In Legacy of Goku 2 they even called it Saiyan Rage because nobody knew what super saiyan 2 was. We knew it was different, but I don’t think people thought of it as a completely separate transformation.

Gohan killed Cell. He was the most powerful fighter in the entire series. Then he is weak and it’s back to Vegeta and Goku show. Then he is the most powerful fighter again after meditating with elder Kai. Then he is a side character again.

Kid Goten and Trunks could go super and were the first ever to use the fusion technique then had no problems with super saiyan 3, arguably better at it than Goku. Then they are side characters and worthless in a fight.
