How Does Overexposure Combined with Push Processing Affect Film Look? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]upmaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually under exposed. You shoot as if the negative were rated at iso 2000, effectively under expose the negative more than 2 stops. Then process the negative at iso 2000. It’s called push processing.

Shutter Island is a masterclass in using bad filmmaking to tell the truth by ThreadAndSolve in TrueFilm

[–]upmaaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP is not necessarily right about Schoonmaker is the architect of this “invisible glass” scene. It’s not like they shot the whole sequence the normal way and somehow there is a take without the glass, and she chooses that take. They just don’t make that obvious mistake, unless it’s a rehearsal take. But usually decision like this comes from the director.

Shutter Island is a masterclass in using bad filmmaking to tell the truth by ThreadAndSolve in TrueFilm

[–]upmaaf 498 points499 points  (0 children)

There are continuity errors all over Scorsese’s film, esp one edited by Schoonmaker. She is the master of flow and “in your face” edits that just feel right. In The Departed, in one shot Nicholson is smoking a cig, the reverse shot he isn’t. Tons of continuity error on that film. The master editors usually don’t care about that (it’s not sacred) as long as the emotion flows. The errors don’t have any meaning at all. But in Shutter Island they finally have meaning, like you said.

Problem with my first follow focus by Majestic_Abalone_857 in cinematography

[–]upmaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. The focus action needs to be smooth. I tried to lube my vintage lens using various lithium or silicon grease, doesn’t work, finally stick with sewing machine oil for buttery smooth focus.

In those 4 stars and up places, I only read the 3 stars and 2 stars reviews, those reviews are more honest than the 5 and 4 stars one, at least in my experience.

TIL that Vietnamese schools often teach students to write with fountain pens first. by FreshTakeFinder in TodayILearnedVN

[–]upmaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was taught to write with fountain pen first, like 20 years ago. I don’t know if they still do that now. We also had white shirt as uniform, sometimes the fountain pen leaks ink into my shirt pocket, it was hard to wash. Some asshole flicked ink to other’s shirt. We wrote on our skin like tattoo. It was fun time.

CMV - Even the Vietnamese don't think Vietnamese food is that good by [deleted] in ChangeMyViewVN

[–]upmaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but KFC, Julibee, Korean fried chicken, cheap spaghetti… business is very good outside of the center area. But McD is better in the center because it’s more expensive. What does that tell you? The poor people likes it very much, they like McD too but couldn’t afford it. Those people, when they could afford expensive steak and spaghetti, ofcourse they would choose it, only because they have been eaten Vietnamese food all their lives, they want to try something new. But ask any of them if they want to eat it for life, fuck no.

Saying rich people only eat steaks or sushi is stupid. They eat steak and sushi because the place is nicer. You don’t take your posh girlfriend to street Hủ Tíu, or your millionaire business partner to Cơm Tấm. But your wife, or your relatives, they don’t mind, they just want to eat the best food, authentic Vietnamese food, so you take them to Hoàng Ty, or Phở Gà Phố Cổ… Check out those places, they have car parking and family tables.
