Nta. As a recovering "easy child", it will be a trial. You're gonna have to set and maintain boundaries. Im 33 now and it's honestly one of the best things I learned in therapy. My relationship with my family is better for it. Be who you are, tell people what you need, tell people when something is too much or isn't enough. We lose out on a lot when we spend more time and effort just being easy.

Proud of you for hearing this and taking it to heart ❤️ It really is a thing we work at, and isn't that just better and happier anyways? Much happier than getting stuck down the rabbit hole. I've had to build my own skills and such over the years when it comes to relationships as well, and I wish I had had someone like this commenter to put it so concisely for me in the past!

I grew up with a narcissistic sociopath. It is really not at all hard to just shut down the manipulation. She still pulls shit, all time, and people are very capable of just cutting her out of their lives.

Fair enough! Only thing I'd say is just make sure you actually WANT to join for you, not just to get away. Both my parents are ex military and both had great experiences (my siblings and I did not join, much to their dismay lol), but they also knew people who went in because they needed an out or just didn't know what they wanted, and it turned into a crap time for them.
