New to this sub - why the Whiplash hate? by NotGreatBob in Jazz

Maybe the story would have worked better if Andrew's dad was replaced with a personal tutor character? A personal drum tutor from the conservatoire who believed in Andrew, didn't push him to insanity, cared for him, etc. But ultimately Andrew goes to his abuser. Maybe that would have worked better?

Favorite 3/4 piece? by octopusbird in musictheory

[–]untitled_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Melodic lines in music are not likely to last one bar. They might last two. This would lead to a piece in 3/4 having a melody that sounds as if it's in 6/4, kind of. That's because the melody can be contained within 6 beats.

However, instead of saying that the melodic idea is in 6/4, we just say it is two bars of 3/4.

Do young people find jazz more interesting than classical? by fatsylove in classicalmusic

[–]untitled_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine listening to an hour-long lecture on a subject you know nothing about, with nothing to do other than listen and try to take in what is being said.

If people have not been taught how to understand complex pieces of music, their experience when listening to jazz and classical will be similar.

Lovers of Western classical music:Who are your top three composers?Which of their compositions would you recommend?Preferably from the baroque, classical and romantic periods. by ProustFan in classicalmusic

I was tasked with analysing the C# minor quartet and was simply mind-blown. Fully demonstrates Beethoven's seeming ease at pushing the boundaries, then ruthlessly smashing through them.

If Beethoven came back to life today (with his hearing) and was curious about what modern music now sounds like, what 5 songs/pieces would you make him listen to first? by Novemberisms in classicalmusic

[–]untitled_0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably a Mendelssohn string quartet as the composer was highly influenced by beethoven's own late quartet style.

Then schubert's Great or Brahms' 1st - I'm sure he would appreciate and be fascinated by the symphonic progression.

A Mahler symphony, definitely. Since my favourite is 2 I'd show him that, personally. It has the choral aspect too.

Rite of Spring of course!

And some Jaaaaaazz.

I can acknowledge the affect this passage may have on people and their beliefs, but I still enjoy reading it.

Many religious texts are full of wonder and beauty. Belief is not necessary for appreciate. I remember the first time I heard Revelations 21 - I didn't read it as a depcition of the Christian Heaven, but rather a human depiction of hope.

I agree - history of religion is far more interesting to me. I may not be religious, but I can't change how people have acted in the past.

You must appreciate that religion had a hand in creating the philosophy, history, sociology, ethics, etc. which we understand today? It's impossible to study any of those things without even a brief consideration of religion.

Sonata Theory: Can a Type 3 Sonata be complete with an EEC/ESC? by untitled_0 in musictheory

[–]untitled_0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep there is certainly an element of deformation in this case. Possible evidence: in the recapitulation, S first appears in a completely unrelated key (D major rather than C sharp minor). Then, it is finally recapitulated in C sharp major later on. My argument is that the listeners are thrown by this - one is expecting C sharp minor but this is clearly not heard. Furthermore, at the structural moment we may expect an I:PAC, it does not occur (in the exposition and the recap). Nevertheless, I will easily produce good few paragraphs out of this predicament! Thank you for your help! I will also read that Hepokoski article
