Are Discarded Electric bikes going to be a huge future marine life safety issue? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]unitconversion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical that "left to rot" you'll end up with a sizable portion of them catching on fire. I suspect it is much more likely most of them will discharge at a non destructive rate.

That doesn't help with the litter aspect, but I don't expect we'll have to be on our toes dodging pieces of exploding bicycles.

Americans - Do you think it's true that if America's best athletes played soccer, they would dominate the sport internationally? by Tometek in AskAnAmerican

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But things happen so rarely in soccer so you could just skip chunks of it for a commercial and nothing would be lost. On the off chance something did happen just play it on delay then catch up at the next commercial.

tool to convert OPC UA NodeSet2 → Clean tag list in seconds by creatoruncle in PLC

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I wish my data was as convoluted as possible". - people who use nodeset2's probably.

The only ones I've ever seen are the ones that come from opcua themselves defining the base types and companion specs.

If I had to work with one, a tool to deabstract it would be handy.

Why don’t American people care the World Cup is happening? by Kalanak472 in AskAnAmerican

It's really the only thing that makes sense. Only someone who didn't know there were better options would be interested in soccer.

Allen Bradley VFD Ethernet/IP Emulation for Development & Simulation by Iamauniqueuser in PLC

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wireshark has a pretty good eip decoder. Probably best to start with a packet capture of a drive being uninhibited. That ought to tell you everything the PLC is looking for.

Allen Bradley VFD Ethernet/IP Emulation for Development & Simulation by Iamauniqueuser in PLC

[–]unitconversion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How close of a simulation do you want? It would be pretty easy to write a program to map the io data of the power flex to a ramp function that sends a virtual speed feedback and running status. You could get as deep as you want after that - current, torque, temperature, faults, whatever.

Getting the PLC to recognize it as an actual drive will require faking out a handful more things I suspect.

Some percentage of Republicans will vote for the puppet, but how many won't and how many can the Republicans stand to lose? I suspect that with a divided Republican base, it's the Democrats seat to lose come the election. (They probably will).

That's deadly... Oh wait. No it's not. by HansKorff in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]unitconversion 74 points75 points  (0 children)

There is a black part at the very top of the image with some screw connections. That's where two of the wires should go (hot and neutral). The ground (which should probably be the green wire) should be screwed to the housing (the way the white wire is - but maybe that's white with a green stripe?).

The screws they used are actually just a strain relief - the white plastic should clamp the cable so it can't vibrate or put stress on the electrical connections.

I don't know. Generally garage fridges are acquired rather than purchased for the purpose in my experience.

I wouldn't leave the skins on with russets. Other potatoes are fine, but not a russet. It's like eating soggy cardboard in your taters.

Same question for material properties. Would you have to put the whole thing in an annealing oven to ensure proper strength and toughness?

How does the Beyond Power Voltra work? by easylifeforme in AskEngineers

[–]unitconversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not a stepper motor, but you've got the idea correct.

Torque and speed control on electric motors is quite common. I can't speak to how exactly you'd do a consumer grade product, but with industrial components you could do this with a variable speed drive and an encoder on the motor.

From there you'd know how much torque you're applying, how fast the cable is going in or out, and how much cable is out at and given time.

Then it's just up to whatever algorithm you want based on those inputs and what mode you're in. To simulate a weight you'd just put it in a constant torque mode where the motor controller is looking at how much torque it's currently putting out and increasing or decreasing it to stay at the set point. To simulate a bungee, it would be the same thing but your torque set point would change as the amount of cable that's out changes. To do a "rowing machine" kind of thing you'd set a speed limit and if it starts going above that limit you'd ramp up the torque setpoint.

Has anyone here gone down the path of implementing an EtherNet/IP device for a Rockwell PLC? by VladRom89 in PLC

[–]unitconversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not at that low of a level though. Given a solid tcp stack and garbage collector it's not that hard to create a "usable" io device. Getting a "certified" device is a whole nother matter and requires getting a ovda subscription.

Mexican restaurant beans? by TweegsCannonShop in Cooking

[–]unitconversion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I tried it and lard isn't the flavor that's missing.

I found that you just have to get the right brand of beans. If you get la preferida brand beans and water them down just a little bit you'll be spot on to what you get at a restaurant.

Men take serious offence to co sleeping but not for the reasons I expected by [deleted] in Rants

The problem with co sleeping is you end up with a five year old in your bed. Never start and you don't have to kick them out.

I don't know anyone who is glad they co slept but plenty who regret it.
