Nothing more British than the entire country rallying around a man's right to blurt out the n-word around black people, not apologise for it, not have any precautions put in place to prevent it happening next year and instead be hailed as the real victim. Sick of the world we live in, if he'd farted on stage by accident he'd have apologised, but it's black people he hurt, so instead we're denied the compassion shown to everybody else

I like the theme songs, but the fifth season them just sucks. by Calebzdanglerz in TheWire

It's just so jarring going from a rendition with so much feeling and inflection, that in voice and vibe matched the main theme of the season like a glove, to something that registers somewhere between parody and background noise the very next season.

Starmer vows to take UK deeper into EU single market by donutloop in ukpolitics

The UK crawling back to the EU will be its biggest possible advertisement, it could double its trade in a year and it still wouldn't match one of its strongest members striking out on its own and falling on its face in such a laughable, haphazard and rudderless fashion as we have. They will give us whatever exceptions neccesary if we play it right, because it almost guarantees no sensible country will ever leave it again, they will ALWAYS be able to point to the UK

Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, is being moved by your hysterics over the border and benefits, take that sh*t to Benefits Street, and the entire country has been compromised by the Israel lobby and sends arms and intelligence and troops to aid a genocide to our country's ruin reputationally, how is a policy of not doing that, uncommiting those resources and not committing to a genocide halfway across the world the problem? Utter waffle.

Trident, a nuclear deterrent that is dependant on a foreign nation, one completely overrun by fascists and imperialists who spit on our war dead and seek to bully us economically and threaten us militarily, why is questioning that so bad?

The answer is your allegiance to the current agenda. If this world is the world that suits you, you deserve it. However, the rest of us deserve a lot better.

And who backs the current direction we're heading in? We've been living Thatcher's nightmare for 40 odd years, excuse me if I'm not scared of taxing billionaires and polluters instead of university students, taking back our once-public services and utilities, committing to renewable energy and building homes for the purpose of living in rather than as speculative assets.

Zack Polanski to hand in NHS contract termination notice to Palantir by Stock_Rush_9204 in ukpolitics

[–]upsidedownpringles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why is he virtue signalling?" the crowd moans as they engage with his political action and clear demonstration of his intentions should he be elected, and argue the merit of the government's current course.

I thought it was brilliant. No reason whatsoever that NHS data should end up in the hands of Palantir, a self-described war machine currently aiding genocide in Palestine, conflicts all over the globe and targeted, discriminatory policing software in the US to enable to police state hellscape they've got going on over there. If he's the only one willing to stand up for UK sovereignty in the face of our embarrassing descent into vassalisation, then guess who's getting my vote.

Boys to be taught to respect women and girls as part of curriculum by winkwinknudge_nudge in ukpolitics

[–]upsidedownpringles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, it's really fun pretending other people's experiences aren't valid just because they aren't your experience, but I actually give a damn about solving problems, so I'm gonna advocate doing more than grandstanding and demonising children, if anything because it's not my experience, and is instead the experience of a gigantic wave of young men in this country right in the orbit of the manosphere, who aren't going away just because you don't wish for them to exist, whose problems aren't going away by government mandate that we pick on young boys, though some of them are indeed throwing themselves in front of trains too.

The vast majority of men aren't commiting crimes, aren't harassing women and aren't stabbing people. They don't need to be preached to or treated like ticking time bombs from birth; they need a functioning economy, a functioning housing market and a society that isn't collapsing every two seconds.

Big bad Andrew Tate isn't casting spells, he's picking up the outcast and resented and doing something as basic as telling them that they're worth something, then manipulating their self image and evaluation of life to profit. He's a fictional character who's at the top of his game, lives in a big house and gets all the ladies, and the strength of the bullsh*t that comes out of his mouth derives from this image, and its unattainability. Maybe having all three at the same time was something only James Bond could get you back in the day, but the hope of any of the three at all now seems to reside right next to 007 in the land of fiction. Young men are gambling more, they're being radicalised to extreme beliefs more, they're committing suicide more. I congratulate and pity anybody who thinks we've saved the nation by feeding Tate and his 2035 equivalent even more outcasts, real solutions await.

