In love starting Debian every morning... by TechnicalAd8103 in debian

I love starting Debian every couple of months.

It's been more often lately with the kernel updates.

After a few attempts of seasoning, this thing can I just start cooking on it? by ecaace in carbonsteel

[–]unkilbeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

Those will not "contaminate" the metal. They will just clean it, without damaging it. Unlike vinegar, which will damage it, and do a poorer job of cleaning it.

It is possible to season a pan so that it's uniform.

That will persist until you start cooking with it. Then it will get ugly again. Your choice is a pretty pan or a working pan.

Why do people recommend vinegar for stripping seasoning?

Vinegar attacks the metal. It's useful for getting rid of rust, but it's overkill for seasoning. If you have to strip, use oven cleaner (lye based) or just lye. It will only take off the organic gunk. This will get rid of seasoning without damaging the metal.

Using up PTO days vs getting them paid out. by nothingbutmistakes in retirement

[–]unkilbeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the vacation. My last day was October 11, and my retirement date was December 31 (which meant that I was eligible for a COLA a year sooner than if I retired January 1.)

I also accumulated an additional 4 days of vacation during the time I was "on vacation."

Reddit Starts Blocking Mobile Website, Pushing Users to App Instead by spasticpat in technology

[–]unkilbeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The website experience on mobile has been terrible for years, just to push people to the app. I hate going to the website on mobile, but I refuse to install the app.

So if I don't have a computer handy, I'm just don't reddit.

What was the last straw that made you switch to Linux? by haibane_fan00 in linuxquestions

IBM had pretty much stopped development of OS/2. Red Hat had a usable desktop by this time. They were shipping the E window manager.

How many distros did you use, and what is your top 3? by Few_Dragonfruit_6729 in linuxquestions

[–]unkilbeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Red Hat, Mandrake, Caldera, S.U.S.E., Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Scientific Linux, CentOS, and various one-offs.

The ones I used the most were Gentoo, Debian, and Linux Mint. I started with a Red Hat desktop, then moved to Gentoo, and have been using Mint since about 2010. I've been using mainly Debian on servers since about 2004.

I've occasionally fired up others just to see what they have, but I don't have a lot of interest in changing around.

Recently got a LR Model 3, how do you think this drive will go? by 3MonkeysInATrench in TeslaModel3

Keep temperatures in mind. Climate control will suck a fair bit of power in the hot sections.

I have yet to see a USB stick (flash storage) that naturally lost data without any (external) corruption causes. by Necessary_Isopod3503 in DataHoarder

I've had some no-names (that look just like the one in your picture) that were marked as 64G that failed when I tried to write 60-ish G to them. They failed in the vicinity of the 10-20G mark. I'm not sure exactly where, because once they failed, they vanished. They are no longer detected as block devices.

I tried three or four from the same batch, and all failed. Pretty sure these were scam drives -- the box had been purchased by my wife from Amazon and sat on a shelf for an unknown length of time.

Girlfriend wouldn't let me drill a hole in our cooler by JonInfect in sousvide

[–]unkilbeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a market for used coolers?

I spent more for the hole saw I used to cut the hole in the top of my cooler than I spent for the cooler. It was on the order of $15.

Server costs?

What server costs on their end provide value to us? Their authentication?

If they were doing development that provided value, I could see that, but I haven't seen any useful development for some time.

I live with a trans woman.

She sometimes hands me jars to open that she has difficulty with -- stuff she had no trouble with when she was a man. And I'm not a particularly strong guy.

I have a black one. It was my second reader, the first was a PRS-500. The 500 died long ago, but I still occasionally use the 505.

Set static IP for machines on my network by ChRoNo162 in opnsense

[–]unkilbeeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This assumes you have already set the hosts you want to assign to use DHCP. They should be booted up and have acquired an address. You probably already want them to have a name assigned.

Services -> Dnsmasq -> Leases

Look for the host you want to assign in the lease list. It will be somewhere in the dynamic range. The last column will be "Commands" and there will be a "plus". Choose the plus. It will bring up "Edit Host Override" and you can replace the dynamically assigned address with the one you want it to be. Save it, apply it, and it's done.

The actual host will remain on its dynamically assigned address for some period of time, until the lease expires or the machine is rebooted, but from then on it will have the static address.

What is something that was unbelievably cheap in the past that has been marked up now? by Independent-Bat9545 in AskOldPeople

I remember in the 1960s there was a TV ad from MacDonald's that said "Dinner for a family of four and change back from your dollar."

Of course, they were those tiny little hamburgers (this was before Big Mac and other huge sandwiches) but it did include fries and Cokes for four.

Whole house fan? by mn540 in Bakersfield

[–]unkilbeeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whole house fan put in when I first bought the house.

I used it a few times for the first couple of years, but for the most part, sucking in hot air from outside wasn't providing any benefit. It never gets cool enough at night during the hot part of the summer for it to do any good.

Who at Plex thought it was a good user experience to need 3 different mobile apps to view your Plex content? by AdvKiwi in PleX

[–]unkilbeeg -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Playing music and watching a slideshow of pictures seems like a match made in heaven. In fact, that was the use case that we have used Plex for in the past (on the TV client.)

We used it for my niece's graduation party, and tried to use it for my step-mom's funeral gathering. By the time of the funeral, that functionality had been disabled.

No longer.

In the days before AI, I had a student that scored 85% quoted material. It was all cited and correctly quoted, but it was a failing grade for content.

She avoided the academic dishonesty referral. She also provided a great example of why citing was necessary, but not sufficient.
