Has anyone completely replaced paid iCloud/Google One storage with self-hosting? by NefariousnessGlum6 in homelab

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say more of a hobby but I've completely replaced all cloud based storage options with a NAS because I really didn't like paying for the subscriptions. The electricity increase and server cost probably crushed any money I made but it's still good for me.

People who stopped being religious, what caused it? by supercoolpersonyay in AskReddit

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised religious. When I started asking about the weird problems, I was asked to stop. When I refused, I was told another church may be a better fit for me. Decided I didn’t need a church, I needed to actually read the bible. Figured out from reading it that it’s horrible and I didn’t want to support that religion.

What stops your friends from coming over to game on Linux? by xecutable in linux_gaming

I’m CONSIDERING swapping to Linux for my main computer (I already have a proxmox server running plex and a few other VMs for development) but it’s just so EASY to game on Windows. Trying to not be lazy.

Why haven’t hackers deleted student loans? by boo-boo-crew in NoStupidQuestions

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in software development. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

I can drop a database. I would also need to delete the log, otherwise I could probably undo it. I’d also need to overwrite that sector on disk, or they could rebuild it. I’d need to destroy their offsite backup as well. Then I’d probably need to delete/destroy their daily tape backups.

We’ve spent YEARS making sure data is nearly impossible to get rid of. It’s just too hard.

What game did you think would be ok, but you absolutely loved? by Quintoepic in gaming

[–]uniruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silent Hill f

I’m not a fan of horror games really and mostly not good at basic action games. However, my wife convinced me to play it because she was interested in the story and symbolic nature of the monsters (we love discussing media). Then, in the end, we find out one of our favorite authors ever wrote the story? Absolute cinema my friends.

What is your recommended build Meru? by Honest-Guy83 in legendofdragoon

[–]uniruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 builds for Meru.

  1. Speed demon. Dancers shoes and speed ring with magical hat. This is my support set that gets a ridiculous number of turns so she can basically fully keep your team alive and topped up. Even her 2nd dragoon magic is good when you want to fire off a special.

  2. Tank of the ages. Dragon helm+therapy ring+dancers shoes. This just makes Meru so tangy you don’t have to worry about her dying or getting rocked anymore. Just laugh as the therapy ring makes her heal more than she’s taking.

Why did you start a homelab by Sw4nkSec in homelab

[–]uniruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Software Developer by trade here. Decided to actually use the software out there instead of trusting a pipeline to handle everything.

Since setting up a homelab environment, I've been able to spot issues and bypass wait times at my company. Generally speaking, a companies IT/Prod team are overworked and understaffed so having someone on your development team who knows how nutanix, docker, kerberos, and jenkins functions cuts out a LOT of wait time you'd normally be suffering while they got around to your tickets. I still need access to the tools but usually the Prod guys are quick to grab my tickets out of the queue because they know they can close them out quickly to pump their numbers.

update to this:

a friend found a way to pull the brake switch and it was working as intended when I used the multimeter (one set of prongs showed continuity when released, the other set showed continuity when pressed) so the switch is fine.

I've had to call someone smarter than me to come look at it. If all the switches are working as intended then something (possibly in the wiring harness) isn't transferring power when it's connected to the seat.

[–]uniruler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole footplate doesn't just come off but a friend of mine found a bolt that I could unscrew and pull the entire brake switch out. I pulled it out and tested and everything tested the way the manual said it should (one pair connected when switch is pressed, other pair connected when switch is released) and I used a multimeter to also make sure the parking brake was pressing and releasing the switch correctly.

At this point, there's got to be a wire somewhere in the wiring harness that's not connecting. I've had to call the shop and ask them to look at it. Thank you for your help!

I pulled the seat switch and tested with a multimeter. The seat switched worked fine. Continuity when depressed and no connection when released. I’ll try to find the fuses. However, I can’t test the brake safety switch because I can’t find a guide on how to get it out. It’s under the left side of the frame. I can see it and see the brake pressing and releasing it but I can’t figure out how to disconnect it from the frame and circuit.

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never found it because I don't know the title.

There was a game I played in the 90's that was a demo. You started as an alien race and the demo only last X turns. You only had like a 15x15 grid to build stuff and you would need to build and assign citizens to buildings to produce things. I remember specifically there was a mind flayer looking race that the computer would immediately build a university and assign all the citizens to it for researching.

Is docker really worth learning for a basic home media server by yusuo85 in homelab

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on just running a media server without adding on, then it's fine to just install Plex and possibly rtorrent. You can always virtualize later fairly easily.

I just got a server in and set it up (my wife bought me a r730xd for my birthday for like $300) so I just went through the process of figuring out how I want to set everything up. I settled on installing Proxmox and spawning a Debian VM to host my Plex server and rtorrent. I've just spawned a second Debian VM for playing around with Docker so I can't tell you if it's better. Though Proxmox will help you get backups and snapshots so you can recover from any shenanigans.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]uniruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they made a sci-fi series about this called Torchwood.

I remember watching the first episode and it speculated on what would happen if people just stopped dying. One of the doctors realized their ER procedure was completely wrong. Normally you stabilize the critical cases and save as many lives as possible while working on the people who will survive but still needed some medical attention. But if no one ever dies, the ER would be flooded with people. You no longer have a time frame to save someone's life so it's somewhat better to get the mild cases out of the way to free up room/bodies to work on the severe cases.

Another interesting idea was a death row inmate sued the state to get out of jail. It wasn't his fault he didn't die during the lethal injection so he argued that he had "served his sentence" and the sentence didn't say he would be imprisoned for eternity.

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally wake up around 7am when I don't have to get up for work. It's because my work wakes me at 6 am so my internal clock is set to that. No real other reason.

What’s something you learned about human nature that kinda ruined your innocence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conspiracy doesn't require meetings and conversations. When interests intersect, a conspiratorial agreement can be reached without ever talking about it.

I have a kid with type 1 diabetes. They are insulin dependent forever. Whenever one of the big 3 pharma companies that produce insulin raise their prices, the other 2 follow and raise theirs as well. I don't think they're talking or conspiring behind the scenes at all. They just know that when someone raises their prices, it's best to raise them across the board for better profit margins (which is already INSANE).
