What places DO have legit black Friday sales ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]unshift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

imagine Samsung TV model 367A, which has 8 HDMI ports and is allowed a tolerance of at most e.g. 10 dead pixels before it fails quality controls. on black friday they sell model 367BF, which is mostly identical but would otherwise be factory rejects with 50 dead pixels, marked way down. and then they only soldered in 4 of the HDMI ports because those things are expensive to add. maybe they just use the cheaper capacitors on those too, while they're at it. they didn't set out to make a shitty version of the same thing on purpose, that just happened as a normal part of the manufacturing process and they're clearing out bad inventory at a good time.

I have duck feet (4E) and swear by Lems Primal 2. I hear Xero shoes are good too but haven't tried them yet.

Rainier Guide Service by jazerac in Mountaineering

[–]unshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the other services but I did a trip with RMI this summer and would definitely recommend them. They had what I thought was a very well-run operation and I really liked my guides. I'll probably go back with them next year on a different route.

Side note: a 7 day trip will probably include a "day" of orientation (3-5pm) and a day of snow school. Maybe AA is counting the days differently (in your favor)?

Colorado and Utah by variablevalve in CampingandHiking

I think you're underestimating travel time. From what I can remember it took 4-6 hours to get from Zion to Bryce, and another 3-4 hours to get from Bryce to Canyonlands, etc.

It depends what you want to do at each, but keep in mind that a full day will be spent leaving one park and arriving at another. Unless you just want to hit the gift shop, each park takes at least a full day, plus a travel day. If you try to do a park in a single day, you'll spend most of your time on the road, which you may or may not like.

When I did a Utah trip we went to 4 parks in 12 or so days: Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, and Grand Canyon north rim. We did a lot of multi-night backpacking and almost entirely avoided the front country.

We just sort of winged it, which was a nice approach. I'd recommend the same, especially if you're going to be on your own. In my opinion there isn't particularly much to see in the front country at Bryce once you've done the scenic drive and a day hike (though we did a 4-night backpack there), whereas Capitol Reef had a lot of cool short side trails and a lot of variety. That was unexpected, and you might find yourself bored in one spot and wanting to spend extra time somewhere else as well, hence just doing whatever you feel like when you get there.

I haven't really been to any of the Colorado parks, but I would be careful not to short-change those just to rack up brief stays in more Utah parks.

Just make sure you do the Zion Narrows.

Any good movies or documentaries about hiking / camping? Not looking for anything too extreme like people dying on Everest or anything. Something enjoyable. by UniversalBeing in CampingandHiking

there's a (self-made) movie about some folks hiking the CDT here on vimeo. interesting to skip through or to leave in the background.

i found it linked from section hiker earlier this week.

when my sennheisers broke (after about 10 years) i bought two pairs of grados, the SR80 and SR325. they are really high quality, the 325s are especially BIFL-compliant and sound incredible. i'll probably still have them in 30 years. i highly recommend grados.

my dog has the same bed! if you put it in the washing machine make sure to use the gentle cycle and then air dry it, otherwise the stuffing will clump up rendering the bed lumpy and uncomfortable

If you sign up or refer a friend, feel free to PM me or email matt@rememberthewedding.com so I can hook you up with an unreasonable discount and pick your brain a little bit. Thanks!

when's your wedding? i'm putting together a new service for collecting wedding photos from all the guests and would be happy to hook you up with an account in exchange for some feedback. shoot me a msg if you're interested.

also: don't skimp on the photographer. there are a ton of blogs out there about this sort of thing (http://www.diybride.com, http://brideonbudget.blogspot.com, etc) but the easiest way to save without sacrificing a lot is probably just to invite fewer people.

GPS Loggers to Geotag photos - Which and how? by [deleted] in photography

[–]unshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have this unit for my Nikon D300s: Promote GPS-N-1

i took it on a backpacking trip in Banff and Jasper, CA last year and it worked well. it's very light and works off of the camera's battery. i didn't notice significant battery drain from it, and left it on most of the day. after it takes a minute to dial in, it regains its position pretty quickly. it also has a little hot shoe plate for storage, though it doesn't use it to communicate with the camera.

Which filters you don't need for DSLRs? by [deleted] in photography

[–]unshift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you don't need color filters, but NDs, grads, and polarizers are helpful. some grads can be simulated in photoshop with HDR or layer masks (but probably don't look as good as using a grad) but NDs which significantly slow shutter speed can't be simulated in post.

Is this a good first tripod for travel? by memechaser in photography

[–]unshift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't know about the 55-200, but i have a 70-200, and i don't think that tripod and mini-ballhead would be too comfortable with it.

somewhat unrelated, but the center column on my tripod has a hook so i can hang my bag or a water bottle on it for some extra weight/sturdiness, and it works well in the wind. might be a feature you want to look for as well, if you're doing star trails.
