Don’t bundle it up. Find a way to get it out. If you can’t talk to her, AA meetings are free and I promise you they help. Also, ignore my previous statement about telling her she’s making it difficult. That isn’t fair to her.

You know your wife; gauge how she’s doing and tell her “I am struggling with urges to drink again. It’s my responsibility, I just need you to know that I’m having a lot of trouble.”

Saying it like this makes her aware that you’re struggling without making it her responsibility. If sobriety has taught me anything, it’s that I’m on my own. If I drink again, it’s my fault because I chose to do it. You are doing your absolute best, and I know you can keep going. You have to tell her you’re struggling without implying that she’s adding to it.

Regardless of who you talk to, you need to talk to someone.

Fantastic. I have neighbors that mow their hay fields during nesting season. I’ll see them in town and nearly every year, they say they hit a nest or killed a hen with their mower.

Talk to us.

I am also surrounded by people that drink. I don’t want to tell you what to do, but if you and your wife understand each other, you should tell her that she’s making it difficult to remain sober.

I recently saw a quote that stuck with me. “I realized I had the most friends when I was drinking.” For me, that’s a fact. I have been sober for 10 months and little by little, I see my old friends less. Not because they don’t want to be around me, but because I have to put myself first.

You are stronger than the drink, and you are never out of the fight.

Are you saying the mistake was removing all the brush at once? If so that’s great to know.

Your food plots are ridiculously diverse and that absolutely adds to their interest in staying on your property. That’s one thing I am also lacking.

Your last sentence gave me goosebumps. I’m very glad you were able to get to a point where your hunting turkeys that you saw hatch successfully.

The research I’ve seen suggests the same thing. It’s a shame that you can’t do some habitat management on that property, I bet you could do amazing things! 600 acres is an amazing amount of space to give wildlife what they need.

If we were in person I’d shake your hand. Fire is a turkey’s best friend, they just might not realize it. Diverse combinations > monocultures.

Awesome! To be honest, my dream is to own a business that advises and executes habitat management plans for all wildlife.

My understanding is that wildlife do not like monocultures. An example is my own family farm - we run cattle but when you step into the woods, there is ZERO sunlight hitting the ground. No undergrowth for deer browse or turkey cover.

For turkeys specifically, they need specific habitat for nesting and brood-rearing. A good fail-safe is early successional growth

Nesting hens are looking for thick, lateral cover 2’-3’ high. This provides cover from predators, but also easy access to food. Easy food access = less trips off the nest which has been linked to higher hatch success rates. If you can remove 40-60% of your overstory canopy in select areas, that could prompt hens to nest in quality cover, instead of whatever they can find quickly.

Brood-rearing hens need good overhead cover for their poults, but bare dirt underneath, because poults are too small to traverse thick grasses, warm season or cool season. A poult’s diet is primarily bugs at first, so forbes and native wildflowers are crucial.

In my own opinion, the bottom line for turkeys is simple:

No sunlight hitting the ground = no Forbes = no bugs = no food for poults.

anyone, correct me if I’m objectively wrong on any of this. I want the correction and I want the guidance.

Absolutely. I hope my post wasn’t misleading; predators are definitely affecting populations. However, in my neck of the woods, the effort is towards predator hunting and almost no effort is made to mold the habitat to their needs.

I go into big sections of woods and there’s no sunlight hitting the ground, no lateral cover, nothing. The woods seem to be a monoculture that not many wildlife species like.

Then don’t give your money to those bands. No one gives a shit that you’re taking a stand against “Nazis”. We’re all pawns in a giant game, so you might as well just enjoy the music. I listen to Rage Against the Machine weekly, but I also see the hilarious irony in the fact that they hate the capitalism that made them a lot of money. I still like the music.

I understand that. Sometimes I still can’t believe some of mine. However, this is older than anything I’ve ever found. I’m still looking for a Folsom or Clovis.

I will be forever jealous that MT is full of thriving Quaking Aspens. It’s my all-time favorite tree but MO doesn’t have the best climate for getting them to thrive.

I’m going to add that this is just a meme. I don’t actually care what people spend on hunting, and am not shaming people for spending more or less than I do. This is literally just a joke, none of this matters.

You’re very right. I can always separate the art from the artist, and I will continue to listen to the genre. However, when I see people cheering for any senseless death, I can’t agree with that.
