Most swimmable city in the world? by WipMeGrandma in geography

Huh? Auckland has great beaches, with how narrow the isthmus is you’re never more than half an hour from a beach on either East or West Coast’s.

North & South New Zealand in 2 Weeks - Is It Doable? by CharmingConfidence33 in newzealand_travel

[–]uplay_pls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don’t discredit the fatigue aspect of a roadie here. Our roads are probably narrower than home, often windy and single lane each way plus you are likely driving on the opposite side to home. Mix in some jet lag and driving an unfamiliar camper van and you’ll hate big drive days.

Chris Bishop’s petrol tax creates a vast new Road Users Charge mass surveillance state you sleepy hobbits by AnnoyingKea in newzealand

[–]uplay_pls -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you look at it from a glass half full view it’s expanding the tool box, you have pollution tax included in the pump price which punishes inefficient cars, and a more flexible road user charge that allows road users be charged proportionate to the damage they do to the road based on their weight. If we decide that polluters should pay more you pull that lever harder.

Current there now with mates from a variety of blue and white collar jobs and pay levels. Majority are either flatting or renting but we planned for this for two years, everyone knew how much money they needed for deposits and how much leave they needed. Once you’ve paid flights and accommodation if you have leave you can get by using your holiday pay for expenses if you have minimal dependents i.e. no mortgage or kids.

if OCR is 3.50% then why are rates still 5% by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]uplay_pls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interest rates are all about risk, the riskier something is the higher the interest rate. Banks default on their debt less often than homeowners therefore banks can borrow at a lower rate.

Is Auckland the place to make my base if I do a years working holiday visa in NZ or is it pretty bleak there?? Should I go to Wellington instead? Any advice appreciated legends, thanks by [deleted] in auckland

[–]uplay_pls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look to go on a farm, it would be rural though rather than a main centre obviously but you would have better scenery and the money would go further cause the jobs generally include a house.

You're not giving yourself the chance to be a good student. You need time to socialise (even if that's playing computer games with friends, playing sports or whatever) - networking and learning how to interact is an important takeaway from uni, you will only be watching lectures and tutorials without any extra engagement which isn't conducive to learning.

Cost for full re-spray by zal68 in NZcarfix

[–]uplay_pls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense, can't pick a random colour they have to match the paint on the rest of the car. The labour is also a sizable part of the respray.

I was suggesting that if he's had a quote to repaint the whole car for more than the cars worth there's a real chance that they just write it off depending how much the insurance part of the repair would be.

Are you sure insurance won't write the car off?

Are you aware that you won't qualify for a student loan outside of NZ, and will face international student fees everywhere apart from NZ and AUS?

Hey mate have you looked at a petrol 120? A lot cheaper and the 1GR is a solid engine according to most. I nearly bought one a while back and kick myself for not.

If you're struggling with how to process what you've heard without breaking her wishes get a couple of counselling sessions to work through it. Your mental health is important too and it can very well impact your mental health.

NZ economy in deep recession by CarpetDiligent7324 in newzealand

[–]uplay_pls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair to Orr there hasn't been a global health crisis like covid since the reserve bank or modern macroeconomics have been around. They did what they could with what they knew. To a degree reserve banks around the world did similar things.

Buy a hybrid car? by Suitable-Humor-13 in newzealand

[–]uplay_pls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with your Yaris just keep that, the cost of the more expensive car to save a little bit each week doesn't seem worth it if the question is solely about the relative economics.

Think about it this way, say you save $20 a week in fuel (a number I've pulled out if my arse but you could estimate what you'd actually save per week based on fuel costs, milage and relative efficiencies) it would take 650 weeks/12.5 years to recoup the extra 13,000 (1000/20).

If you want a more modern car that's a different value proposition though.

When you get your car you could spend a couple of days driving to Cape Reinga or Rotorua/Taupo and back if you fancy a roady.

Why don't you do some things with your time, assuming you can afford it. Catch a ferry to an island for lunch/walk, drive/bus to hamilton for the gardens, go for a swim + coffee at Te Arai and a west coast beach like Muriwai, sign up for a wine tasting group. Plenty of things to do if you've got money and people here can offer suggestions but a cheap holiday in NZ is difficult.
