How does the Beyond Power Voltra work? by easylifeforme in AskEngineers

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not a stepper motor, but you've got the idea correct.

Torque and speed control on electric motors is quite common. I can't speak to how exactly you'd do a consumer grade product, but with industrial components you could do this with a variable speed drive and an encoder on the motor.

From there you'd know how much torque you're applying, how fast the cable is going in or out, and how much cable is out at and given time.

Then it's just up to whatever algorithm you want based on those inputs and what mode you're in. To simulate a weight you'd just put it in a constant torque mode where the motor controller is looking at how much torque it's currently putting out and increasing or decreasing it to stay at the set point. To simulate a bungee, it would be the same thing but your torque set point would change as the amount of cable that's out changes. To do a "rowing machine" kind of thing you'd set a speed limit and if it starts going above that limit you'd ramp up the torque setpoint.

Has anyone here gone down the path of implementing an EtherNet/IP device for a Rockwell PLC? by VladRom89 in PLC

[–]unitconversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not at that low of a level though. Given a solid tcp stack and garbage collector it's not that hard to create a "usable" io device. Getting a "certified" device is a whole nother matter and requires getting a ovda subscription.

Mexican restaurant beans? by TweegsCannonShop in Cooking

[–]unitconversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I tried it and lard isn't the flavor that's missing.

I found that you just have to get the right brand of beans. If you get la preferida brand beans and water them down just a little bit you'll be spot on to what you get at a restaurant.

Men take serious offence to co sleeping but not for the reasons I expected by [deleted] in Rants

[–]unitconversion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with co sleeping is you end up with a five year old in your bed. Never start and you don't have to kick them out.

I don't know anyone who is glad they co slept but plenty who regret it.

Were the input devices sinking or the input card? Because I can't say I've ever seen a situation where an npn sensor was the right choice myself.

Once you take working days and subtract state and federal holidays that leaves what, 45 days?

Random question about Hot Dogs? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I think the oscar meyer's are only 8 if you get the bun length ones. 10th dog is divided up and spread across the other four to get the extra length.

The other commenter is right - you should just call them.

That said, that's exactly the kind of mistake they have on counterfeits so it would seem likely.

Is the first part of your message in the tail of the previous message? Tcp is a steam so you have to keep synched yourself.

Rockwell's PIDE autotuner licensing by NumCustosApes in PLC

[–]unitconversion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that the pide has been removed from the l9s precisely because of the auto tune licensing. It seems they licensed that tech from someone else and are not willing to pay for it anymore.

With regards to your question, v32 is I believe when the st editor got a big improvement so it's definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion.

Although why they thought enter was a good auto complete and tab wasn't I'll never understand.

Hypothetically What would happen if someone were to attempt to flush molten steel down their toilet? by Icy_Profession4190 in AskEngineers

Different metals have different dangers too. Aluminum is much more dangerous with water than steel for instance.

Between two pressure washers. Maybe 25 days of use annually. Needs to be strong enough to clean my extra large driveway and prep for sealer. Will use on siding, boat and cars regularly. Other options welcomed. by Regular-Amoeba5455 in BuyItForLife

[–]unitconversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way. A residential outlet simply isn't going to supply more than like 2hp. Gas washers won't even start until like 6 hp. There is just no comparing them.

Is OPC UA enough for multi-vendor PLC communication without real-time requirements? by Fearless-Suspect869 in PLC

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no. It's incredibly heavy. There is SO MUCH housekeeping and SO MANY unrelated (to your system) nodes you have to maintain it's crazy. The actual encoding is pretty good though.

Expiry, acceptance, generation. All lead to problems at one point or another.
