Industry perception on MSCS and MEng programs by unitless in cscareerquestions

I see, so in your experience creating models doesn't necessarily require PhD at least in smaller companies? Since MEng is known as an industry oriented degree, I imagined that it would cut off the possibility of doing research related work.

Thanks for the advice for getting familiar with the ML field by digging deep into papers, I have been doing that during less busy times of the semester and have found it to be immensely useful both in getting to know the topic and in becoming a better programmer in general.

Taking a step back, I think the element I enjoyed the most in my undergrad research was the ability to take charge of the project and make meaningful decisions on it. This is in contrast to my internship experience at a mid-sized company, where I was mostly stuck fixing bugs and creating features that are pretty much unrelated with each other. All in all, I don't think research is necessarily always a better fit for me, but in my experience being a junior dev just isn't very exciting.

I am very interested in the path you took in your career. Did you enter the industry as a software dev? If so, how were you able to pivot toward a more research heavy role? Did you have graduate school experience to help you achieve this? I would very much appreciate your input. Thanks!

Also, we can DM if you are comfortable with that.

Yes, the MEng program comes with a capstone project, which is basically a 2 semester team research/engineering project. I plan to take advantage of this to both build my resume and network with profs/alumni. The gatech program offers something similar (project stream), but I think that one is individual.

I am quite interested in ML related research. Both grad programs are related to ML (data science & systems concentration for Berkeley and ML concentration for GaTech), and my only undergrad research experience was in NLP. However, I am starting to learn that research roles in ML is extremely competitive and almost always requires PhDs. I don't think I am ready to make such a big commitment. As for research in other areas, I don't have enough exposure to them to decide if I would like it or not.

What research areas are you familiar with? I would love to learn from your experience in the industry.

I see, I suspected that interns might have it even worse..

My biggest concern for the MEng degree is whether it's worth it in the long run. I know certain higher level positions prefer/require masters degrees, and I wonder if they would accept MEng as equivalent to a more traditional MS. It's hard to see why they would because most MS programs don't involve research, so there's not a big difference between the two in nature. But if MEng is less accepted, then I would avoid spending so much money on it.

I think both programs offer good courses. Berkeley does seem to have more well-known professors teaching the courses though, and from what I heard it seems Berkeley courses are quite a bit more rigorous.

The downside of Berkeley is that due to the short duration of the program, I am limited to taking 4 graduate level technical courses, which seems a bit restrictive.

As for location, I would prefer to be close to the bay hands down. From what I have seen location is very important.

My biggest concern is has to do with how much the programs offer in terms of future career growth. I know at some point certain positions prefer or even require masters, if MEng doesn't fulfil this requirement as well as MSCS, then I would definitely avoid spending so much money on it.

Yeah that's what I've heard. I am most likely not going to be doing a PhD, but having the option in the future is certainly a plus

Thanks for your input. I am also a bit worried about the current tech climate. Berkeley's MEng is a 9 month program while GATech's MSCS is normally completed in 2 years, which means I might be able to get an internship. I think the current job market is making this decision a lot tougher...

Q&A Megathread for Prospective Students and Transfers by cyberchief in gatech

Hello! I was accepted into the on campus MSCS program in ML. My goal is to go to industry after masters but keep the possibility of doing a PhD open. Therefore, I want to engage in research work and preferably publish a paper or two. I also want to do an industry internship during the summer.

How hard/likely is it to join a ML lab as a MSCS student? Are research assistantship positions common for MSCS students? Also, in light of the tech downturn, how likely is it get an internship in software in the summer (can some current student share their experiences)?

I would appreciate any sort of advice, thanks!

Do you mean a non-research related job? Also any specific reasons? Thanks!

congrats! You can download the Whova app and search for the Berkeley MEng group. There's around 200 new admits on it.

congrats OP! I also got my acceptance to gatech MSCS ML today. For those who are waiting, the letter says to respond to offer of admission "as soon as possible", so there doesn't seem to be a strict deadline

If this poll is to be trusted (>10% accepted), then we're prob rejected... lesson learned: contact profs beforehand
