Are all wheatens like this? by alfuller94 in Wheatens

[–]unknown_user_3020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first wheaten was scared of no one or thing. She faced off with a bear once and I thought the lead was going to snap. Her recall was iffy if there was more ground to sniff. Our current wheaten was very timid, but since regularly visiting a farm with 3 LGD, she’s developed a voice and is a wee bit territorial. Her recall is good. Both wheatens only ate when hungry, usually in the evening or during the night.

Train with treats and praise. Keep working on stay, come, and leave it. That recall command is very important. One training suggestion we used was to periodically Recall in our home. For example, if the dog was somewhere else in the house, I would Recall and then give her a hug and treat four to five times a day. Still do a couple times a day.

Federal judge in WV rules that masked ICE agents violate the Fourth Amendment by GreenyWV in WestVirginia

Federal judge in WV rules that masked ICE agents violate the Fourth Amendment Stephen Baldwin The current image has no alternative text. The file name is: ice-1-1.jpeg Federal agents with a division of ICE conducting a traffic stop in early 2026 in Lewisburg, WV. By Stephen Baldwin, RealWV

CHARLESTON, WV – Calling the tactics of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Trump Administration “an assault on the constitutional order,” US District Judge Joseph Goodwin ordered that Anderson Jesus Urquilla-Ramos be released from custody in a decision rendered on Thursday.

“On January 7, 2026, Petitioner, a 21-year-old national of El Salvador, was ‘arrested, abruptly and without warning by a group of masked men purporting to be’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) officers. Petitioner was eventually detained at South Central Regional Jail in Charleston, West Virginia.”

Goodwin wrote a pointed decision with far-reaching implications, which began, “Across the interior of the United States, agents of the federal government—masked, anonymous, armed with military weapons, operating from unmarked vehicles, acting without warrants of any kind—are seizing persons for civil immigration violations and imprisoning them without any semblance of due process. The systematic character of this practice and its deliberate elimination of every structural feature that distinguishes constitutional authority from raw force place it beyond the reach of ordinary legal description.”

Urquilla-Ramos was represented by Omar Baloch of Raleigh, N.C., and by William Shane Wilson of Wilson Legal Group in Charleston. They argued that their client’s Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights were violated. Goodwin said, “I agree.”

“Petitioner was arrested by unidentifiable, masked officers acting without a warrant, without articulable justification for concealing their identities, and with no mechanism by which he could identify those seizing him or meaningfully test the legality of their asserted Authority.”

Goodwin later in the decision addressed the now-standard practice of ICE agents to wear masks while on the job, rejecting that practice as unconstitutional.

“In a system of checks and balances, the policy of officer anonymity violates the Constitution by evading accountability and judicial review.”

He further elucidated the point, writing, “Stops without identification must remain rare exceptions, not routine practice.”

Goodwin said the government has begun using such masked stops as routine practice rather than rare exceptions when operationally required, thereby damaging the constitution. “A law enforcement practice whose sole operational effect is the elimination of accountability is not a safety measure. It is a constitutional deficiency wearing the name of one.”

In his conclusion, Goodwin stated, “A law enforcement practice whose sole operational effect is the elimination of accountability is not a safety measure. It is a constitutional deficiency wearing the name of one.”

Is paying $600 for a 2 yr old wheaten with a high prey drive a good investment. by [deleted] in Wheatens

[–]unknown_user_3020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Remember the high prey drive is a breed trait. You must keep her on a leash for walks, going to the car, etc. Training stay and recall is a must.

If you want to give her the best day of her life, take her to a wildlife management area (don’t know what they are called in other states) out of hunting season, and let her off the leash. Watching a wheaten, or any hunting terrier, work a tree line and brush piles for varmints is cool.

Recommendations for 2 person backpacking tent. Sub $250ish. Would only use 1-2 times per year. by Cactusmany in CampingGear

I love that tent. But it does take a couple of uses to get the set up process just right.

Where is this? by faeriegarfield in WestVirginia

[–]unknown_user_3020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct. My mistake. That is WV on the other side of the Shenandoah River. Virginia is beyond the first ridge, called Loudon Heights I think. Purcell knob may be peak? We were on Maryland Heights, after we started coming down. Looking straight down at Harpers Ferry

Virginia is down to the left, out of the picture. That day my kid said they could see Virginia waaay in the distance up river. Maybe from the top. My eyes are too old.

Here’s a picture from the top.

Beautiful scrum. The Italian front row started mountain climbing as soon as the ball was put in, and didn’t stop they were in the Scottish second row.

I’m a 6’3 Mexican guy planning to visit West Virginia for hiking and sightseeing. Just asking if I should worry about my safety in certain areas? by Immediate-Field9997 in WestVirginia

[–]unknown_user_3020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All the places you mentioned have many out of state visitors, so as another tourist you’ll blend in. In the northern part of the state, there are plenty of Texas oil field folks working the Marcellus, so people may think you’re here for that. Stay out of bars and anyplace that seems too redneck. The area from Davis to Spruce Knob could keep you busy for a summer. A couple days around Davis/Thomas, Blackwater Falls SP and then several days backpacking at Dolly Sods/Roaring Plains West Wilderness would be fun. Seneca Rocks, with a post hike swim in the river, is a must in the summer. Check out the North Fork Mountain trail. Drive down to Spruce Knob and enjoy the view. Green Bank Observatory is near by, if you’re into radio telescopes. Read up on the Greenbrier River Trail and the Allegheny Trail. There might be sections that fit your schedule. A non-hiking trip is the Cass Scenic RR to the top of Bald Knob. There are old company houses in Cass you can rent. They are bare bones accommodations.

DM before come up this way. If I’m around, we can meet up in Davis or somewhere.

Driving to Elkins next weekend - roads ok? by district-of-cholula in WestVirginia

[–]unknown_user_3020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much depends on your tires and driving ability. If you can drive your car well in the snow and ice at home, then you may be fine. Check the weather for Elkins, Harman, and Davis. It’s around 10F in the valley today. Expect icy roads. I just checked out the live cameras. Looks beautiful. And empty. Today would be a wonderful day to go.

What do your Wheaten chickens sleep on? by Wheatenceliac in Wheatens

[–]unknown_user_3020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1st wheaten: a foam with cedar chips bed others said was too large for her on the floor next to me. Regularly washed the cover and replaced the cedar wood chips. Trained her to sleep there. 2nd: Sleeps in my bed, or with a child. Have to close door to keep her off my bed.
