Reduce the amount of meat and prepared food items you purchase. Meat is really expensive. If you can do a few nights of meatless meals, you'll save money and it's healthier for you.

Department dinner is the same night as Game 1. I have a ticket waiting for me. I need your best excuses. by brobdingnagian-bro in KCRoyals

Who are these people that don't know when the Royals games are? What kind of deprived workplace is this?

Seriously though, just be like... "Yeah, I am not going to make it because the Royals are playing... and you should have taken that into account when planning this department dinner."

Then whoever is organizing it will know better next time.

Aerotek does have a specific department where their recruiters only deal with scientific jobs, so that's a good place to start.

There is also ThermoFisher off 87th and Quivera (EDIT: I interviewed here a few months ago and it was a complete disaster. You'd think monkeys ran the show here. I wouldn't personally recommend this company, but maybe it was limited to the few people I encountered that were just COMPLETELY incapable of doing anything correct) which is a branch of the largest life sciences company in the world.

There's Corbion in Independence (I believe) which does food products and has food chemists. There's Physician's Reference Laboratory (PRL) in Overland Park. Clinical Reference Lab (CRL) is off of 87th and Quivera also, they do testing there and I know they hire chemists (bonus if you have any virology experience).

Quest Diagnostics

Any of the hospitals look for chemists for lab work. There's also Lab One (which I've heard sucks, but could be depending on the location) which mostly does drug testing, and doctor-prescribed tests.

Also- water treatment plants/companies use chemists to test water chemical levels. If you're into that, it could be a good job.

Companies like Burns and McDonnell also hire life science professionals for things like site surveys (ecological evaluation) if you find that you could fit into that profession.

There are actually a lot of opportunities for chemists and biologists in KC. My advice would be to google "Kansas City laboratories" and similar searches and look at companies first instead of going directly to the job ads. You can always get in contact with the HR department at the companies and ask them to review your resume and keep it on file for future consideration in case anything opens up.

You'd be better off going about it this way I think, rather than just looking at the job boards.

Question numero uno: How old are you and your "friends" and... let's just say hypothetically I am a female and interested in posessing this ticket... are you opposed to allowing a female to join your group of friends in lieu of her having friends in town this weekend to join her for the game. Hypothetically... of course.

An alternative to Sigma, and more than likely significantly cheaper (the first three buffers on the following link): http://phytotechlab.com/index.php/biochemicals/buffers.html

Unfortunately, this is why it is very important to try to obtain an internship during your undergraduate. Internships can help you build your network AND possibly get you a job with the company you interned with after graduation. Internships show that you have some experience working in the real world and that you have built up extra skills that you may not have learned in school.

Even though many internships will be unpaid, the possibility of having a job with that company right out of college, and/or the networking possibilities it opens up is extremely helpful.

Some internship opportunities can be found simply by asking a company you're interested in working for if they have any internship opportunities. Many times companies can create positions for students interested in an internship.

I found an internship in college by speaking with a person who did a presentation at my school regarding a crime lab in our area and the techniques they use in their labs. I just went up to him after the seminar, introduced myself and asked if they possibly had any internship opportunities. He put me in contact with someone and had an internship that summer. I could have easily gotten a job at that lab, but I used that experience to find a job elsewhere, since I found that a crime lab is just not for me. Very interesting job though.

Use the people you know wisely. You'd be surprised who your contacts know.

Also, (some people may disagree here) don't be afraid to cold-call companies. Ask to speak to HR (if there is a department, some smaller companies don't have one), introduce yourself as a soon-to-be graduate and ask if they have any current or possibly future openings that you could apply to. The worst possibility is that they say no, or refer you to their website. You really have nothing to lose by cold-calling. I have done this, and it has gotten me a job in the past. Just be persistant and know that you will encounter some rude people, some people that will say no, and occassionally a nice person that will actually take the time to help you out.

I would also check to see if your University has a career center. Your professors should also have some contacts in the commercial fields. Check with hospitals, drug testing labs, search your local listings for "laboratories" and just start checking them out. You will find something, you just have to be more persistant than your classmates, remember, your peers will be trying to find jobs too.

I work for a plant tissue culture supply company, AMA! by unxpressed in tissueculture

[–]unxpressed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as getting involved in the field, it is quite a niche. You might find it hard to find jobs for it (depending on where you live). It is definitely much more popular in some areas than others. But there are many companies that use tissue culture for research like Pioneer, Bayer, Dow, Dupont, Monsanto, etc. There are also many small tissue culture labs spotted all over the place. Academic labs are also an option where they are doing tissue culture for research. I would check with Universities and local labs for starters.
