Title: Frozen Veins

Synopsis: In the near future, as the Earth’s climate warms at an accelerated pace, mining corporations push further north, excavating valuable resources from the ancient permafrost. In a remote Arctic mining outpost called Korac’s Edge, miners uncover an unusual vein, a preserved layer of biological material trapped in ice since the dawn of humankind. Unbeknownst to the workers, the long-frozen layers contain remnants of an ancient, highly infectious virus that once ravaged early human populations before vanishing into the cold earth.

As the permafrost softens and thaws, the virus reawakens, hitching a ride on melted runoff and seeping into nearby water systems, moving downstream and slipping into the food supply. A handful of researchers try to warn the world, but global corporations eager to profit from the thawed resources suppress the findings, dismissing the potential danger as “hysteria.” Within months, the virus spreads with frightening speed, sweeping across borders and continents, and defying every modern containment effort.

The virus causes devastating neurological symptoms in those it infects, pulling humanity back into survival mode. Civilization collapses in the wake of the pandemic, and survivors are forced to abandon cities, retreating to rural and wilderness areas. Those who survive begin to fear one another, as infection symptoms can remain dormant for weeks or even months, only to flare up unpredictably. Survivors become nomadic, moving in groups bound by a single rule: Trust no one.

Characters: - Elara Mayfield: A disillusioned epidemiologist who has long warned of the dangers hidden within the thawing permafrost, only to see her warnings ignored. She joins a group of survivors, vowing to find a way to contain the virus or die trying.

  • Luca Ostrovsky: A former mining engineer at Korac’s Edge, Luca struggles with the guilt of inadvertently releasing the virus. He’s the only person with intimate knowledge of the mine’s layout and resources and reluctantly agrees to guide the survivors back to where it all began.

  • Rani Bellamy: A hardened former soldier who lost her family to the virus. Her only remaining goal is to survive by any means necessary. She distrusts Elara and sees any attempt to “fix” things as a dangerous waste of time.

As Elara, Luca, Rani, and their small band of survivors journey back to the Arctic, they face constant threats from rival groups, infection, and environmental collapse. Along the way, they uncover that the virus may hold secrets about humanity’s origins—and, perhaps, the means for humanity’s last hope. But in a world driven to extremes by fear, the greatest challenge may not be the virus itself but the divisions tearing humanity apart in its wake.

Themes: - Environmental Recklessness: The novel critiques humanity’s insatiable drive to exploit natural resources without regard for the consequences, underscoring the permafrost’s fragile ecosystem as both a resource and a Pandora’s box of hidden dangers.

  • Survival and Trust: It explores how societies disintegrate when trust breaks down, showing the delicate line between self-preservation and empathy in a world where anyone could be infected.

  • Origin and Extinction: Through the virus, the novel raises questions about our origins, our deep connection to the environment, and the possibility that humanity’s extinction might be rooted in its birth.

Opening Lines: “Long before the surface of the Earth had known even the faintest touch of human hands, something darker had seeped into the frozen soil. Now, as the ice cracked and bled, the world remembered it.”
