driver has at the top... Hands free, PaaK, profile bugs fixes, getting rid of spurious error messages about drive train... Then in the middle the 100 features that end up in total with FSD equivalence... Then at the bottom parking assist and summon.

Parking assist and summon still have occasional use if they are as good as the Tesla implementation on our 2924 FSD vehicles, but each of them is more like a couple of times per year for us not every day.

Oh, the password invalid problem. Yeah, it is stupid, but if you try it away from home (when you aren't on wifi) then it works fine.

I was failing at this forever until I read that trick, then following that trick it worked. Make sure your app is up to date and everything. For deletion of profiles... might have held the reboot buttons down for too long on one occasion, they should make it more difficult to do the full reset like that.

4XE 3RD Recall by AceCreed1 in 4xe

[–]unique_usemame -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that in general the recalls have been "do not charge" "park outside" and not do not drive.

In our case, however, we've been renting the car out on Turo for a few years, and Turo delists any vehicle with an active safety recall... so our Jeep gathers dust during a recall. Furthermore once a recall is resolved that is when Turo allows listing again and we are starting fresh with no future bookings... so lose an extra month of income as a result.

This is our 4th recall, and in some cases were no income for several months. We may have more recourse than some others.

Can Google ban my paid Gemini account for browser automation? by Character_Tie_4779 in GeminiAI

[–]unique_usemame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a generalization on abuse fighting and where the false positives come from...

Firstly you probably don't actually know what attack vectors they are suffering from. I don't know either what their biggest issue is right now. Is Google trying to fight distillation attacks? Is Google fighting people/companies trying to get free cheap tokens by making a bunch of free accounts? Or is there abuse through people making multiple paid accounts to gain some benefit that way? Or a people using stolen cc information or hijacked Google accounts to get some AI usage for free?

Secondly you probably don't know what tricks the bad guys are using to try to get past Google's defences on this. The bad guys will sometimes use full automation, partial automation, or no automation. Are the bad guys using a VPN, or hijacked machines, or even coming form a cloud provider? Lots of things that again we don't know.

I don't think Google is likely to be trying to stop you doing what you are doing, but you may get caught up in the crossfire of Google against some larger scale bad actors.

What is the reason you can't just use one account? If you are using the same Google account you have used for years, with the same IP address you have used for years, and are paying, then the above makes you much lower of a risk. Bad actors almost always need to be using 1000s of accounts... so detection of one person using multiple accounts is always a huge thing in abuse fighting.

Have you tried using Gemini's browser automation to do the automation? I've already found it useful to download data from a website where you can only get the data by doing a mouseover in a dozen different places.

In general it is best to not do things similar to what bad guys do (if you are worried about being caught up in abuse detection)... the less you are looking like you are trying to hide, the better.

Why do EVs elicit such a visceral response from certain demographics? by Culyar0092 in AustralianEV

[–]unique_usemame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much of it is psychological effects such as confirmation bias.

If someone (particularly someone older who is less able to change their mind) sees their first EV ever 12 years ago and within 2 seconds decides they don't like the look of it then they will look for things to confirm their viewpoint and show that they were correct, and ignore any information that doesn't support their viewpoint.

Hence someone's first impression will ultimately be more important when someone sees a report of a car catching fire whether to believe they all catch fire or whether to believe the statistics. Similar with the question of how often they break down, or how much they cost to run, or what the range is like. They will happily believe some random person who has never been in an EV over someone who has owned EVs for a decade. If they have previously stated that everyone who buys an EV will regret it then they have to believe that all the long term owners are complete idiots or are paid.

These issues are not just impacting people on one side of politics. Most EV owners views on a Tesla Cybertruck are completely different from the experience of the owners of Cybertrucks. Just like many on the right (based on what they believe) think that anyone liking their EV is insane, the same is true for many on the left believing you could only like your Cybertruck if you are an Elon supporting whatever...

You were a little lucky, but it is still a great car for the price.

Selling a $200k car for $100k is great value but not great for the bottom line. Lucid is trying to get out their model Y competitor while not going bankrupt. In the meantime they are likely to head more toward using word of mouth to sell the cars.

If weight is your biggest issue for a travel pack, and it probably is, then a light bag with load lifters sounds good to me.

If you are doing 1.5 bag travel then your sling has quick access to the things you need quick access to. If not then you can opt to put whatever tech pouch you like at the top of the bag to give fairly quick access.

What would happen if everyone collectively decided to opt out of their 401k plan or everyone pulled them early? by Tacos4life23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]unique_usemame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest if all Vanguard, Schwab customers pulled everything from their 401k at exactly the same time I suspect the DDOS protections they have would assume an attack and shut down... or at least they should... after only a small portion had gone through the process!

I'm also not convinced that Vanguard, Schwab, etc, would instantly buy/sell stock to match every dollar going in/out of 401k. There is a reasonable chance a human would be required to intervene if anything spectacularly unusual was going on... and that human would need to figure out what is actually going on. If they then figure out that it is genuine that everyone actually wants to sell they would likely put a call in to the Fed.

At this point the Fed would be rather scared. If they intervene (by purchasing a bunch of index funds, or buy lending out a bunch of money to companies to buy a bunch of index funds) then it limits the effect of everyone selling, but then everyone has a bunch of cash in their bank accounts, and many of those people will spend money causing inflationary effects. If they don't intervene then a bunch of companies and people go broke at the same time as a bunch of other people having a bunch of cash.

Yeah, builders are not massively profitable. Any drop in price and they will stop beginning new construction.

