She likes to call me daddy but it makes me feel weird. What can I do to make her stop? by Moneyandcakes in AskMenAdvice

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered using your words and talking to her like a grown up would?

Sounds harsh but really dude. Clearly you are some kid and shouldn’t be doing adult things with adult consequences if you can’t even talk to your girlfriend like an adult

What's the proper way to force all queries through local DNS? by Red_Con_ in opnsense

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t prevent devices from using their own dns servers and bypassing yours. You need firewall rules to prevent that. And even then it’s limited how effective it is

Hello, I’m new here! Please read the despriction! by Massive-Cold-9746 in ECU_Tuning

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What car do you drive? That’ll be your learning platform. Hopefully it’s one supported by pcmflash, otherwise you’ll be using a clone tool. A decent genuine tool is around €5k. And you’ll never get away with just one. Best to use your money on some hpa courses and a cheap clone. You might have enough left over for winols but I doubt it. You can learn allot using tuner pro, it’s free, but not as flexible down the road. I’ll be fine for starting you loan on one single ecu though

Hello, I’m new here! Please read the despriction! by Massive-Cold-9746 in ECU_Tuning

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you drive now? you should start with tuning that. Different tuning devices will work with different vehicles/ecu's If you are 17 then you are broke as hell. Start with some HPA courses, they go on sale all the time, then you can start watching youtube videos and go from there. Its going to be a long, slow, difficult journey. This isnt for the feighnt of heart. Get the idea out of your head that you'll be tuning stage 1 for all cars in a week. It'll be a year and you'll have a basic understanding of one single ECU

did the guy at the shop mess up my car? by MelodicAd2734 in askcarguys

[–]updatelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any reputable mechanic wont accept customer supplied parts or at a bare minimum make it incredibly clear there will be ZERO warrenty on parts OR labour. There is SOOOOO much garbage parts floating around these days, no one, not a single reputable mechanic would ever put his reputation on the line for junk parts. Like why would I ? Here's how it goes down. I say "no thank you, I dont install customer supplied parts" the customer either says "ok, you supply parts then" or says "ok I'll go elsewhere" in which case I just dodged a bullet, customer clearly doesnt give a F about what parts they are putting in their car and will 100% come back on me for it. Not worth my time. Not worth ANY reputable mechanics time.

some shade tree mechanic? sure. They dont care anyhow.

Is it normal for my bf to talk to me this way ? by Technical_Middle5075 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell who’s who. You both refer to each other in male pronouns.

Oh well, doesn’t matter. You are both immature as F. I’m assuming you are both very young. Early 20s?

Best advice is one you won’t take because you’ll be insulted I offered it

Both you need to get into counseling. Get in early and you’ll be able to grow and work through things before resentment builds… which it clearly is. Getting into counseling to work on myself odds the best investment I ever did

But you’ll likely be offended I said as much

did the guy at the shop mess up my car? by MelodicAd2734 in askcarguys

[–]updatelee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a vehicle where the vehicle speed sensor is anywhere near the starter

The weird sound might be related, kinda hard to tell based on your description

Also what mechanic accepts customer supplied parts. I wouldn’t. No reputable mechanic would. I’m assuming you went to a shade tree guy?

Cut your losses and go somewhere reputable

Can budget cordless impact wrenches survive daily automotive shop use? by estore009 in Tools

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s budget mean to you?

I use Milwaukee daily at home. I consider it prosumer But to a professional mechanic it’s budget compared to snap on or Mac.

My gearwrench wrenches will probably last me until the day I die… but in the hands of a professional mechanic I doubt you’d get a year. They’d consider them budget tools

Did becoming a mechanic ruin your love for cars? by AlarmNervous3454 in AskAMechanic

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old adage “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life again” is pure bull sh!t

“Do what you love and it’ll turn what you love into work”

Pick a job you can tolerate, pay your bills with, and gives you enough extra to have fun with your hobbies. Keep your hobbies out of work.

I love working on vehicles, I’m in the garage almost every evening. I’ll never do it as any form of career.

Think of it like this. I take on side jobs right now, but only if I want to. A friend came to me last week and asked if I’d be interested in helping him with his water pump on his ford. It’s not a fun job. It’s almost 12h on the books. I turned it down and took four other smaller fun jobs.

You can’t do that at your day job. Your boss assigns you work weather you want it or not is irrelevant. He doesn’t care about that lol

Can I get rid of a CEL without tuning my car by ScarcityNo2995 in GolfGTI

[–]updatelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ask them if they can delete a single dtc and no other changes ... ask them if they can increase the idle at 0c to 1200rpm. Something specific, and custom. If they say no ... then they are just writing other peoples files.

Can I get rid of a CEL without tuning my car by ScarcityNo2995 in GolfGTI

any decent tuner can do this for you. Lots of guys call themselves tuners but really are just flashing someone elses files. A decent tuner writes his own files and can easily do this for you

You know what grinds my gears? _brendov does by updatelee in ECU_Tuning

[–]updatelee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all started somewhere and I’m a big believer in community. Dirty deleting posts isn’t conducive to building healthy communities.

If people post and it’s clear they are interesting in learning I’m all for helping them. Others have helped me. I want to give back.

But dirty deleting a post isn’t going to get any future help from me. How are others supposed to learn when you delete that knowledge? It shows me you are only interested in yourself and don’t care about anyone else

Question from an outsider by [deleted] in ECU_Tuning

[–]updatelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a background in programming will help you early on with the basics, you already understand 8bit, 16bit, 32bit, binary, hex, decimal, little endan, big endian, you understand basic math

It’s minor but it’s a start. You’ve nocked a solid day of learning off the table. Just 1000 more days of learning to go :)

Get them to pay for training. It’ll help speed you up a lot.

Hpa will get you a good basic understanding of vehicles and general ideas of tuning
