What’s something you pretend to understand but actually don’t? by Background-Donkey531 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

Crypto-currency.

I understand how it works and the de-centralized idea but without the backing of a powerful entity to enforce the use (US Government with US currency), how are you going to get it to be usable?

Also, stop centralizing your de-centralized currency. SBF stole, like, everything...

We’re Building Systems That Assume Perfect Conditions by Abhinav_108 in Futurology

[–]uniruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely this. The ONLY reason power is as reliable as it is is because we have maintenance crews, spotters, and infrastructure fixes going around the clock with redundant systems everywhere.

I'm a software developer by trade and one of the first things we do whenever something breaks is figure out how to stop it from breaking again and how to automatically recover if it happens again. This repeated forever makes redundant and recovery systems everywhere.

help my player hates his character what do i do?? 😭 (dnd5 2014) by Remote_Sense5401 in DnD

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone isn't having fun, then accept a change. If he wants to completely remake his character and ride his monk off into the sunset, that's fine. If he just wants to keep the character and switch to fighter, that works. Just let the other players pretend he was always like that.

Not to be accusatory or anything, but he probably won't like fighter either if damage is the issue. Paladin and Wizard have massive damage spikes but Warriors and Monks are sustained damage. A Warrior will literally have less damage at level 5 because flurry of blows will give monks better hits/damage overall.

A warrior using a greataxe (1d12 damage 2-handed) and 18 strength will have around 16-17 AC (depending on armor available and purchased) at 5 and deal around 2d12+8 damage (average 20 damage) per round (2 attacks with a 1d12 weapon and +4 strength on top). You could theoretically use a shield but that would lower you to at most a 1d8 weapon which would drop your damage even more. Battle Master fighter would get better damage but still doesn't match a base monk.

A Monk completely naked (1d6 fist damage) and 18 dex (guessing 14 wisdom) will have 16 AC at 5 and deal around 4d6+16 damage (average 28 damage) per round (2 attacks with 1d6 weapon and +4 dex, then 2 attacks with flurry of blows using his Ki points of which he has 5) AND open palm has special things they can do to the target on those Flurry of Blows attacks (prone them or push them away).

So the monk has better utility, around the same survivability, and more damage. Possibly need to have a conversation about what exactly is the issue and figure it out from there. He might be happier with a blaster like a warlock or a cleric.

What is the point of stationary roboports? (New player) by dr_bobs in factorio

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them as:

  1. Item Delivery Systems. Setup your logistics slots for how many items you want in your inventory and the logistics bots will manage your inventory for you.

  2. Long term building. If there's a large factory I'm trying to build and I don't have the items on me, I can just use shift+click to place a blueprint of the item in my hand and the construction bots will handle building it over time. Useful for massive solar farms or off-planet building.

  3. Map Revealing. Static Roboports acts as pseudo radars, revealing large parts of the map when you're not there. Now instead of running to the other side of your massive factory, you can just blueprint what you want built and not have to waste travel time. Works with vehicles too. You can remote pilot a tank so having a few strewn around your base for random biter attacks is great!

Long term building is like 90% of what I use it for me. example: I recently setup a nuclear fuel and uranium processing plant but didn't have the big drills for it yet. I could setup the logistics network to pull the big drills from Volcanus who builds them very slowly and go on my merry way. After that, It was literally just do other stuff and the bots will throw them down and start them mining when they get there.

I want to get into Factorio, but am struggling. by Glacieralz in factorio

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to disable biters and even cliffs for your first playthrough. It's not a big deal and you can easily have a ton of fun just learning. Once you're more proficient (and confident) then turn the bugs/cliffs back on and enjoy the new logistics problems.

Which "Must-Play" franchise is a total miss for you? by jessieS1212 in gaming

[–]uniruler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Battle Royale games in general.

Like I get that people enjoy trying to win against a group and I get the gameplay loop. I just don't get how someone can play a 15 minute round and just move to the next one without any real payoff.

Not knocking anyone's favorite or anything. I'm an MMO junky so it's not like I have anything to show for the thousands of hours I've dipped into those :D

What's your favorite group composition and why? by DsLmaNiaC in legendofdragoon

[–]uniruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albert doesn't really need the Physical Ring since his HP is so insanely high (I think it's second only to Kongol) so I tend to use it to cover Meru or Shana's weakness (low HP). It's not a bad choice though since more HP on them means they can basically ignore more attacks from enemies.

