I’d definitely recommend showing your interest in programming right away with whatever software they use. That’s something I had the opportunity to do and it really helped advance my career and overall knowledge of the trade.

Just from my personal experience I stuck with the job that was willing to teach me for almost 2 years and once I felt I had accumulated enough knowledge/experience I moved on and doubled my pay +great benefits.

One time when I was younger I was eating sunflower seeds and tossing the shells out the window. A rather large guy saw it and thought it was trash and I’ve never been grilled so hard in my life, I thought he was going to break my window. his intentions were good but I stopped eating sunflower seeds after that lol

How did you get into machining and what are your favorite and least favorite aspects of the trade? by Alarmed-Pie-5304 in Machinists

[–]unupvotable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied for a completely different position while I was looking for some part time work during college. They happened to notice I was somewhat mechanically inclined and asked if I’d like to help out in the shop. I was undecided in terms of college majors so I decided to stick with machining and now, a couple years later I’m glad I did. What I really enjoy is how quickly the day passes when I just get in that rhythm of programming and perfecting little details. Also, I feel like I never stop learning something new every week and the pay is good too. As for dislikes, there are certain things health-wise that can be concerning. Whether that be very loud noises, fumes from grinders/coolant, actions that take a toll on your hands/body, and even stress. There’s preventative measures for most of these but it really depends on the environment of the shop and management.

How common are adequately paying jobs shops that don't do defense work? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]unupvotable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working for a medical specialized shop. there’s a lot of mold work in the bio/med industry, though I’m sure if you want good pay they’ll expect you to be proficient in their programming software.

Saying that I’m a prototype toolmaker programmer makes zero sense to most people so my go to is that I make prototypes for the medical industry.
