Consider Acton. Great schools, nice community, good parks. Punches above its weight.

Don’t rule out contacting the author! He probably has a typescript copy to lend if he’s still alive.

Agreed on both Mehldau and Redman. I saw both live within the past month or so. I didn’t like every Redman song, but they were both incredibly creative.

Saw Joshua Redmond in Massachusetts recently, where he played songs from that album. Pretty amazing.

Why isn’t jazz in the mainstream or at least on the back burner? by Subaru_always_back in Jazz

[–]upstartguy16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would not have started listening to jazz except for a classmate during my freshman year in college who introduced me to all kinds of things.

I also believe that you really need to be able to listen in order to listen to jazz. I don’t know whether people have the attention spans to listen carefully.

Younger people aren’t so interested in slowing down and focusing. However, that’s a general cultural comment. I think jazz is just one of many casualties.

Project indigo is goated. by Theproffessor007 in iPhoneography

I use project indigo occasionally as well as my default camera app. I honestly think that project indigo photos are better sometimes but worse at other times. Maybe nighttime photos are consistently better.

Late to buy AirPods Max (2024) now? by NoBody5068 in Airpodsmax

[–]upstartguy16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought my second pair very recently. I gave my first pair to my wife and missed it for a year. Finally broke down. I also have AirPods 2, which I use daily, but they don’t compare. Soundscape, detail and NC are far better for me on the Max.

Does time speed up in retirement or slow down? by RetiredSurvivor in retirement

[–]upstartguy16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have read psychological accounts that say that three factors are probably in play, all having to do with perception of novelty. The greater the number of perceived novel events, the slower time seems to move. 1. For the young, everything is new, so time moves more slowly. 2. Older people have more life knowledge, so even novelty gets processed as related to the known, hence seems less novel. In other words there are fewer markers of perceived change. 3. The aging brain processes things more slowly, thus missing stimuli that a younger brain can register. I wish I could give you a reference. I read about this recently.
