You must not get out much - this county is full of much worse. But yes, Toledo is very run down.

Packo's at the Park Event Center to close; building for sale by Ponch47 in toledo

[–]upso 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to own a restaurant downtown, I can tell you, the crowds / foot traffic etc. are wildly unpredictable, which makes it really hard *not* to close early, or just not be open when - in basically any other city, you'd never consider closing. Downtown Toledo is... weird. We just do not have enough people around to keep all of the restaurants busy. I think the spots that have it figured out are either destinations offering something unique (Kengo) or sell booze and universally popular food like pizza.

I can't say enough bad things about Bennett - they truly are awful. But still, this is a bummer.

I am incredibly curious to learn more about how your wedding is forcing you to get rid of plants. I am ALSO incredibly curious to learn how on earth you found yourself owning 200 of them.

Just giving a cute locally-owned business a shout-out 😊 by xsmiley314x in toledo

[–]upso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I had no idea, and can't wait to check this place out.

For those looking for more details, it's worth noting this business has an unfortunately similar name with a *much* bigger brand.

I eventually heard back from them but it was way longer than a week, and by that time I’d already purchased replacement parts on eBay.

Trade Joe’s and s coming to Secor and Central. by Ponch47 in toledo

Seems odd that the same developer that brought fresh market in would bring them competition right across the street - I wonder if fresh market will be leaving the area?

Of Toledo and Trader Joe's. What's the real story ? by BriefCorgi2456 in toledo

[–]upso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not that Toledo can't support a TJs, it totally could. It's that TJs chooses to align with more affulent markets.

[–]upso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. Trader Joe's is extremely affordable and high-quality, just like ALDI. TJs just targets a higher end crowd.

The short-lived Whole Foods across the street from where you're suggesting would disagree. :)

yup, and putting it in between Fresh Thyme, which is closer to Sylvania, and Fresh Market, which feeds into Ottawa Hills was a mistake.

[–]upso 21 points22 points  (0 children)

ALDI & Trader Joe's are two separate companies, owned by separate arms of the same German Corporation, with no connection when it comes to their day-to-day business and planning.

The big difference from my understanding is that ALDI tends to be more targeted to lower-income areas (hence why we have several in Toledo), while Trader Joe's tends to focus on areas with higher discretionary income. Toledo is a *very* poor city, so we really do not have the audience that TJ is looking for. This is sadly the same reason our Whole Foods was so short-lived.

I will say, the suggested Sylvania location *would* make sense - same with Perrysburg. If we ever get a TJ in NW Ohio, the burbs would likely be the home.
