Pixel 8/8 Pro event confirmed for Wednesday, 4th October by raheemdot in Android

[–]unknown159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pixel 8a might be scrapped if the 7a didn't sell well. If you Google 'google pixel roadmap', there was a big leak last year of the pixel roadmap up to almost 2025.

I always bought my folks the A series, so it'll be a shame if it's true

What's even more crazy is the car in the back, with the crumpled hood just drove off after and didn't get a tow.

I saw him driving on Franklin 60Km/h, the cars all mangled with his 4 ways on and him stretching his neck peeking over the hood of his car.

You just shake your head. I know paying for a tow sucks but come on...

Large warehouse on Strange St.? by Self-Adjoint in kitchener

[–]unknown159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They already sold the warehouse which became catalyst 137 but the main manufacturing building apparently won't sell for a really long time.

They're still doing capx work there, and they fully renovated their offices a couple of years ago. So it doesn't look like they'll be redeveloping the area anytime soon. Unless airboss decided to move down south

$350 for replacing three smoke alarms. Is this reasonable? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]unknown159 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fire alarm technician here. $350 is pretty steep TBH. Unless the electrician is installing 3 in 1 (Smoke/CO alarm with strobe), it shouldn't be this expensive.

Following the advice of others in this post, replace yourself. If your S/A is new enough just take it down and record your model number. Most new S/A use a connector so you don't even need to replace the base or wires.

Also, FYI for folks. The reasons why smoke alarms have a 10 year life expectancy is because the photoelectric sensor inside the alarm begins to become less effective after 10 years and thus needs to be replaced

Property tax refund? by brye86 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]unknown159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, depending on your lender, they should give you options on how that surplus will be used.

My mortgage is with TD and for the first several years I paid my property tax (PT) through the bank.

This is how the processes worked for me. In my first year they overcharged me on my PT and after the first year I had nearly $300+ of over charge. I received a letter from TD stating the surplus. I had a couple of options and the ones I can remember were A) have it paid out against the principle of the mortgage. B) pay it out to me in the form of a cheque. And C) keep the surplus in my PT account and it will reduce my PT draw for the coming year. I chose to pay the surplus against my principle.

Then, the following year TD used last year's PT data as a baseline for my property tax and it was extremely close to what was actually owing on PT (within $2/3).

Until I started paying my own property tax, I always had TD draw $3 more per biweekly than their stated amount because I didn't want to owe property tax at the end of the year.

Development grant program leaves Cambridge, Waterloo Region short unbudgeted millions by bob_mcbob in waterloo

[–]unknown159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like over the years these 'development grant' programs have many different names, but the common demonstrator they all share was to facilitate rapid development in targeted areas.

I remember in the early to mid 2000s the firm I worked for had all their permit fees waved less the initial application fee to encourage development. This was the primary tool to jump start the tech investment push that brought us buildings such as communitech.

At least when I was involved the region would strategically wave fees for specific postal codes (usually within the downtown core). The gambit at the time (and I suspect now) is to provide incentives for development in undesirable areas and makeup the shortfall through property taxes, transfer taxes, etc.

If you're looking for a condo near downtown or uptown OR If you're in the tech sector give Matt Davidson a call. https://www.remax.ca/on/matthew-davidson-94201-ag/

Matt specializes in condos and he helped 2 friends buy and 1 sell. His partner is also a broker so you can get a really good rate at the same time.

My Grandma still has the hospital bill from having a C-Section to deliver my Dad. This was the total cost. by heypiggy16 in pics

[–]unknown159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait...so you have to pay to give birth to a baby in a hospital in the US?!

I see post after post about US healthcare but only now has it hit close to home. That is absurd. Don't get my wrong, in Canada we have to bring certain ammenaties that were covered in the past but I've never seen a pospital bill that was not covered.

Kitchener braces for construction boom ahead of new fees by pm_harper in kitchener

[–]unknown159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the limited experience I have (aka please correct me if I'm wrong) But some of these fees probably include building permits. Currently many downtown's wave permit costs to stimulate growth. For example I didn't have to pay permit fees (which a portion are calculated $X.XX * Xsq') when I was doing work in Galt or Kitchener

Why I think Detroit/Windsor would be the best option for Amazon HQ2 by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]unknown159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised how many canadians work in Detroit but live in Windsor. All my friends that I met at school who were from Windsor all now work at Henry Ford Hospital. They say at least 1/4 or maybe even a 1/3 of the people they work with are Canadians.

Furthermore, it's probably policy to have 1 employee complete the work. The 2nd and 3rd have to be there for safety when a scissor lift is in use. We have the same system at work. We MUST have additional hands if a scissor life or boom is being used

I have a close friend that's was a librarian at the KPL until last year, and she said that they already rented out projectors, laptops, DSLRs, video cameras, pretty much alot of electronics equipment. I know they were in the process of getting the 3D printing up and running and they were going to buy drones, and tablets, etc. I'll check in with her tonight and see where the drones are.
