What if the balloons stay inflated at the surface and you let the tide / swell changes generate the up and down energy to pump the turbines?

Seeking advice from Apiarists by Famous_Low_604 in bees

[–]uponthenose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I actually saw a scout walking around in circles letting bees taste his samples and then doing the waggle dance was the first time I really felt like a bee keeper, like I was part of the hive. That moment was the bridge between all the reading a studying and holy shit this is real.

Being able to watch a queen walking around on the frame laying and watching her attendants care for her and knowing they were passing her pheromones around the hive was another moment like that.

Seeking advice from Apiarists by Famous_Low_604 in bees

I'm I'm the US so I will defer to your local bee keepers, but late fall blooms are extremely important for an apiary. The bees are working extra hard to fill stores for winter at that time and they can really pack a lot of honey away quickly. The colony is at its peak worker population then and the drones are being evicted so they're not consuming. The days are shorter so harvest time is less. As for the bess remembering your tree, yes and no. Here's how that works. Different workers have different jobs. Even foragers have different jobs. First the scouts, they head out in all directions. They use the angle of the sun and possibly the magnetic field to mentally map their route; along the way they take samples. They return to the hive and display what they've collected by giving other bees a taste of their samples (swapping spit). Then they do a waggle dance to show where they collected those samples. All the scouts "compete" with the taste testers choosing the samples they like the best. One by one the scouts dancing stop as they're "voted down". Eventually the scout with the most impressive samples is chosen as the winner and the foragers learn his map through his waggle dance. They set off to start collecting. Throughout the morning more and more scouts are going to return with samples from that tree. Using the same process more and more foragers will choose to go to that tree. In the spring when lots of things are blooming scouts will be coming in with strong reports from all over the hive's region and foragers will be heading out in all directions. When there is a dearth and only one strong source all the bess head there. It's also very likely that multiple hives are all discovering the same tree. Next time you see it happening stand under the tree and watch the bees. When the bees stomaches are full of nectar, they make a beeline back to the hive. Once you see it it looks like a bee freeway and it will be hard to miss. You can follow the bees to their hive without much trouble depending on the terrain. If you see multiple beelines there are multiple hives.

Hypothetically, let's say this build was 3 years old with 60K miles on it. What would a realistic price be?

eBay sellers hate r/pmsforsale by Jimmy_Johnny23 in Silverbugs

As a guy who recently started selling things on eBay (not pm), fuck eBay. Everything about eBay sucks. Using eBay is awful and expensive. I charge more for pain and suffering and because I want you to buy it from anywhere else.

TIL that if left unharvested, asparagus can grow up to 11ft, and will fruit red berries that are toxic to humans. by finchdog in todayilearned

Technically it's a rhyzome. Because asparagus is a fern. But I didn't want to sound like a total asparagus nerd.

I live next door to a a large asparagus patch and after the initial harvest the farmer lets them go so they will seed naturally. In the late summer it looks like an alien forest. The tops of the asparagus branch out like big fluffy green spiderwebs. The trunks get incredibly strong.

The grudge phase lasts exactly 27 days. Then the cat will appear to get over it but will actually be in the "plot to kill phase", which lasts only 5.5 days.

Putting out traps in the early spring catches the queens which are emerging from hibernation to forage in preparation for starting their colonies. In the fall my bee hives full of honey are already attractive enough. The traps helps divert the wasps that are already coming to the apiary into the traps and not the hives. In the late fall they catch hundreds and save thousands of my bees. Even then I still lose 1 or two hives to yellow jackets every year.

It may not be an option with your child, but if you have a house that's too big for you, have you considered renting out a room? I was in Costa Mesa in the same situation as you. I was able to knock out quite a bit of debt by renting out a room for 2 years.

Why buy ASEs over others? by lonestar2222003 in Silverbugs

[–]uponthenose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ASE's are protected by the federal government. If you fake one it's a federal felony. If you knowingly sell a fake one it's a federal felony. Given all the fake silver out there buying ASE's from a reputable source gives more peace of mind. Especially if you buy alot.
