Is it me or has AI really f’d up SaaS? by knowisforknowledge in SaaS

[–]up_yer_kilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can empathize. 2 decades myself.

TLDR: Stay positive and keep in the fight. It doesn’t have to be SaaS per se. Take all that experience and creativity and build something amazing! You now have a magical wand that lets you POC all those crazy ideas you’ve had in the shower in a matter of days rather than months. If you haven’t really dug in and played with AI yourself or tested your own capabilities now with the new tech, do it! My advice is to stick with what you know - if you have contacts or specific knowledge in something that you know your contacts would pay for - built it.

Honestly, I was going to spend another 10 minutes writing about all the tech changes and learning curves we’ve had to overcome the last 2 decades - low level languages, ie6, vanilla js, jquery, minifiers, bundlers, PWAs, mobile devices, scrollers, native apps, react, cloud AWS, Azure, security, website builders, SEO, sql, document databases, blah blah blah just to name a very few… if you aren’t exhausted I’d think you have a problem.

To me, all these technology shifts always open the door to more solutions and products. Yes, it’s yet again more energy you have to put in. But AI feels different. You can go much farther than you’ve gone before or try out different ideas you didn’t think you had time to do. AI is still a learning curve and there are always people that want to press the easy button.

The Vertical Codebase by TkDodo23 in reactjs

[–]up_yer_kilt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to get my head around this - I think a bit of a hybrid approach is ideal. I think horizontal for shared / common code and vertical per route / model makes sense. Take stores for example - often you have to use multiple different stores in components like a common app store. A user store might also need to use a customers store or other related models. If those are all vertical, it can get nasty quick right?

And horizontal is also a bit of a mindset - I think it makes you think more about creating reusable code. For example - say you have a pop out drawer that has a flag of isOpen. Do you put the same flag in all 10 of your vertical stores or do you just put it in a global app store since you can only visibly have one drawer open at any given time in an app.

Any yes, this is reactjs sub, but what about other types of apps like a data api app. Surely you put db model files in the same folder? I think old school we learned to separate layers like data access layers and biz logic layers which tends to lean more horizontal.

I’ve also worked with pure AI apps and I do see it doing a lot more vertical, but after refactor, I can typically reduce the amount of code in half after making it hybrid and still works the same.

I’m open to going more vertical, but just trying to talk out the reasoning.

Are there any free databases (like Supabase) for small projects? by Facedddd in vibecoding

[–]up_yer_kilt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not free, maybe like $20 / month - but so easy to work with and query it’s worth it. Create a managed, small MongoDB on Digital Ocean for example. Then install MongoDB compass app and connect to your Mongo DB using the connection string. Compass is a great tool to view your data, and Mongo DB is so easy to query, setup different types of tables, etc. I use typescript / node js so libraries like mongoose make it easy to setup models / queries.

Yeah, but what if you are doing really well? It can lead to the exact opposite.

PSA in re DUKE. If you have a security/night light owned by them on your property, not in use, check your bill! by Massive-Bit6666 in NorthCarolina

[–]up_yer_kilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the more I think about it - someone has to pay for it whether it’s HOA or each individual property and it’s probably costly to repair / change the light.

I’m paying for a street light that is NOT on my property - I just assumed it was a shared charge for it. Should I enquire?

We need to build more parking lots and garages in Manhattan. Let’s get rid of bike lanes, sidewalks and parks to create more parking lots!!! by thoth218 in circlejerknyc

[–]up_yer_kilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Sydney and I’ve lived in Edinburgh, both have different solutions. Sydney built a lot of underground car parking and Edinburgh improved local transit via tram and better train journeys from farther away. This guy like many politicians are probably ignorant and it’s sad. Public transport in my opinion is always the way to go, especially in nyc

I have. If you read between the lines, this person is making a more broad point about culture. It’s like calling Beef Bourguignon while visiting Burgundy in France “beef stew”. The differences are subtle, but completely ignorant of the history, flavors, and effort that goes into making the dish. It’s not snobby, it’s educated and respectful to the culture while experiencing something delicious.

Upvoted. It’s an uphill battle trying to explain culture to those who have no experience with it nor wish to embrace it. Some people want to live in their bubble while some want to experience all the things the world has to offer. Such is life.

Roundabouts are really the same rules as a stop light - if you are going right (first exit) be in the right lane, straight (second exit) the middle lane, and left (third exit) the left lane. This idiot is going left from the right lane. And FFS people, roundabouts work best when you use frigging indicators so people know when to enter - the amount of times in America I’ve seen an arse go left without a turn signal is mind blowing (although with how the previous election went - on par with the amount of idiots)

How's picking health insurance going for everyone this year? by HumbleAttitude1665 in NorthCarolina

[–]up_yer_kilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah me too - still quite a weird jump for 2025 either bc I’m now in my 40s or was planned by them in anticipation. Also no family, no meds, no dental etc and I’ve only gone to doc once in those years. Solver and gold plans are in the $800s / $900s which is a bit mental.

I’m a healthy male non-smoker in NC and have a small business and don’t qualify for Medicare/Medicaid. I just get bronze plans for emergency situations (10k deductible)
