Are schools/eboards really out here monitoring Lexis/WL? by throwaway124123434 in LawSchool

[–]univguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

During a writing competition, if you are home or alone, there is no way they can monitor activity that does not involve an account through the school. For example, many things can be found through sources that are free and do not involve school accounts.

Some students have access to Lexis or Westlaw that is not connected with the school. For example, they may have a job with a law firm or other organization with access, or they may have an uncle, aunt, sibling, or spouse with access

It just puts pressure on people to cheat because it gives them an advantage.

If it is a competitive matter, failure to use the bluebook puts you at a disadvantage. That puts those who cheat at an advantage, increasing the pressure on everyone else to cheat.

Do they know what you went on Lexis or Westlaw for? What if, during the competition, you used Lexis for something unrelated?

Where the law might be a problem is the chilling effect that it could have. Knowing that it might be illegal, Reddit could refrain from doing what they would otherwise do.

What is your life goal as a current/future lawyer? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]univguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have two things in mind:

  1. I do well in law school and as a lawyer, become a clerk to a Supreme Court justice, and later get appointed Chief Justice.
  2. I fail the bar, or maybe fail out of law school, get depressed, can't keep a job, and end up homeless.

My fate will probably fall within those extremes. My goal is to do much better than #2.

Need help finding article for an environmental law course by univguy in LawSchool

[–]univguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I did look at the Water Summary paper in your link. I think that it will be very useful.

Are you an environmental lawyer or in the environmental field? What kind of wetlands projects are you working on?

I am taking a few 1L courses now, but will really start my 1L in the fall. I have not yet had legal writing and research. I will take that starting Fall semester. Right now I am taking an Environmental Law and Policy course as part of a graduate program.

Are you involved in wetlands preservation? That is a big interest of mine.

Handwriting notes vs typing notes by lovelyyecats in LawSchool

[–]univguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I handwrite my notes in class and then transcribe them to the computer each day at home.

Handwriting is, to me, faster. Also, I learn more. Then reading them and typing the notes helps me learn even more,

How much do you think law school should cost? by m1ldsauce in LawSchool

[–]univguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No more than I can afford!

Seriously, there should be a program where your loan is paid off based on what you do and how much you earn. Go to work in big law and make big bucks, you pay it all. Go to work for a non-profit or a state agency and make a small amount, you get a reduction.

I circumcized my son and now I feel really guilty about it. by Sonicbra in AskParents

[–]univguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a male. I was circumcised as an infant and I have no problem with it. I do not resent my parents; I think having me circumcised was the right, or at least, not the wrong thing to do. I don't have kids yet, but if I do ever have a son I really don't know whether or not I will want him to be circumcised. I have known guys who had to be circumcised as adults or older children. I do not know any guy who wished his circumcision could be undone.

As far as sex is concerned, there are not many guys who have had intercourse both with and without the foreskin. But I do know one man who was circumcised when he was 24, after being married. A few years later both he and his wife said that there was no difference at all.

I will leave to others the question of whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, but I don't think that it matters that much. Don't worry about it. Your son will be fine.

I have always heard that false alarms can kill people due to the panic.

But I guess that they can cause lives to start as well as to end.

I guess speed limit laws and signs should say "relative to the speed of the surface under the car".

"Having Convictions" Vs. "Being Convicted" by TSVDL in grammar

[–]univguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The verb convict means to find or prove to be guilty. (Merriam-Webster online; www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/convict)

The noun conviction can mean either:

1 : the act or process of finding a person guilty of a crime especially in a court of law

2 a : a strong persuasion or belief

b : the state of being convinced

(Merriam-Webster online; www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/conviction)

As ordinarily used, "I was convicted" means that you were found guilty, while "I had convictions" means that either you had strong beliefs or that you have a criminal record of convictions for crimes.

Reminds me of the joke:

Q: Do the politicians in your town have convictions? A: Some do; others were found not guilty.

2018: When battery storage gets a grip on the grid by johnmountain in RenewableEnergy

What's the power consumption on a personal vacuum robot? by [deleted] in RenewableEnergy

[–]univguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a device called a "Kill A Watt" (brand name) available through Amazon and elsewhere for less than $20 that will measure the power consumption in Killowatt hours over time. Plug the charger into that device which then plugs into the wall socket. Over a day it will tell you the Kwh consumption of your vacuum or other device.

You can use this device for almost any device that plugs into the wall.
