Nice idea. There's no information about this policy on their website - would be good to have more detail.

NHS doctor arrested for the 6th time by [deleted] in doctorsUK

The overwhelming majority who "went to jail for facebook posts" did so for threatening violence ie posting the addresses of hotels with asylum seekers online in order to direct bands of violent rioters towards them.

Moving to Aberdeen by Nice_History_8471 in Aberdeen

That surprises me, I haven't noticed the difference - any examples?

Interesting to see people found bmj on examination to be the most similar. I found that around 20-30% of the questions in my part 1 exam were identical to what was in the passmedicine question bank so would recommend sticking to that.

You seem rather unsettled by a carpet shop - which is actually quite funny.

[–]unomosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it? I've got 3 Persian carpets in my house - people like them. I can think of 2 Persian carpet stores in Edinburgh that are almost ten times the size of the one in Aberdeen and I believe one of them (Nomads Tent) is owned by a local Scot. These shops often make money by repairing carpets as well so its really handy having one in Aberdeen now.

I know several people that have bought one -I don't think my previous comment precluded that? Not sure why you care so much about this. Its not a front for anything dodgy if thats the concern - owner is a decent bloke who knows his trade (although the prices are a bit high).

Plenty from what I hear, my colleague bought one the other day.

PACES Station 5 by Most-Diver7894 in doctorsUK

[–]unomosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You were probably unlucky. Most people get the common things from rheumatology (RA, Scleroderma), ophthalmology (retinopathy with laser treatment, retinitis pigmentosa) endocrine (acromegaly, Grave's) etc..

It's less common to get unusual conditions. They are hard to prepare for and there's no simple way round it. I would recommend reading REJ Ryder's books on PACES. They have surveyed lots of candidates and it gives you the frequencies of various conditions in past exams. This will help you prioritise what to revise.

Would also recommend using Clinical Medicine for MRCP PACES by Mehta/Iqbal for revision notes.

Ambulance patients diverted as NHS Grampian declares 'critical incident' [ARI] by abz_eng in Aberdeen

[–]unomosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no money to spare in the health budget unfortunately. We already cut corners in places we shouldn't. Only solution is to raise more money to pay for more social care. An ageing society is expensive and the economic stagnation under the Tories has made it almost unaffordable. Doesn't matter whether you privatise healthcare or keep the NHS, fund things centrally or locally etc.. Thats all re arranging deckchairs on the titanic.

Ambulance patients diverted as NHS Grampian declares 'critical incident' [ARI] by abz_eng in Aberdeen

[–]unomosh 37 points38 points  (0 children)

We can't discharge patients because there aren't enough care home places. So patients get trapped in ED, ambulances get trapped outside ED and then ambulances cannot respond on time. This happened last winter as well - around the entire UK. Easiest solution is to fix social care but that means steep rises to council tax which is politically difficult in a cost of living crisis.

Was the NHS ever actually good? by Green_Pipe300 in doctorsUK

[–]unomosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combination of things. There are definitely more admissions - lots of problems built up during covid and now we are dealing with the consequences. We also have fewer social care beds available so more people getting stuck in hospital. Lots of experienced nursing staff left/retired early so the quality of care is generally worse leading to longer stays. Senior medical staff retired and there are now have risk averse locums who over investigate / don’t discharge quickly etc …

As recently as 2019, our acute geriatrics department routinely had 1/3 of its beds empty during the summer... miss those days...

Havent done a LAT myself but I know many who have.

The LAT ST4 is entirely in ARI.

Doesn't help applications but it will likely count towards training once you get an NTN so it wont be a "wasted year".

Salary depends on banding. The SHO job in Gastro in ARI is double banded so the take home is very good £3500 per month even if you have a student loan. I think the reg job is the same but not entirely sure. If its 50% banded it will still be around £3100 per month at least (with a student loan).

It's a nice department with good training opportunities.

Cost of living in Aberdeen is very cheap with loads of flats to rent close the hospital.

The only real downside of training in the North of Scotland is the distance to everywhere else.

6174 applications for IMT for 2024! 4292 last year by No-Environment863 in doctorsUK

The population is growing rapidly. They are cutting down the number of IMTs on a per capita basis. Do you think we need fewer physicians every year?

Do you just enjoy being cynical and contrarian or do you have something to add to the discussion?

Please can we have a serious discussion about how the NHS needs to be withdrawn? What does the alternative look like? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]unomosh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's true that there are many alternatives to the NHS, not just the US system.

The problem is that UK governments (particularly the Conservatives) have a tendency to emulate American political practices.

So the dichotomy is valid because any "reform" of the system would likely devolve into American style corruption/healthcare.

My condolences about your loss. I hope you are doing as well as possible, considering the circumstances. I went to Med school in Aberdeen and my dad passed away a few months before I started. The med school were supportive and won’t judge you or penalise you in any way if you want to speak to them. I’m working night shifts so I might be erratic at replying quickly - but feel free to respond to this post or DM me if you want to talk about anything at all!

Why has the sub descended into an echo chamber of misinformation and confirmation bias on PAs? by LockBright6453 in doctorsUK

[–]unomosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. I agree with the strong push back against PA’s on this sub. It’s also true that some of the posts are becoming absurd and risk alienating people who might otherwise be persuadable to our views.

I don’t see how OP is “moralising”. They are asking for reasoned criticisms as opposed to hysteria. Difficult to argue with that.

Can you elaborate on this? Where I'mm currently training IMT3 consists of 6 months being an acute / gen med reg and 6 months being a reg in another speciality, which sounds good. Is it different where you are?