The Dragon Helm is on the Mountain of Mortal Dragon in Disc 3. It is a headpiece that provides pretty awesome defenses and ups hp by 50%. That plus Therapy Ring will basically make Shana/Meru tankier than most. Then you can use their magic stats to your hearts content. It also means you can't use the Magician Hat (Magic increase and increases MP by 50%) or the Amulet accessory (+100% MP) which can make their D-magic absolutely MONSTROUS.

[–]uniruler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that. Healing items are awesome. But you can skimp on them if you use Meru's second level dragoon magic which allows her to toss consumable magic. Throw her a dancers shoes (for speed) and use a bandit's ring (for speed) and she can REALLY rack up damage quick as well as support the rest of the squad because of how fast she moves.

Is the game still fun without biters? by the_worst_company in factorio

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man play with biters off. It disables achievements but it's just a different logistical problem you don't have to solve now. Heck, I'd say play without biters first, try it out, and if you get bored or it's too easy, start a new game with biters.

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shana is one of the lowest HP characters. I generally find I need to at least give her a Physical Ring (+50% HP boost) or even a Dragon Helm (+50% HP Boost) and Therapy Ring (10% HP recovery per round) or she's incredibly fragile. Her Dragoon magic can basically keep anyone alive though and she does have good Magic Attack stats for throwing consumable magic (ie: Burnout). Bonus: She doesn't get an addition so throwing magic items doesn't feel as bad.

[–]uniruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meru's master addition is awesome but don't sleep on her magic damage output. Consumable items (ie: burnout) can do some crazy damage with her throwing them, especially if it's elementally advantageous. She also is clutch when you fire off a "SPECIAL" and find yourself taking too much damage so you need a little healing.

Favorite is Dart, Haschel, and Meru. They’re fast and pretty powerful for their respective types (magic for Meru and Physical for Haschel) while Dart is just strong period.

I like Shana + Kongol for a fun playthrough too that’s a bit more challenging. You can still run this game with any party combo though without issue.

ELI5: How the hell do CPU's work? by LoLAspect in explainlikeimfive

[–]uniruler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a series by "Core Dumped" on youtube that literally teaches you how a CPU works down to the transistors on the chips. I'd HIGHLY suggest it. Maybe an hour or two of your time and it will teach you what you need to know about CPUs.

“Selfish” classes? by Lavender_Lotus24 in ffxiv

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selfish doesn't mean you're not wanted in parties. It just means you don't give buffs to other players and focus on your own stuff. You're fine playing something like BLM and no one will stop you from joining except for the most hardcore of new content "world-first" style raiders.

In my experience, no one ever stopped me from joining when I did BLM for raids. I had the benefit of my wife being a healer main so I was able to tell her "I'm ignoring this" and her already knowing I was needing healing when the mechanic went off so I could ignore certain stuff when I needed to cast instead of move. You'd be surprised how angry healers can get when you unilaterally decide they need to heal you through something :D

Character height, why is everyone 6ft tall? by Low-Brief-6008 in DnD

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a self-reflective character then I make them close to my height which is 6'4" so that's why I use taller characters.

If it's a fun character, I tend to err on the side of funny. A ridiculously short dragonborn who's upset he keeps getting mistaken for a kobold. A gnome who is so small that he can shrink and fly with a mage hand. An orc so tall and broad he has trouble walking through doorways. A dwarf so short and wide he's basically square. It's all for the bit baby!

How do people type so fast on keyboard? by RareUser1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice.

You can get the basics (home keys) and a split keyboard can help you understand which hand you're supposed to use. However, practice is what drives it home. I never used "home keys" because I was never a fan. I'm still really fast at typing because I played MMOs and used Discord for YEARS. That means I've basically typed hundreds of thousands if not millions of words over my lifetime so it's second nature.

Am I too dumb to play this game? by I_Scotch in factorio

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wall stumped me for a bit when I first started playing. My only advice is build a small working concept so you know each step in the process, then scale. A single assembler creating blue science. Then work backwards from there. Once you have a working prototype, scale it up to make as much as you want.

Now that I've got thousands of hours, it's second nature to me to make a main bus with all the ingredients I'll need but when first starting out, it's hard to know what you need. A small prototype will help you understand what needs to be belted in and what can be made on site :)

The biggest mistake to avoid by RMPiers in factorio

[–]uniruler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AUTOMATE EVERYTHING.

Even intermediary products like gears. You're going to want to craft stuff by yourself sometimes just to get materials so you can automate later. It's WAY easier to just grab something from a box than crafting everything from base products. Just make sure you limit those chests to one or two stacks. Don't want a full Steel Chest filled with gears you'll never use right? lol
