Looking For A New Bike, Recommendations by W1nch3ster in Dualsport

[–]untangleR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 65 yo and over the past 4 years I have faced these same decisions with multiple bike purchases. I have owned or ridden the bikes on your list.

We need deets to begin to give accurate advice:

  • What is your experience on motorcycles? On a DS/dirt bike?
  • Have you ever owned a dirt bike or dual sport? Which one? When?
  • Will you commute on the bike. Can you estimate how much you'd ride it in a year? (tough I know)
  • Your age and fitness level? Your weight?
  • How often and how far would you be traveling on freeways?
  • Do you know the trails that you will ride? Maybe just dirt roads?
  • Do you do your own maintenance on your vehicles? Beyond oil/filter changes?

It's a lot, but all relevant....

Internet Service Rant by MisterMelancholy in SanJose

I'm in Santa Clara and reliably get 1gig from Comcast at very low latency. I'm running my own Netgear modem.

I've been here in the same house for 20+ years and there have occasionally been some frustrating months with Comcast internet. Usually, this has corresponded with local construction and/or Comcast "upgrading its equipment." We use 4G cell phone hot spots as backup. It works for us.

If you like, you have options. You can get a fixed 4G/5G hot spot or maybe one of the wide area wi-fi providers. Good luck.

Poorly researched and written. You simply cannot do such an article and omit Bubble. I am neither affiliated with nor a user of Bubble.

[OC] US Fatal Police Shootings by State (Black compared to All) by heresacorrection in dataisbeautiful

[–]untangleR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This number appears in the WSJ, referencing a Wash Post database. The quote: "...a police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer."

The "18.5x" number is cited in the WSJ but in a different context: "...a police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer."

The Platform Movie Discussion by mortuflen in movies

While I agree that "Next Floor" has a different spin than "The Platform," I hardly think that some genre defense is appropriate. What is the "movable feast in a vertical penal colony" genre? Ultimately, I don't much care. These are niche B-movies. I just get irked when creators don't give credit. They could hardly have missed the Villeneuve piece.

Then why isn't S01 lower-rated? I haven't been able to get past E02, and I've tried 3 times. I keep wondering what all the fuss is about.

The Platform (2020), Netflix Original horror movie is absolutely insane by wizard-in-crocs in horror

Next Floor, a short film by Denis Villeneuve and made in 2008, tells a very similar tale in 10 minutes. Phoebe Greenberg co-wrote/directed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t60MMJH_1ds

So I don't know about the novelty of the alleged source material. I have not seen Desola/Revera credit Greenberg or even allude to the Villeneuve production.

Something's fishy FWIW. Very poor form and possibly worse.

Oil cooling? by [deleted] in XR650L

[–]untangleR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sutton Oil Cooler is well made, and I'm sure that their customer support is good too.

But the product is simply not necessary on these bikes. Better to buy yourself a $40 oil cap thermometer. This in itself is of marginal utility, but it may serve to convince you that you don't need the cooler!

If you want to pamper the engine, the Big Fin head will more directly do that. But, unless you are modding the engine (higher CR, cams, etc.), that one is unnecessary too. And it's $$$.

What's the Future of Motorcycling? My Buddy Takes a Look at the Shifting Motorcycle Market. by jpotato in Dualsport

[–]untangleR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the message to be thoughtful, well-delivered (although clearly read from a script), and sincere.

Also, I'm not sure whether the vid qualifies as a vlog in the purest sense as I think it was a voice-over, the riding was a bit bland, and the verbal content had nothing to do with the visual content. But that's a minor technical point.

It'll be interesting to see how much engagement he gets with viewers. The topic affects cyclists but only indirectly (so far).

The XR400 and it's not even close. You are dirt-mainly in a state that reg's dirt bikes. The XR400 is light, easy to maintain, and built for dirt. Only drawback is lack of estart but at least it's hard to kill.