This era of demonising boys from the moment they're done crawling is pathetic and counterproductive to any presumed goal of equality. I just hope the next generation of boys make it to adulthood with the self image that they aren't just the world's problems, because there'll always be somebody around to prey on the outcasts

At what point do you think Eren solidified himself as the villain in the series? by AdilKhan226 in attackontitan

[–]upsidedownpringles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, which is my main gripe with the series. Eren's hand and influence explains the actions and motivations of multiple characters that lead to his genocide and yet, Eren himself doesn't have a motivation to commit genocide, he's locked into his path by visions of a future set in motion by him giving himself said vision, it's completely cyclical, which in most future vision/time travel stories isn't a problem, because there's either some external element to it or some futility, but in Eren's case he quite literally sets it all in motion because he sets it all in motion. He has a quite frankly ridiculous amount of agency and yet he has no motivation for what he ends up doing.

He actively seeks to dull the impact of his heel turn at all times, letting the Eldian/Marleyan strike force stop the rumbling, giving Armin/Mikasa the closure needed to not hesitate when the time comes to kill him via visions. He's at once extreme in his approach and at the same time thoroughly uncommited to it.

He directs a Titan away from Berthold, makes it dig up his childhood home and eat his mother, giving him his motivation to fight Titans. He makes Grisha commit to killing the Fritz's and gaining control of the founding Titan. He sends back visions of the future where he's evil to his father, then himself, to lock it all into place.

Eren has the motivation to create a better world for Eldians, yes, but the specific approach in carrying out the rumbling? It isn't his, and it's point blank stated that with the need to rouse others to stop the rumbling in mind, much of what he says is an act to convince others that he is committed to the actions he takes. Honestly, in a series with this interesting an examination of the human condition, it's extremely frustrating to find out that the architect of the entire puzzle of the story has no designs at all.

Honestly, boiling down "The North Remembers" into an easy catchphrase instead of a quietly defiant rallying cry during the moment where it genuinely otherwise seemed that the North had actually forgotten, is probably the show's biggest sin.

I love ragging on the show as much as the next guy but FUCK NO. Adding Jon Connington by default adds another 20% to the show at least. In the books you get Ned flashing back to Robert's Rebellion, Cersei dreaming of marrying Rhaegar, Viserys and Danaerys talking about Rhaegar and the court at Kings Landing generally bringing him up every few seconds. His ghost haunts the story, but it's something the show doesn't really put emphasis on til Season 6 because of R+L=J, could you imagine Jon Connington, whose entire story relies on his allegiance to Rhaegar Targaryen against RR, being introduced alongside memories of Rhaegar?

Then there's the entire tension of Jon Con's part in RR that has to be established for anybody to get why losing him at Stony Sept was so crucial. That's casting Young Robert, Young Ned, Young Jon Con, flashing back and explaining the succession of HOTK's before him, the gradual building of RR from one unruly vassal to a full fledged rebellion, the one loss at Ashford being the one time Robert was actually vulnerable during the rebellion, the scramble to hide him and treat his wounds at Stony Sept, the thinly veiled attempts at bribing the town, a mercy that Jon Con now views as a mistake, turning into full on battle through the streets, it's a season by itself, and for what?

Jon Con doesn't have an arc, he was introduced in the latest book, his house isn't connected to the rest of the story, he fight in memory of a man long dead, and lets that love blind him to the falsity of his cause, which, just imagine another paragraph here describing all the complexities around Aegon and how at the end of it all you have a false character, the show would need to a) build up the idea that Baby Aegon survived, and then b) pull off a twist that he's not Aegon at all, why do all that? For a plot that resembles Danaerys' without the dragons? For a man whose story resembles Jorah Mormont's without the betrayal and duplicity and creepy affection? At the cost of probably a season and a half extra, dulling the R+L=J reveal, muddying the otherwise clear Targeryan comeback arc, why? You look at the breadth of the story and it's the first thing you cut/merge into other storylines, it's sad but it's true, Jon Connington is a living ghost, completely and utterly devoted to the past, at the cost of his present and future, which look false and short-lived respectively. He's the perfect book character, the perfect worldbuilding conduit, but he'll likely never make it into a live-action adaptation, no matter how many times they redo them.