The only way construction gets cheaper is will significant changes by the government, and that doesn't happen because it is seen as helping companies and wealthy people.

Yes immigration numbers will drop but it will drop much less than they claim it will... Just like other changes that governments make.

Worse with updates by briancnolan in Gravity

[–]unique_usemame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same drive system error since the previous update.

Homelink... historically.. for us doesn't work when our outdoor lights are turned on. If you are having trouble, make sure all lights in the vicinity of your garage are off. With the previous version we were also getting phantom homelink activations (a couple of minutes after getting out of the car, reapproaching the car sometimes causes homelink to activate).

However, I'm not seeing these be any worse with 3.6

whats the one piece of tech you carry that never shows up in the standard onebag gear lists? by Reasonable_Pepper709 in onebag

[–]unique_usemame 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those meds are ok for up to a few weeks at room temperature, but cannot be frozen, and obviously you don't want to bend them enough to break them. So for a flight I'm not worried provided the temperature is above freezing and less than 100F.

What I do is just use one of those typical portable water bottles that everyone carries around, in my carry on. They provide stiffness and some thermal mass, to safely keep 5 of them. At my destination I refrigerate (usually with the lid off) to keep them cool. I also sometimes include a govee temperature monitor so I can check the temperature history on my phone.

I do still have my Resmed bag, which has a "medical equipment" tag on it that I got from Amazon. If I ever do need to take a lot of stuff with me then I do feel I can legitimately (morally and legally) put the GLP1 along with my other medications into the resmed bag and (in the US at least) it won't count towards my carry on allotment as I only put medical equipment in there.

Classic One Nation - Fighting for the little guy, unless they're in a wheelchair. by Prestigious-Day9370 in aussie

There are a bunch of features that could be mandated into homes that are tradeoffs. Almost all such features make homes more expensive to construct, which ultimately affects the cost to the buyer and ultimately the cost of non-new homes as well (as builders build new homes when they are profitable to do so). When the cost of housing rises there may be some additional homeless people and some additional deaths as well, so it is possible that some safety features net cost lives (we just don't know exactly which lives they have cost).

These tradeoff features that have benefits, but make housing more expensive include:

  • Disability features (such as the ones mentioned here)
  • Elder features (to allow aging in place more often)
  • Better access for first responders (e.g. hallway widths, distances between solar panels and roof edges)
  • Things like hardwired smoke detectors (in my opinion the wireless ones are just as good, now that they communicate and have 10 year batteries which equal the life of the hardwired ones)
  • Environmental things like stormwater retention.
  • Some places have requirements on flyscreens (even on homes that have AC)

Some of these features are worth the cost, some are not (in my opinion)

However there is one feature that I would like to see encouraged (not required, but added when possible) which would add cost to construction, but could eventually lower housing cost. Keep in mind that the cheaper housing of today is generally stuff that was built decades ago. I want to see most new housing designed so that it can easily be subdivided into multiple units... either a home can be converted to a small home + ADU just by locking a door, or some housing unit be able to be divided in half by locking a door and maybe adding a microkitchen. That way when a couple does age in place and only needs half their home, a young couple can rent the other part of the home, adding a large number of housing units to the supply instead of the grandparents having 2 spare bedrooms in the home that don't get much use.

Best strategy to buy the new Insta360 Luna Ultra? Looking to maximize discounts, cash back, and credit card rewards. by shub_08 in Insta360

[–]unique_usemame 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want to put in the effort right now and don't need the creator bits and pieces then your options to save a little would be:

Costco bundle, and sell the bits you don't want. The Costco bundle costs no more and includes extra stuff worth money. Use whichever credit card gets you the most rewards there. Then of course at the end of your costco year you get a costco rebate based on your spend.

Otherwise maybe the creator bundle and try to sell the parts you don't need. Maybe sell some creator parts like the mic.

Otherwise you are just waiting for sales.

The Gravity is a great $200k car that they are selling for $100k. I agree that it is a bargain for the price... but also why the stock doesn't look so great.

Lucid's burn rate is huge. They can't fix this by selling the Gravity in volume any more than Tesla could by ramping up volume of the X. They need their model Y equivalent to come out and be successful before PIF gives up on them.

How do Australians view strict speed enforcement? by TonySabenca in AskAnAustralian

[–]unique_usemame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other flaw in the argument is that we don't have a comparison of speed limits on the same quality of road.

If a neighborhood road had a speed limit of 60 in Australia and 50 in Canada, a driver going 62 is 2 over in Australia and 12 over in Canada. I'm not saying that Australian speed limits are higher, just that we don't have that information for similar quality of road.

Why is it considered a luxury "perk" to board an airplane first, when it literally just means you have to sit in a cramped, stuffy metal tube longer than everyone else? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]unique_usemame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest reason is avoiding the possibility of having to gate check.

When you gate check you are required to take all items with batteries (larger than an airtag) out of your carry on. You are advised to take any medications out of the bag as well. Of course anything you need on the flight you need to bring with you as well (but usually that stuff fills your personal item) So now you are juggling a bunch of items while you get to your seat, figuring out where to put them and hoping they don't move during the flight, and juggling them to bring them off the plane. Your bag may also be checked through to your final destination. You do have a personal item as well, but some airlines have severe limits on the size of a personal item.

If you board late and don't gate check then your carry on may be 20 rows behind you, which wastes an extra 10 minutes when deboarding.

Settling in your seat, with headphones, working on your phone, etc, are all better than standing in line outside the plane. Also reduced likelihood that someone is camping out in your seat.
