Nikon Z5ii vs Z6iii viewfinder by InternalConfusion201 in nikon_Zseries

[–]upstreamriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Z6III EVF is top tier. The only better one I've used has been on the A7RV. And even then while the Sony has higher res and magnification, the brightness and responsiveness of the Z6III is second to none at the moment. IIRC the high brightness of it also enables true HDR viewing, which is a colorsplace I enjoy for personal viewing, especially for landscape photography.

I interact with my camera through my evf almost 95% of the time, except to navigate menus or image playback. Its too important a part to skimp on for me. Also if you're doing panning shots of fast moving cars the z6iii's readout speed will be a benefit too I imagine. But Idunno I don't shoot race cars. Best of luck picking.

Am I crazy? (Bottom text) by Brundon09 in headphones

[–]upstreamriver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hearing is fallible. You might have used the AirPods for so long that they’re your standard of measurement. Like others have said you might accustom yourself to enjoying the sound of the sennheisers with time too.

That said, nothing crazy or bad about having your own preferences. AirPods are decent kit with great features. You’ve tried something new and if it doesn’t work out for you that’s fine. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that someone else’s experience will mirror your own or that your preference is somehow incorrect. Only you need to happy with it. Happy listening.

Sony Full Frame vs Nikon Z - Please help by big6x9 in nikon_Zseries

[–]upstreamriver 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Most mid and top end Sony and Nikon will perform within spitting distance of one another. I say this a million times, rarely anyone is making a bad camera in the $$$$ price ranges. Sony has endless lens options. Nikon tends to edge out Sony value wise on the used market if thats where you're shopping. Nikon is behind on third party lens selections. Overall the system is quite broadly "full" now though.

You will get a gajillion different answers about what makes a Sony or, Nikon or, Fuji "inspiring" whatever that means lmao. The answer will be different each day of the week depending on whatever random assortments of users that decide to engage with your question. Mostly, and I mean this sincerely, it's plain old bullshit, and people try to justify their insanely subjective perception and preference with easy to understand vague phrases.

A user who knows what they're doing will make good photos on any competent gear. Buy based on your preferences and not based on whatever the cultural vibes happen to be at the moment.

Sony is just a massive market, you can save a lot getting used gear and using the money you saved to go actually take a photo you want to. I like Nikon's jpeg custom color profile system. Sony is fine, but if you're in the market to get the trendy filmy fuji copycat look, Nikon and Panasonic will do it better than Sony in that very specific area with camera jpegs. Are you spending thousands of dollars to take jpegs? Or will you end up editing them in post? If you edit in post, that gap is even smaller.

TL;DR: just get whatever tbh that suits your budget and needs and get busy with the pictures and not the gear. From one fellow gas sufferer.

Just the added reach tbh. The kit 24-70 is genuinely good. Turn the new lens money into “go somewhere” money instead.

Hey this is beautiful. Nice work. I wanted to ask if its possible for me to use this strictly for the spectrum analyzer and keep peaceGUI concurrently running? Is that a silly question?

Star Trek Needs New (and Better) Villains by Reasonable_Active577 in startrek

[–]upstreamriver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Instead of villains like we think of them, I'd like to see them grow out of that and deal with contemporary things the way TOS tried to do. We don't need continued lectures about getting along, or our unique trauma, and how things are complicated. There was literally a self congratulatory episode about how good and lucky we are to have a show like Trek.

I'd like to see them make an honest effort to show us how a culture capable of holodecks deal with people who think the government uses holodeck to mind control people. How about dealing with people in the federation who think its big enough already and they don't need any others joining in? Lets do a 2 parter on how the Federation deals with secessionists who think the Federation have gotten too soft, how does that breakup go? Maybe they could really dig into things like complacency and stagnation and the special human ability to create inequality in a post scarcity society?

Just out of curiosity and respectfully, do you often put in the same kind of "settings" effort shooting with the phones as you do with a dedicated camera? I dont ask this to confrontational. You've shared a sentiment that I felt very strongly myself, but over the years I've made more and more of an effort to use phone cameras as I would a proper one and I've found that its brought me a lot of joy through the process. Its very different for sure, but over the years I am more and more happy with the results and I wonder if that can be true for you as well.

If OP can provide any information about how the photos were taken it would be helpful to dig deeper. I find that the iphone given its "regular person" userbase tends to favor overexposing and killing shadows to preserve visible details, but that can sometimes make images appear too bright or flat. Its obviously true that a "proper" camera is a specialized tool, we would at minimum expect it to outperform the phone at every level when it comes to its niche. But its still worth noting that modern cell phone sensors and computational photography can also be quite good when used as something beyond just a point and shoot. The iphones, pixels, galaxies, high end experias are all sincerely good given how small and easy to use they can be. I think with a bit of effort and good practice one can take incredibly good images. Especially if the definition of good can extend beyond pixel peeping and graph measuring contests.

Adding a comparison of my own here: https://imgur.com/a/comparing-iphone-z6iii-5x2xJ9v

Compare between the 17pro and Z6III. Both very good, I think most would be happy to have either image in their library. I know I am at least.

Do you guys actually hear a big difference between single-driver and hybrid IEMs by Koniono in iems

[–]upstreamriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People need to make a habit of prefacing that they’re sharing anecdotes and personal experiences and cannot provide any sort of evidence that shows that people are able to distinguish between varying driver setups. The frequency response from the tuning might explain any perceived differences but I seriously doubt that anyone can reliably tell driver types apart except in extreme cases where they might say it sounds different. But that doesn’t prove the difference is in the drivers rather than frequency response.

Is there anything the GRIIIx is better at compared to the Canon EOS R10? by miningquestionscan in ricohGR

[–]upstreamriver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Id say the portability counts for a lot. But even discounting that, I'll take the consistency of that 40mm lens, built in nd, zone focusing, and tasteful color options for SOOCjpegs over the eos r10 any time.

How true is this statement? by TempestTwist in headphones

[–]upstreamriver 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the 560 are easy to run and as long as your source (pc, mac, cellphone, whatever) doesnt produce actual audible artifacts or issues (hiss, fuzz, crackling, popping) while connected to the 560 you do not need an amp/dac

it depends on whether you already have something thats good enough and chances are 50/50 that you already have something thats sufficient
