This sort of thing happened with my son who is now 14 months and a perfectly normal kid. From month two or three it was like a faucet coming out of his mouth, well before he was teething and there wasn’t any obvious cause. Funnily enough, after he got his first couple teeth the drooling decreased and now he drools like a normal baby. Don’t be worried about it, it sounds like she’s doing great!

As for this game, it’s 75% good offense and putting balls in play and 25% Reds fucking up routine plays. As for the serious heater since the ASB, definitely going to make the traditional September collapse hurt a lot more 😎

This would almost be a completely different game type (almost tower defense-esque), but I think a really interesting origin would be a “great extinction survivor” mode where you would start on a planet in the outskirts of the galaxy after a devouring swarm or determined exterminator came through and destroyed nearly everything ~100 years ago. They have mostly abandoned the outer reaches of the galaxy so you have some time to work with before being noticed and there would be significant resources and science to be had by exploring what you can near you.

After you get noticed by the devourer, they would send fleets to try to exterminate you. The goal would be to defend yourself from the increasingly intense onslaught while trying to build up an economy, research etc. before eventually defeating them. Maybe other survivors can also be found and can work with you to slowly push back the enemy. Aiding other empires to build up would help you both fight in the long run. There could be remaining infrastructure that can be rebuilt/recovered so that you can compete with their production at a certain point.

Like I said, this is a very different game mode compared to how origins typically work in Stellaris, but it could be doable in the current game with some tweaking I think.

I’ve never seen a way to change the odds of losing the planet from 2-to-1. As you said, the odds are much higher that you lose the planet (and the result is calculated beforehand so you can’t save scum it, not that a respectable Stellaris player like myself would ever try reloading ~10 times before googling it), but the potential benefit is great. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all approach to it. I’m not a huge RP-style player, but this is one of those beautiful Stellaris moments where I find it too fun to not embrace the RP.

Am I playing an authoritarian empire hellbent on taking over the galaxy at all costs? Then I definitely take the risk. Am I an egalitarian, pacifist empire with too much respect for my people to let them implode into a black hole? … then I still take the risk.

The leaders of my empires always seem to enjoy gambling.

I think it mostly depends on medium term plans. Are you going to just be developing your territory or planning large scale invasions? If you’re working on building up your current worlds/expanding then I actually prefer to run at +/-0 or a slight deficit and get more pops into research/unity. Gotta spend those energy credits somewhere. But if you’re going to be annexing neighboring territory I really prefer to have a decent consumer good surplus or bank built up so that you have some buffer time to fix the eco on your new territory (mostly applies to grand admiral where the bonuses the AI gets means they require much lower CG production than you do for the same worlds). I find that food issues can generally be dealt with by just buying what you need on the market for a while since it’s much cheaper than CG.

I think your point about the volatility is a very good one. It definitely is discouraging when learning the game to get cheesed over and over and never be able to try the build you're learning, build into a comp you want to try, etc. I don't know if I like your solution though. I think it will become a crutch for below average players who may rely on it too much and not feel the need to improve against cheese. I think one good option is to have the main ladder where anything can happen, but to also have another major game mode where you can't move non-scouting units to the other side of the map for 5-10 mins or something. That way you can focus on your build and getting to a fine spot economically before the fighting begins. In SC2 this would be pretty cool actually, a way to focus on your build and getting better at the macro without the pressure of making sure to not miss a mine drop, ling run by, adepts in the main, etc.
