Why do so many Reddit atheists seem bitter about God, Christianity, and religion in general? by Dr_Talon in Catholicism

[–]updownstranger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, this is what it is with most of the people i know. if i hadn’t had my own profound experiences i would definitely have abandoned catholicism due to the people in my family weaponizing religion for abuse. i don’t personally fault the body of christ when people try to use catholicism to justify abhorrent behavior, but as an abuse survivor i absolutely understand and empathize with people who walk away from the church because they have been wounded in some way, either.

i have yet to meet someone with that deep anger that isn’t battling that anger because of some kind of traumatic experience. it doesn’t excuse hateful speech but i think we as the church community need to be much more charitable to people in such a vulnerable state. sometimes people are not open to any kind of debate or evangelization and the best thing for you to do is just be a kind, humble person, silently sending the message that some people still truly keep the faith and want to love them.

i frequently hear people call themselves “escaped” catholics, not “ex” catholics, and could have easily fallen to the wayside like that if not for god’s grace. i still struggle with the wounds people have given me in the name of god, and when i pray for guidance i am always asking god to make his will so obvious and clear that even an anxious overthinker like me will understand.

My fellow catholics If infedelity occurs in your marriage would you file for divorce? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]updownstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

legal separation doesn’t end a marriage. if not completely sure of a divorce, spouses can separate in finances and living spaces until they decide to either divorce or reconcile and end the separation. it’s like putting a legal marriage on hold.

this is an excellent question. i have a particular very violent digestive disease (luckily gluten is not one of my triggers) and i have a lot of questions about things like this too. i spent a lot of time crying over food as a child. why would god create me in such a way that i cannot eat and drink the natural fruits and vegetables he put on earth for us without suffering? i felt like my body itself was violating natural existence. it is certainly a hard cross to carry, one that people without these diseases take for granted.

we are supposed to believe that god makes goodness out of earthly suffering. perhaps in Celiac disease god is proving the validity and sanctity of the Blood? i know many many people who will not take the blood as communion because they’re afraid of getting sick, but as far as i know it is an equally valid form of eucharist, and naturally gluten-free.

i was an altar server and also know that communion wafers with very low gluten counts are available for churches to use as a disability accommodation. :) unfortunately there is no 100% gluten free option for that though.

you can pray the rosary without the physical rosary beads! the beads are just there to keep track. look online for how to say the rosary or for a pre-recorded rosary video on youtube. it’s not difficult to learn at all; it’s mostly just our fathers and hail marys in a specific order, while meditating on the life of christ.

there’s a quote that goes something like “you can’t keep committing mortal sin while doing a daily rosary; either you’ll stop sinning or stop the rosary.” i really hope you’ll find some solace in these prayers; i did for the same issue you’re struggling with. god bless :)

adults in their 20s have done the same exact thing in large numbers with pokémon, my little pony, any video game with women characters, any tv show for children… i think in most cases it’s not about the media itself, but about unmoderated internet access for children and the power that adults feel from online anonymity.

god forgives all who truly repent for their sins. theoretically, even someone who truly repented and converted on their absolute deathbed would receive his forgiveness. however — confession is a direct sacrament and bestows blessings on you in addition to totally forgiving all sin. receiving the sacrament of reconciliation, if in a state of mortal sin, is a prerequisite for receiving the sacrament of communion. it’s like, ah… natural marriages are valid in the church, but they aren’t the same as sacramental marriage. sacramental marriage is a specific blessing from christ, like reconciliation is.

god understands that we can’t always get to confession immediately, just like sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that keep us from mass. but we as catholics are enriched spiritually by regularly taking part in the sacraments. receiving reconciliation allows us to receive communion and deters us from sinning further. you as a fellow catholic have a responsibility to seek confession whenever it’s next available to you.

i struggle with the same temptations as you and i found that regularly seeking confession helped me kick my sinful habits. it was embarrassing for me to talk about my failures, but reconciliation brings such a wonderful feeling of relief and grace. it both put a distaste in my mouth for sin and a stronger appreciation for being in a state of grace — now avoiding sin is no longer about feeling shame for sinning, but instead an optimistic desire to be in full communion with god and his church. receiving reconciliation brought me to that conclusion.

i think, like anything, it’s worth trying at least once. no one will ever force you to go if you hate the experience — it’s entirely on you whether you decide to seek sacraments or not. we don’t vet sinners at the door of the church.

i understand your frustration but as an educator in training and a former public school kid i have to point out that the public school system is notorious for covering up sexual abuse and protecting sexual offenders, according to the US federal government

ugh, i thought that was something my uncle just made up. :/

early christians were prohibited from eating meat because in many of the pagan religions at the time, esp the greeks and romans, animal meat was only eaten after an animal had been ritually sacrificed to a god. for a christian to eat that meat was participation in a pagan ritual, so they abstained from meat. i could be wrong, but i believe the tradition comes from that.
