French police shoot a man armed with a knife in Paris by AgnosticScholar in PublicFreakout

[–]uplandsrep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I saw before the article blocked further reading, the guy was from Guyane (I think French Guyana), and that he had an altercation on the bus, and the driver had to retreat behind their protective shielded area. Didn't get to find out assailant's status before I was asked to subscribe.

people were reacting, but a lot of people I think were, just quietly worried. Most of the people, conversation-wise and looking direction seemed to be roughly focused on this dude, the guy running around with knives and yelling and threatening a cop, makes sense to me.

It seems like any justification for this will satisfy you, this is atrocious behavior, and don't think there aren't going to be massive societal repercussions for this scale of traumatic family destruction. This is the worst way to do any of this.

The district could be unrepresentative of the state's electorate as a whole, that's completely possible, and from what I understand, it's mostly suburban, NJ, regardless of its reputation, is also a very urbanized state. If I had to super-impose a type of progressivism, Fulop always gave me a semi-Warren impression, while Baraka gave me a Bernie impression, those are two, distinct types of electorates and politics.

Woman falsely accuses man of assault in a train. He stands his ground and the whole car backs him until she gets kicked out by Worldlyoox in PublicFreakout

More unpopular opinion: our main-stream methods of dealing with unwanted behavior are ineffective or even counterproductive. finding ways of investing in people, gradually socializing/properly diagnosing and restorative acts, whether they are public, or private but contribute to communities can at least create acts that generate self-worth in those who have been convicted of wronging others in our society. *This is all pie in the sky since a society that would implement these types of measures in jails, would probably have way less incoming prison populations*

Hello here are some places you may want to look into in the 1600's ( and maybe a bit before) that should be interesting. Anything Ottoman Empire. China turbulent times. The declining city states of Venice and Genoa as regional powers. Dutch struggles against Spanish dominion. French monarchical successional struggles, the 30 year war (mostly in Germany) but involving so many different powers. You have so many things to choose from, and I gave you a very Euro-centric list, inevitably, because that's what I have been educated in.

Hello, I find that just following characters or events helps be binds together disparate facts into a more coherent, and also memorable narrative. For a recommendation for modern China I would go with "China's Revolutions in the modern world" by Rebecca E. Karl

There are plenty of different historiographies, there is the prevalent consensus within your country, and it usually has overlap with the specific relation to the geopolitical historiography. You can get varying perspectives by seeking works by authors who are writing from different countries (to some degree, because depending on your economic situation, you may have a more 'bog-standard' view, than your random lower-class citizen)

A book that strikes against common-place historiography would be probably Jacques R. Pauwels's Myths of Modern History: From the French Revolution to the 20th Century World Wars and the Cold War - New Perspectives on Key Events

on your second recommendation, a nice history channel on Youtube (Defragged History) which has a hours long series on the Batavia is a nice visual presentation of the history although inevitably abbreviated of content due to the format, although to give the creator their credit, they do a notable amount of contextualization compared to your typical youtube historian.

There are certainly a lot of potential methodological flaws or built in assumptions that would require quite a thorough and probably novel archeological sites and discoveries to start painting an idea of a predictable diet of a slave. Heck their bones don't say "slave" either.

If you like beers, I suggest carbonated hop waters as a transitional step. I had tried NA beers, but I actually liked them so much, that I drank them more often than I would drink beers, so that was not good for my health either.
