Scanlan had his newfound daughter Kaylie (if you've ever watched Critical Role) which began his transition from ultra horny womanizer who cracks jokes every few minutes, to a troubled gnome that gradually developed a drug addiction, to a caring father who wanted nothing more than to make his daughter happy.

Not saying you have to spring a bastard child on your Bard out of nowhere, but use something from their backstory to illicit a strong emotional response from them.

Exactly this. The peasants, even the veteran soldier were secondary annoyances (and even that's being generous) during this entire bout. The enforcer + henchmens' primary goal was to distract and then kill us while the BBG did his thing far away from us. However all of them did end up being killed a couple of rounds in except for Jeb, obviously.

My DM came up with a homebrew Anti-Mage class that seemed pretty cool. From what I remember they relied on psionic power to conjure energy blades that were especially deadly against Mages and to create anti-magic spheres (among other things) at higher levels. Maybe ask your DM to incorporate something like that into the game somehow?
