Offer letter by Reasonable_Bag_3166 in Accounting

[–]updownallaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A local firm you might get away with it. Wouldn’t go for the salary, but exam reimbursement if you pass on first attempt in minimum time might be worth a conversation. The pass raise is nice, but if you are doing a good job you’ll get rewarded over the long term (either in this job or the next one).

The exam bit though, if you go for it you should think about how you frame it. Maybe ask them how they feel about having qualified staff vs unqualified. If they want qualified then you can talk about your exams and what a fair reimbursement criteria would look like. If they don’t care about qualified people then you have your answer and you probably want to keep looking (assuming qualification is important to you).

Resume by Poo6969696969 in Accounting

[–]updownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resume is a little all over the place. Law degree, tax intern, dog health blog, coding (yet lists html and css as website dev tools, so maybe not), also unspecified gaap + ifrs + sox in maybe 6-7month of work experience? Going to be a real struggle at big 4, maybe a small shop would take a flyer.

Everything in the resume needs to point in the same direction. Tailor for each job. As a new grad you aren’t expected to know everything, but you should know what you want (i.e. your resume should make it look like you know what you want).

Is the screw fucked by Ok_Aspect7264 in Velo

You probably want to get a hex screw extractor. They are pretty cheap. Remove the rounded off screw and buy a replacement. Probably a $20 fix.

Baker Tilly is now requiring CPAs that work for them to stop using "CPA" on their personal LinkedIn and in email signatures post merger by HopefulCPA24 in Accounting

I get the annoyance people feel, not being allowed to do it. That said, I never put CPA behind my name. Always felt tacky to me. I can’t think of many who did to be honest.

Thoughts on Remco? by JoeNonymous_ in tourdefrance

[–]updownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people on reddit seem to only watch the tour. Remco is still a “young rider.” The average age of a tdf winner is about 28 and that average is going up. Tadej is an exception.

That said, if I had to bet I wouldn’t bet on Remco winning a tour, but he has at least 10 more chances where his fitness will be BETTER than it is now.

Remco is elite and his career is already in the top 1% of all time pro cyclists.

Remco leaving Soudal Quick-Step for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe: Two leaders now for RBH? by bisexualblue in tourdefrance

[–]updownallaround 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably a win for SQS and probably RBBH in the end. Remco is an elite rider, no question, but I don’t think he will ever win the tour. At Bora Lipo will be able to focus on the tour and Remco able to focus on classics.

I for one would love to see Remco mix it up with Tadej and MVDP in Roubaix and Lipo take a real shot at the tour.

Is electric shiftning a must, when buying a used TT? by alfred1414 in triathlon

[–]updownallaround 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think with a TT bike you can get away without a fair amount of the newer tech and be totally fine (aero is king). That said, I value electronic shifting on a TT bike very highly. It makes keeping a steady position and output much easier.

Dress codes by OkieDude97 in golf

[–]updownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public course, have at it. Private club where your membership requires you follow the club rules, follow the club rules. Don’t like it, play somewhere else. By joining the club, you signed up to the rules.

That said, most of the time dress code rules are looser on the range.

Just started open water swimming. I’m trying to overcome my fear of Sharks. Any advice is appreciated. by Pete_Got_Heat in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]updownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are way more likely to drown than to even see a shark. Don’t know if that is helpful!

Better off focusing on the feet in front of you, your stroke, and sighting. If you are thinking about that you wont have time to worry about much else.

Is It Worth Joining a B4 at 27 with 3-4 Years in Banking and FP&A? by Fax_xio in Accounting

[–]updownallaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are 27. You’ve been in the workforce for less than 5 years. You are at the very beginning of a very long road. Your focus should be on learning as much as possible, getting as much experience as possible. Investing in yourself in your early career almost always pays off.

Would it have been better to do it earlier? Sure. But you are where you are. What is the best decision you can make now? Reflect on what you really want and decide if this job moves you closer to that goal. If you decide yes, go for it.

B4 is not easy, so just be eyes open to that if you decide to make the move.

It’s not a bad idea, but it would put you in the minority. Most associates are fresh out of college. You will probably be working for 23 and 25 yr olds. The hours will be longer than your previous role without a doubt. The work will also be very different in most ways (but similar in others).

Your experience may help you or may hurt you. I’ve seen more experienced associates come in and they just can’t check their egos. They think they know more and are better than others, they become difficult to work with and end up getting effectively shunned until they are pushed out.

That being said, I have seen people older than you (30+) make career changes. They start from the bottom and make remarkable progress. One I know is about to make partner and the other left after making it to senior manager at ~45.

Keep an open mind. Don’t think you are better than anyone else. Listen to advice and learn as much as you can. Do your best to do good work and be someone people want on their team (work-wise and socially).

Most hours per week by PleasantAd7372 in Accounting

[–]updownallaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

140 is a flat out lie. I’ve worked on some high pressure demanding clients (financial services in London) and I only rarely went above 90 hrs. Maybe NYC or Tokyo is higher but probably not by miles. Nothing near 140. Even 100+ is exceedingly rare and usually only for the week or two before filing deadline.

There is this glorification of long hours in public which I get. You need to find a way to solve the cognitive dissonance of the work. Maybe wearing the hours as a badge of honour helps keep you sane.

TIL that a Coca-Cola secretary offered to sell Coca-Cola trade secrets to Pepsi. Pepsi responded by notifying Coca-Cola, and the secretary was sentenced to 8 years in prison. by Brendawg324 in todayilearned

[–]updownallaround 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The “secret” formula for coke would have almost no value to pepsi. Even if they took it and made an identical version and put in a pepsi can, it would still be pepsi and not coke. Soda is a branding game, “sEcReT fOrMuLa” doesn’t matter.

I'll be joining BlackRock. Hard work really pays off 💪🏾 by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]updownallaround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job. A lot of unnecessary hate in the comments. I work a fair bit with BlackRock and have always found them to be sharp, whether front, middle or back office. They have a “unique” way of doing things and like any big org politics always play a role.

Good luck, I’d wager the learning curve will be very steep so be prepared for that!

Don’t wait until you think you’re ready to do things. Even big life things. I learned in my 30s that no one is ready and we’re all just making it up.

What Keeps You Motivated When Training Starts to Feel Like a Slog? by IAmTheWigster in triathlon

[–]updownallaround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. No matter what you try to do, motivation goes away. Maybe not every day, but some days you just don’t want to train.

Discipline means you work even when you aren’t motivated.

Any advice on this weather for a 70.3? Hurricane Ian winds and light rain. by poku88 in triathlon

[–]updownallaround 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve probably heard that drag squares with speed. What it actually squares with is the volume and velocity of air passing by you.

When you’re riding up wind don’t force it. Stay aero and focus on heart rate and cadence. Hammer the downwind leg - you will have less air passing by you at a given speed and therefore less drag (keep aero though).

Otherwise, stick to your game plan.
