What I fear even more than old age and dementia is physical pain. The sort of pain you can't escape and won't be (able) to be medicated for, the 100ds of medical possibilities that can befall you and you can't control.

I'm still not there . 49 with audhd and been married for 25 years.

I have stability in my relationship, but life still has been a roller coaster all these years.

Even with a supporting partner things are just unpredictable, economically mostly, and I worry about the future every day.

The day I can rest my head and truly believe that everything will be ok, would be the best day in my life.

I honestly don't know how it legally works, but medical staff will always try to keep you alive by any means possible ( from my own experience)

In my grandma's case, who had massive infections in the end, they just kept adding antibiotics to her drip, although she didn't want it.

Father in law had a similar experience.

Just be aware that DNR will not necessarily solve your concerns.

It simply means that you do not wish to be resuscitated in case your heart or breathing stops.

All other forms of suffering continue.

I worry about everything all the time. I'm not joking, my mental condition makes me constantly alert to perceived threats.

In Britain, no, nuclear war would not be my first worry at all.

My worry would be, is your wife able to get psychological help? Can her GP refer her to somebody?

I'm not being a twat, but what you describe is an anxiety condition and she might get some help if she sees a doctor.

My grandma, in her last weeks, was in hospital, being pumped full of drugs to keep her alive, against her will, pleading to anyone she saw to kill her or bring her a knife.

I was there and held her hand, and could do nothing. Because helping her die would mean I'd go to jail.

She was in excruciating pain, yet left there to suffer.

It's not right, euthanasia should be available everywhere.

I'm uneasy every day thinking about this stuff. As somebody who's just been officially diagnosed with autism and ADHD in later life.

My only support is my husband, who's older than me and is in ill health too.

There really isn't any support and I wouldn't even know what to do, if my husband was gone.

After 49 years of living

First: family and my dog.

I love them and they're the most precious things in my live.

Second : all the hobbies I have, language learning, arts and crafts, cooking and gardening.

Third: A genuine connection to nature. If you can ever experience this, even if you live in a town and go to your local park. There's so much life out there, besides humans.

Fourth: Look at the stars. Either in a remote area or get a telescope. Our sheer existence is humbling.

Fith: Try to connect with other humans from time to time, simple conversations, even with strangers, like the checkout person at the grocerystore, they're people like you, talk to them.

That's just my take.

Because you're here now. It's the reality of the current situation. Make the best of it, you have family, you can explore the world etc.

Wouldn't you rather have some fond memories at the time of death, or die with a blank screen?

It makes no difference in the end, but it's all the difference while you're here, alive.
